Yorkshire Bicycle Show (advert)

Countdown to the Yorkshire Bicycle Show has begun! Taking place in Leeds Town Hall over the weekend of 20-22 September, there’ll be a host of exhibitors from all areas of cycling with a range of new products on show.

Here at the Show we’re proud of Yorkshire and the organisations that make it a success. To thank them, we are offering local businesses free tickets to a special preview event on the Friday afternoon, before the Show opens to the general public over the weekend.

As part of this, we’d like to invite members of your club who work in the region the opportunity to come along to the free event, along with their colleagues, to start the Show off with a bang.

We’d be grateful if you could circulate this email to your members, asking them to sign up with their names and those of their colleagues who will be attending at the following link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/event/8021970931

Tickets to the Show itself are £5 in advance (with under 12’s going free) and can be bought from the Show’s website: (www.yorkshirebicycleshow.com ).

We look forward to welcoming you, your members and their colleagues later this month!

VSCycling Time Trial – from Andy Stoneman

On 28 August night we ran the Valley Striders Cycle Club Time Trial for the second time. An undulating 10.4 mile course, that starts off with a fast 4 mile blast into Collingham along the A58 and then climbs back to Shadwell via East Keswick.

We had 15 riders and finishers (just). Paul Sanderson took a more scenic route and Patrick stopped off with his favourite bike mechanic Dr Kev in Wyke. Many thanks to Ged Coll for helping organise it, and particular thanks to Ian Iain Currie and his daughter, Paul Furness, Kevin Ainley, Tracey Morris and Ian Oram for helping out with the marshalling.

I think we had several PBs compared to when we ran this for the first time back in May, so well done to everyone, the training is obviously paying off! Some fella called Andy Stoneman came home first in 29.01, closely followed by Mick Wrench at 30.20 and Ged Coll in 31.39 (an improvement of nearly 4 minutes!).

Ramsbottom Fell – report from Steve Webb

The fell section were busy on Saturday morning 31 August running in the Capricorn long distance orienteering score event at Ramsbottom Fell, organised by Pendle Forest Orienteers.  You could opt for a 2 hour, 3 hour or 4 hour time limit.  On the 3 hour event Kim and Julia competed as a pair and were the first ladies in a great 3rd place overall.  Thomas also ran the 3 hour event, and with some good route choice he actually won the event outright.  Sara and I went for the extra value for money option of the 4 hour course.  This was won by James Logue who bagged all controls well within the time limit. I was happy enough with 10th, just behind M50 rival Mark Seddon who is very handy at this sort of thing - he has won the Elite course at the KIMM/OMM more times than anybody.   And Sara was happy enough at having beaten two men!  All in all a good warm up for LCW the next day.

Leeds Country Way

As most of you know by now, Valley Striders scored a unique clean sweep in the LCW, winning all three trophies – men’s, ladies’ and vets. – each by about 10 minutes.  Congratulations to all our winners.  We also took 6 pairs of fastest leg trophies so in all took home 51 of the 78 available trophies.

It was also spotted that we also had the first third-placed team to finish, but unfortunately the sequence was broken by Horsforth 5th team coming in ahead of our 5th team.

Many many thanks to our selectors, John and Myra.  And even more thanks to John for completing 10 recce runs even though he was on holiday on the day of the race.

Travelling from afar for the race were Pam (weekend from Croydon), Tosh (day trip from Birmingham) and Andy Settle (stayed the night before in Lancashire).

Our multi-national squad included Pam (South Sudan), Tomas (Czech), Kim & John (Scotland), Myra (Wales), Sarah Graham (Morpeth), Julia (Trafford), Gary (Birmingham).

Myra and I were relieved that no last minute subs were needed, but there were, as usual, a few swaps in the final week leading up to the race and several pairs now relying on the navigation of one person.  I don’t think too many wrong turns were taken!

Autumn Junior Mile and Club Handicap

Junior Mile

A great run by Max just keeping a couple of yards ahead of Joe.  Max’s 5:52 in summer still stands as the record, but Ceara took 20 secs off the girls record.

In summer there were a record 29 juniors and 8 adults; these numbers easily exceeded by 38 juniors and 12 adults!!

Autumn Handicap 5 miles

The Handicap cup was presented to Pascale as first-over-the-line Rachael had not recorded a qualifying time so was given an arbitrary handicap.

Apologies that because of where I’d placed the start, a little out of range of the waiting masses, a few runners missed their start time.  But there were two runners who were very public-spirited with their handicaps and asked for a later start time as they felt the form book was inaccurate.

Thanks to our marshals and officials – Mike & Eileen Crosfill, Pat Umpleby, Grace Thomas, Kathy & Ken Kaiser, Liz Reddington, Paul White, Ian Place and John Umpleby.

There were 75 finishers, 2 more than the previous record set 6 weeks ago.

Race report from Steve Dixon

A short race report in case no one else has sent one into you - I'd hate Kim's success to go uneported!

For the 3rd year running the weather conditions were good with sunshine, mild temperatures and little in the way of wind.  There were 9 Striders on the start line for the full marathon at 10am and a further 2 Striders in the half starting at 10.30am.

Franco led the Striders contingent in the full until an unfortunate stumble resulted in a twisted ankle and an enforced retirement.  Kim took on the baton and in a spectacular run finished first lady and 16th in the field - a minute ahead of the 2nd placed lady!

   1 Ged Callan  Bingley     03:18:29

  16 Kim Threadgall-Spence   03:46:55 (1st Lady)

  66 Steve Dixon             04:32:48 (1st MV60)

  71 Alistair Smyth          04:34:29

115 Sarah Smith             05:08:56

142 Simon Barker            05:30:28

Out of 185 starters 179 finished, Striders Franco Pardini and Rob Hamilton were among the 6 not able to finish.

In the half marathon Paul Smith came home in 23rd position in 02:02:40  and  Amanda (Meg) Galsworthy came 166th in 02:47:23.  246 finishers out of the 250 starters.  Winner was Ben Mounsey of Calder Valley in  01:41:04.

Race report from Kim Threadgall

I ran the 'Yorkshireman trail race' on Sunday for the first time which is an off road marathon starting in Haworth.  Apart from the Stanbury Splash earlier in the year I haven't done any running in that area before and I always like to explore new places to run.  I had a leisurely drive to Haworth although somehow seeing Sarah Smith and Steve Dixon cycle from Leeds to Haworth made me feel guilty about not doing enough that day!

As always there were quite a few Valley Striders at the start, some were doing the full marathon and some were doing the half (which is actually closer to 15 miles) and started half an hour after us.  The sun decided to come out which was good considering how bad the rain had been on Friday...

Off we went and after about a mile of running on the roads we hit the trails, the scenery was stunning, beautiful hills and countryside - it wasn't too rough underfoot so it gave me the chance to appreciate the view.  From a race point of view I found myself in second place for about the first 2.5 hours...I could feel myself slowly catching the first female.  Annoying she was with a group of guys who were leading the way and after that I couldn't see anyone for a while...if I passed her it meant I would be leading everyone and it is always easier to follow people in these races as you are constantly looking out for stickers on lamp posts etc.  I eventually did pass them but she stuck to me like glue and I couldn't shake her off.  Although the first 14 miles ish is very undulating the second half has lots of long flat fast sections followed by some steep climbs, as you can imagine a lot of people were cramping up over the second half and I seemed to pass quite a lot of people.  Unfortunately I soon went passed Franco who had to pull out with a twisted ankle!

Thankfully we caught up with someone who seemed to know the way which was good however, we then came to a junction and he turned right, the others followed us but someone was shouting at us to go back...I was about to turn around but the guy in front who was pretty confident about the route told us we were going the correct way.  I stuck with him but the female and the group of guys turned back....it didn't take long before I realised we were not going the right way but he said it would be fine.  My heart sank as I knew I would have lost my lead and eventually we did come out on the correct path and although I had dropped into second place I was probably 'only' about 20 or 30 seconds behind.

Once again I caught her and managed to get in front but by this point my legs were struggling.....with about a mile to the end she passed me again and then I caught her on a downhill section.  With about half a mile to go I knew I had to push as hard as I could even though I knew it was going to hurt and finishing on a steep uphill road section wasn't going to help but somehow I crossed the finish line after 3 hours and 46 minutes, first female and a new course record by 15 minutes!  The second female crossed the finish line about 45 seconds behind me...

Everyone seemed to enjoy it but agreed it was a tough race, I think if you enjoy hills and flat running then it is definitely a good race to do and would recommend it for anyone that hasn't done it to do it next year!  Lots of great results from everyone and Steve Dixon also won first male 60 although we all agreed he doesn't look that age :-)
