Meanwood Valley Trail – Final Information

There are quite a few changes from Monday’s list – these are in blue.

Anyone else available to help, please contact me, there are still THREE spare spots.

Also anyone on the list for section 2 that could help marshal the car park please come for 08:30 and then join Sylvia’s team at 09:45

NB this has also been updated on the website www.valleystriders.org.uk/trail09m.htm and may be easier to read there, depending on what sort of email you use.

THANK YOU to everyone who has volunteered to help on Saturday (16th). Here are the final instructions.

Please note that you may be on the marshals list more than once (in some cases 3 times), so check the full list to see your locations.  If you have volunteered but aren’t on the list, let me know!

Anyone that is available to come early to help set out the course, please contact me.

Maps of the route are on the website, identifying all the point numbers on the map.

Junior route http://valleystriders.org.uk/meanmapj2.jpg

Senior route near Leos http://valleystriders.org.uk/meanmap1.jpg

Senior route central section   http://valleystriders.org.uk/meanmap2.jpg

Senior route meanwood park  http://valleystriders.org.uk/meanmap3.jpg

Please try to share cars if possible.  If at Leos, please park close together (and follow the car-parkers instructions!).  Also, if at Leos, note that the busiest time for getting in will be 9:15 to 9:30 so allow extra time!  If marshalling in Meanwood Park then if possible park at Meanwood end and walk up to Smithy Mills / Parkside Road because there will only be limited parking at Smithy Mills.

All marshals should report to their team leader as shown below. You will be given a yellow bib, told where to stand and which direction to point (good idea!) and given two or three key phone numbers in the event of incidents. Ideally please print an entry form from the website, then if anyone asks what is going on, the entry form explains a lot, you can also mention that this race is expected to raise over £1,200 for Lineham Farm.

Entry form http://valleystriders.org.uk/trail09fweb.doc

HERE ARE YOUR CONTACT PHONE NUMBERS FOR THE DAY, ideally print this whole email but, as a minimum, copy down these numbers plus that of your team leader.

  • Marshalling Problems - Chief Marshal – Dan Murray  07702 819 920
  • Non emergency first aid and site issues - also Dan Murray
  • Emergency medical problems - St John Ambulance – We will get details on Saturday.  Dan will call the team leaders.  Please get this number from your team leader
  • Critical problems with race route (runners off course) or general public - Bob Jackson 07775 898 558

Section leaders and/or marshals within the section at half mile intervals should make contact with Dan

  • when they are in position
  • as the first runner approaches their section.
  • when the last runner passes.

As runners pass,

  • please could marshals make sure they go the right way,
  • ensure no issues with walkers and riders (they have equal rights to use the paths) - please ask them to walk/ride on the LEFT
  • monitor potential incidents
  • encourage the runners appropriately
  • if you are near one of the mile numbers, let the runners know how far they’ve got
  • after the last runner passes, if you are redeployed elsewhere, move there as soon as possible
  • if this is your last job, collect any signs, tape etc in their vicinity and return it to their section leader, then either go home and take a well deserved rest, or go for a run, or go for a drink with Dan

If, for any reason, you are unable to marshal, then up till Friday, please contact me by email or on 07775-898-558. But if you are indisposed on Saturday contact Dan Murray  07702 819 920

We are expecting over 400 for the senior race and about 80 for the junior race.

Did I say that there would be a bottle of Meanwood Meander beer for all the marshals? There will!

Also Dan Murray says that they’ll be going for a drink after the race, details to follow!

Finally, a couple of amusing stories in the life of a race organiser.

I got a phone call this morning, a lady wanted to know if she was in the race, she’d entered this week. I didn’t recognize the name but looked up the list of entries; she wasn’t there.  “When did you post it?”, I said.  “Yesterday morning at 9 o’clock”, she said.  “Oh, our postal delivery hasn’t arrived today”, I said.  “Oh, I thought it would have arrived yesterday afternoon”, she said.

I’ve put a message on my answering machine saying we have just 50 places left and suggesting to arrive early. I’m now getting emails saying “How early is early?”.  My standard reply is “I have been suggesting 09:15 to everyone who has asked this question!”.  Expect a queue out of the door of Leos at 9:14 !!!
