Saturday 7 February - Rombald’s Stride

At the time of writing, this event is still ON.  If I hear anything before Friday evening, I’ll put a message on the front page of our website www.valleystriders.org.uk

Jonathan Cocker emailed a couple of weeks ago, and I apologise for not passing this on to you, especially as the Ilkley Beer Festival that he mentions is now sold out.

Just to let you know that Eric, David & myself will be doing the Rombalds stride on Saturday 7th February. We will be going steady and walking up the hills, if anyone who has not done it before would like to join us then they are welcome. We are going to the Ilkley Beer festival on the Saturday night after the race where there will be two of our beers on Show ‘New Born Bitter’ & ‘Goldilocks And The Three Beers’. We have set up a micro brewery above Ilkley at Langbar called ‘Moorview Brewery’! If any members have pubs, restaurants etc and require real ales for their fine establishments or anyone just wants a barrel of fine ale for a party then they can feel free to give me a call on 07971661150.

Cheers (quite literally),

Jonathan

At the time of writing, this is still ON.  If I hear anything before Monday evening, I’ll put a message on the front page of our website www.valleystriders.org.uk

Meet at the Indoor Sports Centre at about 7pm, ready to run at 7:10pm.

Sunday 22 February – Snake Lane 10

32 Striders made the deadline and were accepted.  Names are on www.valleystriders.org.uk/vslists.htm   NB another 4 or 5 Striders made the deadline and were rejected despite the organiser saying they’d keep places for us.

4 of these 32 have dropped out and replacements have taken up their entries.  This will be done officially (rule 5 of the 17 rules www.valleystriders.org.uk/17rules.htm )

The waiting list now stands at 5 or 6 more.  So while I’m not wishing on anyone sickness and ill-health, can I remind you that if you don’t think you’re going to run, to let me know so that I can reallocate your number to another Strider.

I’m hoping Abbey Runners will be suggesting somewhere to meet after the race.  If not, then since I have the CUP at the moment, I’ll be retaining it whether or not we score more points than them!

Tuesday 24 February – Lasagne Night with special guest

Please book in your diaries now – details to follow next week!

Coaching Courses

We now have approval for 50% funding from Leeds Athletics Development Group; Valley Striders will pay the other 50%.  All we need now are some Striders to commit to one day’s coaching course.

Our main aim is to send 4 or more Striders on Jog Leaders courses.  They will then support training nights and/or help new runners to the club.

But for anyone who would like to consider coaching our more experienced runners, we also have access to funding for the England Athletics level 1 and level 2 coaching courses. NB anyone who has previous experience of leading training sessions and/or mentoring runners may be able to be fast-tracked straight to level 2.

Please contact me if you want to apply for these or would like further information.  We need names by Sunday 15 February at the latest.

Sunday 10 May -  Leeds Half Marathon

Leeds Half Marathon website Entry forms now available at http://www.leeds.gov.uk/Leisure_and_culture/Arts_and_entertainment/leeds_half_marathon_.aspx

There are 3800 places this year, over 1000 are already taken, 5 of these are Striders.

Here’s the entry form http://www.leeds.gov.uk/files/Internet2007/2009/6/half-marathon-entry-form-only.pdf

Here’s a colourful entry form http://www.leeds.gov.uk/files/Internet2007/2009/6/final%20entry%20form%20-%20hm.pdf   It’s 8megabytes so I hope you’ve got fast broadband.  If not then you could always pick one up from John Charles Centre on Sunday when you register for the cross country.

Closing date is 10 April, but I bet it fills by the middle of March.  You have been warned!

Note that the Sheffield Half Marathon is on 26 April (same day as London), has a limit of 5500, 2000 already entered, 50pence cheaper than Leeds but I expect your petrol costs will be more.  This is also the Yorkshire Vets ½ marathon championship. http://www.sheffieldmarathon.com/content.php?nPageID=195

Note that the Yorkshire Vets 5k championship is held as part of the Esholt 5k series of 3 races in May.  Entry forms are available http://www.stbedesac.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/JC2009.doc   VS Grand Prix points for these races!

I’m still hoping for a few comments about the new scoring system.  There has been one in favour, one against so far.  If I don’t get any more votes / opinions, I’ll have to go for a compromise solution.  (Which no-one will understand)

Yorkshire Vets race at Horsforth – Sunday 1 February

Sara Dyer finished 44th out of 68 ladies, Andrew Thompson finished 27th out of 102 gents

Marrakech Half Marathon - 25 January

While most of us were having a weekend away from racing and catching up with our training, Tracey was running for the Welsh half marathon team in Marrakech.  This was the same event where, you may remember, last year she had tripped over a guy rope on the day before the race, and this put her out of action for a couple of months.  This year, no such problems as she finished 8th woman in a time of 1:18:15, and was the best-placed of the Welsh team.

Yorkshire XC Championships – early January

Madeleine Watson emailed:

Well I've tried to send you this twice but I keep getting told it can't be delivered. Its old news really but as it was the most important event of last weekend I feel it ought to be recorded.

It was 2 Watsons representing the Striders and unusually for a combination like this not a Webster in sight. Same area as the Yorkshire Vets 2 years ago though apparently health & safety meant missing out the area with the steep hill the other side of the lane. The ground remained frozen underfoot all day despite the constant racing and meant my rule of 15mm spikes for cross-country was dumped.

Results were:

Women: 1st Hatti Dean 20.37, 79th Madeleine Watson 28.58

Men: 1st Jorge Thomas Cardiff/P&B 32.51, 119th Jerry Watson 41.41

And finally ..

I’m sure I’ve missed something, but another VS Update will be along shortly.
