Results from the handicap in May are in the results section of this V S Update.

Track & Field

There have been 3 meetings of the West Yorkshire League so far (4 to go) and 3 of the York Summer League so far (2 or 3 to go).  20 VS juniors have taken part in at least one of these with an average of 8 at each meeting.  To find the remaining meetings, click on “Events” on the website and put “Track & Field” (without the quotes) in the Search box.  Then change View As to List.  Neat!  I’ll include the results in the next edition.

Peco Trophies and Mementos (from Richard Irvine)

The final batch of unclaimed PECO mementos and prizes are in the cupboard at Leo’s, including a trophy for Malcolm Coles (M75) 1st; and buffs for the following people who ran all 5 PECO events… Malcolm Coles; Gary Mann; Sarah Mann; Jon Pownall; Chris Sawyer.

Leo’s Club Meeting Update (from Steph Gledhill)

They are still planning on improving the road, they’ve talked to the council who have said it’s a private road and its illegal for non-members to use (visitors are fine to use it). This should hopefully mean when they fix the road they can reduce the number of people driving down it. They are awaiting a quote and hopefully it will be sorted by the end of the summer.

Alleycats are exiting their lease early. They were not making money as they weren’t investing the time. Two individuals approached to take over the club house, these have been interviewed. Paul Gabriel (first team coach) and his wife, Emma will take over the running of the club house in July subject to further conversations. This will make it much easier to book food, the Christmas party etc and will hopefully be much better than it has been (I will miss the food though!)

RESULTS

We have lots of results and several race reports to catch up with but let’s start with

Yorkshire Champion!

Congratulations to Tally Diamond who won the 3000m event for Under-15 girls at the Yorkshire Track and Field Championships in a time of 11:46.

Meanwood Trail Junior Races

There were 145 finishers of whom 67 were V S junior members (listed below) and a further 18 are on the waiting list to join.

Full results at https://racebest.com/results/q34rs

Trophies were awarded to the first in each age category and V S juniors received 3 of these.  Skyrac athletes also won 3 and the other winners were from Abbey Runners and Otley.  V S juniors took 5 second places and 4 third places.  Medals were given to all finishers.

Many many thanks to 67 club members who had duties on the night and several more who came and supported.  This number doesn’t include many parents who were looking after their children and so unable to marshal.  A particular thank you to those active V S adult runners who gave up their Tuesday training session to come and help.  Special thanks to Andy Wicks and Paul Furness who spent the early afternoon setting up the course which included 120+ stakes and 500+ metres of red and white tape; their tasks also included flattening molehills and filling in rabbit holes.

The winning team was Wharfedale Harriers in 6:00:23, this team included Ali Burns. 100 teams ran, and other than the 3 teams who had 5 hour penalties for having a runner DNF, the slowest team was 11:33:12

Gisborough Moors Fell Race, 14th April (from Graham Jones)

The website photos of the Gisborough Moors race looked great. It looked like guaranteed shorts weather, and lots of nice runnable trail, but generously classed as a BL fell race. Estimates varied from 2200ft to 2700ft of climb in the 12-point-something miles.

Slightly wary of the 2700 figure, we started near the back of the field and were pleased to pick our way through, until the out-and-back section to Roseberry Topping started to take its toll. Unfortunately, it was then that a misplaced flag sent a group of us awry, onto a steep woodland path. By the time we found our way back on route, we recognised folk we had passed much earlier.

It is a really nice course though, and we were happy just to complete, gaining Valley Striders an honourable mention in the official race report. My Garmin reports a modest 2000ft of climb. Why does this always seem to happen, with fell races?

NB – the town of Guisborough has a “u”, but the eponymous moor does not.

Dick Hudson’s, 26th April (from Graham Jones)

The first event in the VS Thursday Run Summer Tour was a theoretically straightforward run over Ilkley Moor, to the Dick Hudsons pub and back. The fell race has an apostrophe, but the hostelry does not – perhaps suggesting there was more than one Dick … in which case, the apostrophe should be in a different place, but I digress.

This week’s navigational error was slightly more consequential, a missed path junction resulting in several runners reaching the turn after nearly 5 miles instead of 3.5. This included half of the VS contingent, who discovered they were almost last, and were sorely tempted to remove their numbers, keep on running into the pub and mingle with the crowd.

Sean Cook was first Strider to complete the actual course. There were also excellent runs from Dinesh “Never Again” Kaulgud, on his first ever VS Thursday Run, and from the mercurial John Hussey, who finished in the top half of his age category.

1 Adam Stirk (Wharfedale Harriers) 0:48:45

59 John Hussey (1st MV70) 1:06:45

Malhamdale Trail Half Marathon, 11th May (from Graham Jones)

This is a new event, which looks for all the world like a baby brother for the long-established Wharfedale version. Not so much of the “baby” though, with 1650ft of up and down making it more than a match. The route is glorious, with the highlight being the view towards the tarn, on the descent from Pikedaw. It certainly beats Stonegate Lane and the ring road. There is much good running, but also a ‘sting in the tail’, with an awkward descent to Gordale Bridge, after 10 miles.

This write-up also features a stray flag and route-finding error, narrowly averted by Samantha, who appeared from behind a wall, shouting and waving her arms. None of this was of concern to the only other VS competitor, Paul Smith, who had already disappeared over the horizon, having opened up a 1-minute gap early on, and maintained this for the duration. Apart from this minor faux pas, he was the perfect running companion.

There were no fell-running brownie points on offer, despite there being more “genuine fell terrain” than Wharfedale (and don’t get me started on the Ilkley Incline…) There were no brownies either, but there was pie and peas, and a large quantity of cake.

Cookridge Community Run 10k (from Bob Jackson)

This was the first time the event had been held and it had a sell-out 350 entries of whom 310 turned up and finished.

The race started at the top end of Cookridge near Old Mods, and the route took us on the Leeds Country Way to Golden Acre Park, round a lap of Golden Acre and then retraced back to Cookridge.

There was also a 2k fun run in which ex VS marathon runner Keith Cluderay (PB 2:25 when winning Leeds marathon) and his wife walked and crossed the line first, benefitting from the leading fun-runners not being turned round at the half-way point (because they were mixed in with the 10k).

The event was in memory of Gareth Dunn who had been diagnosed with cancer in 2015, had to have a leg amputated, was then selected for the GB Paralympic team but the cancer returned and he died in October last year. In his last year he had raised over £120k for cancer research.

Liverpool Rock’n’Roll marathon and half (from Steve Dixon)

Huge congratulations to Sue Sunderland on winning her age category in the Liverpool Rock n Roll Half Marathon today. Too many to count how many there were in her age category but she well and truly smashed it in 1 hours 41 minutes in challenging weather conditions. Well done too to Sally Merchant-Edge coming round in 2hours 21mins.

I did the full tour and got exactly what I wanted – a pretty certain London GFA qualifying time of 3 hours 50 minutes. Truly surprised though to come 2nd in my age category.

My apologies for any inaccurate times and if I’ve not spotted other Striders but my WiFi at the Campsite is very weak!  Great marathon in a great City
