Juniors track and field training and competition April 2022

amended 30/03/2022

We do have “Athletics Club” (not just “Running Club”) in our club name. In the summer all our junior members are able to train in track & field athletics and those school year 4 and higher may compete in track & field competitions if they want. Last summer 20 V S juniors competed in at least one athletics meeting.

Booking for April

The clocks have gone forward and we now have daylight for all our training sessions. We will be having our first training sessions of the year at GSAL on 5 & 12 April followed by sessions at Leos on 19 & 26 April.

GSAL timeslots for 5 & 12 April will be 5:30 and 6:30, Leos will continue to be 4:45, 5:30, 6:15.
We will be able to run 5 groups at both GSAL and Leos at 5:30 but even these may be oversubscribed – please select a different time if you can.

Please go to https://www.valleystriders.org.uk/booking-junior-training-sessions/ to find links to the booking form.

Please book by Thursday 31 March 9pm to ensure a place on 5 April. This is an earlier cut off than normal because (a) I need to condense the 3 timeslots at Leos to 2 at GSAL and (b) Surveymonkey has placed a restriction on the number of replies it will accept from 1 April onwards – we will probably use a different App for the May survey.

Training at Beckett Park on 1 April

Richard and I are planning track & field taster session on the athletics track at Beckett Park at 6:30pm on Friday 1 April.

We will show everyone the track finish location and then the start location for each of the track events and also demo the start procedures e.g. what happens at “On Your Marks”, “Set” (which is only for 400m or less) and the Start Gun (and what happens for false starts). We also plan to go through the process for the long jump and shot putting. And let everyone have a go at each event.

This session will only for those considering taking part in competitions this summer and therefore will only be for school years 4 and above as there are no competitions for younger runners.

The session will cost £3.50 per junior member.

There will be a post on Facebook very soon.

Training at GSAL

We plan to train on the athletics track and field at GSAL 12 times this summer. I’ve updated the information on the website; see https://www.valleystriders.org.uk/juniors-training-at-gsal-2022/

Specific information for the 5 April session will be in the “Names for 5 April” page which will be on the website this weekend.

Note that GSAL timeslots will be 5:30 and 6:30 in April but in May these will be 6:00 and 7:00 (but we don’t need to worry about that now).
