West Highland Way Challenge Race (from Steve Dixon)
Saturday 27 May 2017 - 95 Miles and 14,760ft of ascent
I signed up for this race early in the year mainly because I saw it as a cheap 'convenient' way to get 6 qualifying points for the Ultra Tour of Mont Blanc ballot without the bother of going abroad. I didn't really think I would enjoy it that much. Long stretches of Land Rover tracks running parallel to the busy A82 heading north towards the 'proper' highlands beyond Fort William. The interminable running for hours on end along the shores of Loch Lomond. It was all of that but I was wrong, I did enjoy it. The trails along the shoreline of Loch Lomond at dawn were sublime and my attention was drawn upwards to the mountain tops rather than the trunk road below. What made it especially enjoyable though was the small scale, friendly nature of the event that, even so, managed to provide excellent support from the start to the finish and back via coach to the start. This relatively new event was set up as an alternative to the well-established West Highland Way Race held later in the year with a much bigger field. The new race suited me perfectly as there was no requirement to provide a motorised support team of two people to meet me at each checkpoint as is the case with the latter. A big plus in not having a large field of up to 250 runners each with their own support team is how little impact we had on the peace and tranquillity of the highlands. I was not running that well but I thoroughly enjoyed immersing myself into the landscape through dawn to dusk and through to dawn again. Most of the time it was idyllic and non-threatening but a low did come in the early morning hours of my second night out. I'd climbed the Devil's Staircase out of Glencoe having started hallucinating (quite common in longer ultras due to sleep deprivation) and now facing the most technically difficult section of the West Highland Way, the descent into Kinlochleven. The clouds then dropped enveloping the hillside and the rain was at its heaviest. This made the head torch almost useless in identifying the path, never mind following the path! It was a slow laborious process constantly checking my GPS position to make sure I wasn't going round in circles. At times I was actually forgetting where I was and where I was trying to get to! It was quite a weird feeling falling asleep on my feet and waking with a 'start' as I started to fall to the ground. I'd left the Kingshouse Hotel in Glencoe shortly before 10.30pm and it was 3.40am when I finally reached the checkpoint at Kinlochleven just 9 miles further. It was somehow quite soothing and reassuring to find the race director, Jim Drummond, gently slumbering in his sleeping bag at the back of the Checkpoint. He'd been working tirelessly it seems throughout the event seeing him pop up at many of the previous checkpoints. It was nice to think that the next time I'll see him will be on the Claggan Football Ground in Fort William, just 14 miles away, presenting me with my crystal goblet that all finishers are awarded.
I was not particularly happy with my time of 34hrs 28mins and my position at the back of the field. This had a lot to do with my inexperience allowing an over enthusiastic start in the first quarter that saw me running in the front of the field with runners who ultimately finished with sub 24hr times. I think it may have been a combination of tiredness from that early effort and the absence of sleep but as I struggled to keep in touch with that small pack of runners I tripped over tree roots, face planting and smashing my left knee against rocks. Thankfully it was not a race ending injury but it certainly blew the wind out of my sails and I was ultimately relieved not to have been timed out.
I'm sure plenty of other Striders have finished this event in the past but I am aware that at least one has - our own fell running legend, Sylvia Watson, ran back in 1988 in a spectacular time of 21hrs 40mins 45secs. Support crews and food and drink laden tables at various checkpoints would have been unheard of, as would well signposted tracks. I'm informed by Sarah Smith that Sylvia cycled the route prior to the race to stash tins of rice pudding to sustain her in the race. Since hearing this story I've tried this nutritional strategy with a modern twist - plastic pots rather than the tins and having them transported in drop bags by the race organisers wherever possible. It's quite often the only solid food I'm able to swallow in the latter parts of races.
Maybe it was a rusty tin of rice pudding I tripped over?

RACE REPORTS - Stop Press
From Steve Dixon re West Highland Way
I hate the truth to get in the way of a good story but I'm now reliably informed Sylvia did no such stashing of tins of rice pudding but cleverly checked out the shops along the West Highland Way prior to the race for their stocks of tins of ambrosia and their willingness to open them for her during her race.
