Lots of events in this week’s edition so I’ll put them in date order
Jon Parker world tour starting Saturday 27 April
Jon emailed - I am planning to take a year out from work to try and fulfil a long held ambition to cycle around the world. I am setting off from Roundhay on Monday 29 April and pedalling east to Hull, Zeebrugge, Europe and hopefully beyond!
When I’m away I can be reached at email@example.com. I’ll also be keeping a blog if anyone is interested in following my progress: www.jpbiketrip.com (not much content there yet, but watch this space!).
I’m having a few send off drinks on Sat 27 April 8pm in the Adelphi. Everyone welcome and would be great to see people before I leave.
Club Junior Mile, Club Handicap and Food – Tuesday 30 April
Club junior one mile race by Eccup Reservoir assemble 6:15pm, start time 6:20pm
Club handicap 5 miles assemble 6:45pm, slowest runner off first at 6:55pm
Start location http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?x=429750&y=441300&z=3
Followed by lasagne at 8:30pm (note only one sitting). Please book lasagne at firstname.lastname@example.org by 10pm Sunday saying whether you want carnivore or veggie lasagne and whether you want apple pie
Leos Beer Fest – Friday 3 & Saturday 4 May
Leos have organised a beer festival for Friday 3rd (from 7pm) and Saturday 4th May (from 12 noon) to raise money for the club. Venue – Leos.
There will be over 30 beers and 6 ciders featuring local brewers such as Elland, Ridgeside, Salamander, Collingham, Ilkley and Kirkstall. There will be live music each day in the marquees which will be erected out the front of the club. Hot food will be available and the entrance fee is £5 which includes a glass and your first drink.
We’d like everyone to try and support this event for the good of the club and if you can come along then please do. The general consensus from those who have said they will be going is that most Valley Striders will be going on the Friday whilst the beer is nice and fresh! So, dust your drinking goggles off and we’ll see you there!
Any questions, please email Dan at email@example.com.
NB Striders are sponsoring a barrel of guest beer on the night, possibly one of Paul Briscoe’s brews.
The Fox Trail Race – Sunday 5 May – email from Abbey Runners
Abbey Runners are organising a trail race over the May Day Bank Holiday at The Fox Inn, Thorner, LS14 3DX from 11am on Sunday 5th May. We would be grateful for your support from your club at what will be a low key and relaxed event.
The race will be a time trial that can be run individually or in pairs. Entries will be taken on the day from 11am but runners can arrive and start at anytime before 12.30pm. The run is approx 6.3 miles and mainly off-road on public footpaths and tracks. Runners will be guided around the route by written route instructions with the added incentive of a voucher for a drink at the pub afterwards. Entry £5 with £2 voucher given back.
It's a slightly different format to the usual trail race but we think that your runners will like it. It has proved popular elsewhere in England (one of our new members has brought the idea up from Essex with him!) so we hope it will be successful here too. We're inviting other local running clubs to come and try this event and bring some added competition. As this is the first race of this type we would like to target committee members and runners in your club that like to run off-road who could provide us with feedback and spread the word. There is plenty of scope for more races to be organised so please help us to make the first race a success.
Follow this link for more details: https://sites.google.com/site/countrytrailraces/
There is a registration link on the site, please note this is really just for us to gauge likely numbers and wouldn't prevent extras on the day!
We hope that some of your club members will be able to support the event.
Regards, Alison (Club Secretary - Abbey Runners)
Training – Tuesday 7 May – Fell Training
Simon Vallance emailed - the next fell session will be a recce of the Jack Bloor route (the race is the following Tuesday 14th).
Bob says - we’re not sure whether it will be a pie and peas evening – if so we’ll need three sittings to include the late arrivals back from Ilkley – see next week’s V S Update or watch the website.
Simon also said “Jack Bloor may also be something that interests our junior section as there are various age group races before the main event at 7.15” Parents – if you want any information, take a look at www.jackbloor.co.uk and/or email Simon on firstname.lastname@example.org .
Leeds Half Marathon – Sunday 12 May
There are some number exchanges appearing on the VS facebook and/or VS forum pages. The official Valley Striders policy is that we do not approve of any number changes and if you do use someone else’s number please consider the implications www.valleystriders.org.uk/17rules.htm
Training – Tuesday 14 May – Track for everyone (except Jack Bloor racers)
Following a very successful track session at Grammar School At Leeds last Tuesday with over 25 juniors and over 15 adults, we’ve now booked the track at GSAL for the second Tuesday in the month through to September. Thanks to Richard Irvine for setting this up and to Andy & Richard for leading the session.
So second Tuesday in the month will be beginners, improvers and juniors 6pm at GSAL, intermediates and experienced runners 7pm at Leeds Met.
Bradford Millennium Way Relay – Sunday 16 June
We are now looking for teams for the Bradford Millennium Way Relay on Sunday 16 June. This is teams of 5 pairs, total 50 miles, all within Bradford City Council boundary, but nowhere near Bradford, details at http://tinyurl.com/BMW-Relay . Route starts and finishes at Bingley Rugby Club, and goes via Marsh (near Oxenhope), Laycock, Silsden and Ilkley.
We won the mixed team prize from 2002 to 2005 and the vets in 2006, it would be good to get back in the prize list again. And if we could get 3 teams (30 runners) this year it would be a sound base of knowledge for next year, so the first 10 who apply get a guaranteed place.
Please email email@example.com if you’d like to run.
Meanwood Valley Trail
We had a record 115 finishers in the junior races (may need to consider splitting into two separate races next year). There were 258 finishers in the senior race, which was especially good considering there were other races at Hawksworth and Spofforth the same day.
Thanks to around 65 of you who came and helped on the day (particular mention to 5 of the Schofield family and 3 of the Wilkins family) and another 10 who helped with various pre-race tasks.
