Rules for Tie-Breaks

Rules for Tie-Breaks - Individuals
NB Individuals in all categories are best 3 races to count.
Discard the worst race of each runner. If a runner has
run 4 races, discard the largest number of points. If a
runner has only run 3 races, there is no race to discard.

There is just one rule:

Examine races where the two runners have been in competition
with each other and have counted these races as their best 3.
Add up the times for these runners for these races. The runner
with the lowest total time wins.

Some examples follow.

Examples 1 to 3 show different situations where runners have run
either 3 or 4 races. Example 4 shows where a runner has run 4 races
and has two equal scores as worst - which one should be discarded?
   Example 5 shows a 3-way tie.

Example 1
                 race1 race2 race3 race4 best3
    Runner A notrun 4 5 3 12 (no race to discard)
    Runner B 1 5 6 notrun 12 (no race to discard)
  times
    Runner A notrun 24:42 25:11 22:35
    Runner B 21:22 24:45 25:21 notrun
  after discards
    Runner A notrun 24:22 25:11 ignore 49:33 }only races 2 & 3
    Runner B ignore 24:25 25:21 notrun 49:46 }are added
                                             Runner A wins

Example 2
                 race1 race2 race3 race4 best3

    Runner D 21:22 24:45 25:21 notrun
  after discards
    Runner C 21:42 24:22 25:11 discard 71:15 }races 1 2 3
    Runner D 21:22 24:25 25:21 notrun 71:08 }are added
                                             Runner D wins

Example 3
                 race1 race2 race3 race4 best3
    Runner E 3 4 5 6 12 (discards 6 in race 4)
    Runner F 1 7 6 5 12 (discards 7 in race 2)
  times

    Runner F 21:22 discard 25:21 ignore 46:43 }are added
                                             Runner F wins

Example 4
                 race1 race2 race3 race4 best3
    Runner G 3 4 5 6 12 (discards 6 in race 4)
    Runner H 1 6 6 5 12 (discards one of the 6's)
  times
    Runner G 21:42 24:42 25:11 22:35
    Runner H 21:22 25:04 25:21 22:20
if runner H discards the 6 in race 2
    Runner G 21:42 ignore 25:11 discard 46:53 }only races 1 & 3
    Runner H 21:22 discard 25:21 ignore 46:43 }are added
if runner H discards the 6 in race 3
    Runner G 21:42 24:42 ignore discard 46:24 }only races 1 & 2
    Runner H 21:22 25:04 discard ignore 46:26 }are added
since runner H is allowed to discard his worst race,
he discards race 2 and wins by 10 seconds

Example 5
                 race1 race2 race3 race4 best3
    Runner J 3 4 5 6 12 (discards 6 in race 4)
    Runner K 1 7 6 5 12 (discards 7 in race 2)
    Runner L 4 notrun 4 4 12 (no race to discard)
  times
    Runner J 21:42 24:42 25:11 22:55
    Runner K 21:22 25:05 25:21 22:20
    Runner L 21:50 notrun 25:00 22:10
  after discards
    Runner J 21:42 ignore 25:11 discard 46:53 }only races 1 & 3
    Runner K 21:22 discard 25:21 ignore 46:43 }are added
    Runner L     21:50 notrun  25:00 ignore  46:50  }
                                             Runner K wins

Note that we do not count races that have been discarded by
any runner - they may have had an off-day and perhaps
were making up numbers for their team so should not be
penalised for a non-counting event for them as individuals.

Rules for Tie-Breaks - Teams in Junior Categories
NB Teams in all junior categories are best 3 races to count.
Discard the worst race of each team. If a club has had
a complete team in 4 races, discard the race in which they
had the largest number of runner points. If a club has only
had a complete team in 3 races, there is no race to discard.

There is just one rule:

Examine races where the two teams have been in competition
with each other and have counted these races as their best 3.
Add up the runner points for these teams for these races.
The team with the lowest total runner points wins.

Some examples follow.

Examples 6 to 8 show different situations where teams have completed
either 3 or 4 races. Example 4 shows where a team has completed 4 races
and has two equal scores as worst - which one should be discarded?
   Example 5 shows a 3-way tie.
