As 9 May is the second Tuesday in the month, we will be at the track(s), juniors and  beginners/improvers 6pm at GSAL, intermediates and advanced runners 7pm at Beckett Park, see website www.valleystriders.org.uk for details

As 16 May is the third Tuesday in the month, all sessions will be from Far Moss, see website for details.

Junior Training Awards

Last Tuesday, 10 Valley Striders juniors received bronze medals for attending 25 training sessions and 5 juniors received silver medals for 50 sessions (see pictures on front page of website).

The total number of medals awarded so far is 88 bronze, 33 silver and 8 gold (100 sessions).

Club junior races and club handicap Tuesday 23 May

All races are free to enter and all races are open to club members and non-members including friends of existing members and juniors on the waiting list.  We would like to be notified about non-members in advance, please email juniors@valleystriders.org.uk for the junior race or rickandsue1@sky.com for the club handicap.

Meeting place for race start and postcode for parking are on the front page of the website www.valleystriders.org.uk.  Note that it is a 3 minute jog / 6 minute walk from Alwoodley Lane to the start.

On the night, we will be asking parents of juniors to marshal along the half mile length of the junior route as (especially if it is a nice evening) there are likely to be walkers, dogs and bicycles on the route.

We need a few marshals for the 5 mile race, if you can help please email Sue Sunderland rickandsue1@sky.com . The race can't take place without these marshals.

Afterwards we hope to have food at Far Moss, details to follow.

VS Junior Races - Tuesday 11 July (provisional date)

We are considering holding some junior races from Far Moss to raise money for Lineham Farm Children's Centre - these will be open to all junior runners.

Last Tuesday 42 juniors and 24 beginners/improvers trialled a 1 mile circuit around the fields and woods behind Far Moss and it seems we have a viable route.  (NB many thanks to Stuart, James and Ben Williams-Dustan who checked out the route I'd laid and adjusted, taped and snipped as needed).

Please could all parents join the "juniors" facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/369749209844475/ so we can continue the discussion of dates and resources.

VS Grand Prix Events

Note that all races inside Leeds City boundary (including Otley) are part of Leeds Race Series, see www.leedsathletics.net for details.

IntermediatesTraining for Eccup 10 (message from Bethany Lovell

Are any intermediates planning on running Eccup 10 on 2nd July? It's in 8 weeks so we are thinking of creating a training plan and some opportunities for group runs based around building up to 10mile distance (from current long run of 10k)  and group runs reccying parts of the route, building up to full thing.

If you are interested please email coaching@valleystriders.org.uk

VS victory in Boston Marathon (from Sean Cook)

Just a quick report from the Boston Marathon...no, not THAT one unfortunately! The second running of the Boston Marathon (UK) took place alongside a half marathon on Easter Monday in Boston, Lincolnshire. The club was represented by Myra Jones in the marathon and myself in the half. With ideal running conditions and a perfectly flat course, we both recorded personal bests, with Myra claiming the first lady prize in the marathon. A well organised, scenic and friendly event that we both very highly recommend. Results as follows:

Full - 17th Myra Jones 03:02:07

Half - 33rd Sean Cook 01:32:30

V S Grand Prix

Myra and Sean have been awarded their points in the VSGP Any Other Marathon and Any Other Half categories.

St Gemma's Bubble (from Suzie Shenderey)

Ben Shenderey (VS junior member, aged 8) ran the St Gemma's Bubble run at 2pm on the 22nd April 2017. Ben came in first place. The run was over fields and involved a lot of coloured bubbles! The race was not timed but Ben managed the course in approximately 26 minutes.

Stockton Duathlon (from Ben Hall)

Quick write-up for Stockton. Great race, great location just by the river and the weather was beautiful. Finally got to meet some new faces - Michael Mansfield kindly gave me some sunscreen and John Shanks flagged me down just before the start. Started off strong but suffered with wheezing (due to pollen?) on lap 1 of the run and with stomach cramping (due to having a bite of Marlous Hall's halloumi) on lap 2. Still happy with a sub 40min 10km on the lovely riverside course though. The bike course was technical but still very fast - I averaged 21.3mph. I was in two minds about bothering put on the tt bars due to the nature of the course and in the end decided to go for it, thinking that I don't have to use them if the course was too tricky. It turned out to be fine - plenty of straights and some of the bends could be taken whilst on the tt bars. Oulton is fast but gets harder with each lap as the undulations take their toll, this course got easier to me as I gauged my effort well and got better at negotiating the numerous roundabouts. I ended it strong (39th and 8/25) with a 19:12 min 5km and almost, but not quite, caught John, who had a great race (38th and 7/25). The event was really well organised and it was my first duathlon with the standard format of 10-40-5. We all know that Liz Ball topped her category - you should really devise a victory pose/dance Liz. Good racing from Michael too, who finished 181st and 5/10 in the same race as the rest of us and to Alison Eaves-Lai who raced in the morning sprint event and came 169th and 6/14. 285 competitors in the sprint race and 263 in the standard. The bike route felt safe and not too crowded. The standard of competition was very high due the fact that both races were world champ qualifiers. Thanks to Marlous for her cheers, photography skills and for my post race ice-cream.
