Marshals and runners needed urgently

The club summer trail handicap is next Tuesday (12th), but we need 7 marshals for the event to take place.  Here's the route with marshal positions marked http://valleystriders.org.uk/hcaptrl.jpg .  Please email [email protected] if you can help.   (NB if we don't have sufficient marshals, we'll revert to the usual 5 mile route).

We also need runners for the Leeds Country Way Relay on Sunday 4 September.  We now have 52 names which is a nice number for 4 teams as it gives 4 reserves.  However in previous years we've had as many as 6 teams so I'm not sure why numbers are so low this year.  Each leg is approximately 10 miles, run in pairs, and we'll try to get good matches.  If you're in the 5th team, there will be no pressure, all we expect is for you to recce the route beforehand and run round (at any speed, maybe walking up steep hills) on race day.  Discover fields and footpaths that you never knew existed! Please email [email protected] if you're available to run.  Names can be checked at www.valleystriders.org.uk/vsteams.htm  More info http://www.kippaxharriers.org.uk/lcwv2.htm.  Final deadline definitely 11 July 11pm

Tuesday 12 July - V S junior mile and club summer handicap

All races start by Eccup Reservoir, juniors from 6:10pm and seniors from 6:55pm.

The start is by the lodge by the reservoir - postcode LS17 7RW.  This is on Goodrick Lane but this is only a footpath.  The nearest place to park is on Alwoodley Lane.  Goodrick Lane is opposite where Mount Drive meets Alwoodley Lane.

There will be two 1 mile (junior) races, one for school years 1 to 5, the other for school years 6 and above.  In the first race, adults may accompany their children but will not be included in the results.  Adults will be allowed to race in the second race providing the numbers are safe.

The junior races are open to all V S junior members, and they may each bring up to 2 guests.  These races are also open to all juniors on the waiting list.

The adult race at 6:55 is approximately 5 and a quarter miles, mainly fields and footpaths, but some tarmac.  The route is at http://valleystriders.org.uk/hcaptrl.jpg .

The race is for V S members, but you may each bring up to 2 guests (members of other clubs or unattached runners).

Humber Bridge Half (from Chris Sawyer)

Three Valley Striders ventured across to Humberside for the Humber Bridge Half Marathon. The course offers the opportunity to run both ways across the Humber Bridge and is surprisingly undulating for those expecting land around an estuary to be flat. Apart from the slip roads onto the bridge which are of course uphill there is a long hill known locally as Cardiac Hill which comes at around 9 miles. To my eyes the event was well organised with plenty of water stations en route.

I did not see any of the other Striders but I can report that Hayley Nancolas finished second woman in the W35-39 category. The Striders results (showing chip and finish times) were

Hayley Nancolas  1:34:48  1:34:53
Chris Sawyer  1:42:32  1:43:00
Stuart Harris   2:05:28  2:06:11

This takes my half marathons for the year to six – six more to go although I am running out of Yorkshire Half marathons so I am considering travelling to Pendle, Conwy and Milton Keynes over the next six months to reach my aim of twelve for the year.

Transylvania 50k (from Ross Bibby)
