Training and Food? on Tuesday 30
October
All sessions from
Leos. If food is available, there will be another
email from 'vsupdate', please look out for it, and it
will also be published in the VSAC Members and VSAC Juniors Facebook groups.
Peco
Cross Country (from Myra Jones and Bob Jackson)
This year all entries are online and you can
either enter the whole series or each race individually. If you're going to run 3 or more races, it is
cheaper to enter the whole series
VALLEY
STRIDERS JUNIORS SHOULD NOT ENTER YET, WE WILL PROVIDE YOU WITH A DISCOUNT CODE
FOR FREE ENTRY.
Online entry opened on Monday 15th October,
and will close (for series entries) on Thursday 15th November (10 days before Race

name and club (which should minimise the risk of anyone running in the wrong
number). Individual race entries will remain open (for Race 1) until Friday
23rd November).
See www.valleystriders.org.uk/up181013.htm
for details.
Membership
fees
There will be an email from [email protected]
late next week with details of junior membership fees. This will also include the Peco discount
code.
Membership fees for adults will be decided at
the AGM in November.

Please email [email protected] if you would like to apply for a place. We
will close entries at 10pm on 6th November.

TOUR
REPORT
V
S Autumn Tour to Bilbao (from Ian Sanderson)
There were 36 runners and supporters on this
year's tour. I think everyone agreed it was one of the nicest places we've
visited well worth a city-break holiday. Despite both
having a modern art museum and a transporter bridge, Bilbao bears very little
resemblance to Middlesbrough. The sun shone most days, it was pleasantly
warm and the pintxos were delicious (Basque tapas),
if a little small. But the star was the Guggenheim museum fabulous to look
at, and some really good permanent and temporary exhibits inside and out (I was
blown away by the knitted / crocheted, Dr. Who / Dr. Seuss type monster in the main atrium 'Egeria'). And
it was free this weekend (20th anniversary)!
As for the races...well, Bilbao's USP is it
is a night time race, starting around dusk (7pm). This does pose some unusual
race-day questions; what to eat and when, how much sight-seeing to do
beforehand, do we drink this bottle of red that comes with the 'Menu del dai'? Judging by times and peoples' post-race reactions,
not all of us got the answers right. The start was well organised, with
fireworks and the obligatory 'Final Countdown' by Europe blaring out by the San
Mares stadium (home of AC Bilbao). But it was surprisingly humid, with most
striders pouring water over themselves from the off (and some resorting to more
extreme cooling measures). The course was quite convoluted with some ups and
downs and more than a few soul-destroying out-and-back sections. The first lap
(10K and half) was very well supported, with most runners doing the half
marathon (myself included). For the marathon runners who continued onto the second
lap, the field thinned to ones and twos, the support evaporated and it was
apparently a fairly grim experience (until they got to the VS supporters
corner, of course). But give it a week and they'll forget that and start
planning their next marathons.
Tour Awards
- VS tour decathletes (attended all 10 tours): Patrick Barrett, Danny Murray,
Tim Towler, Carole Towler.
- Fastest marathon time: Roy Huggins
- Fastest HM: Victoria Sims
- Fastest 10k: Emma Wallace
- First ever HM: William Sims, Rachel Bentley
- And TOUR STAR was Alistair Smyth, for his perseverance in the
Marathon.
There were some other awards, but you have to
have been on the tour to find them out!

Bilbao Also-Rans (But aren't fully in the
results)
- John Wallace, with impeccable timing, came down with something and wisely
decided to not run. He did drag himself out to support, though (thanks John!).
- Steph Gledhill made it to the start line of the marathon despite a really bad
chest infection in her marathon build-up. She set off to see how it went, but
was still struggling with her breathing so stopped at the half distance in
around 1:55.
- Sue Sunderland had intended to do the marathon but got injured a few weeks
beforehand. Unable to run (literally), she decided to 'power-walk' the first
lap, finishing the half marathon distance in under 3
hours. In fact she looked so good crossing the line that she was interviewed by
a TV crew who thought she'd finished third in the marathon!
- Finally Myra Jones was cruising along in the marathon in a top 10 position
until, on the sparsely populated / poorly lit / unmarshalled
second lap, she and another runner took a wrong turn. They must have repeated
one of the many out and back sections as they suddenly found themselves behind
the 3:30 hour pacer. She was understandably annoyed (!) and decided to save
herself for another day and pulled up.
The supporters deserve a huge 'thank you' for
putting up with us prima-donna runners. Thanks to Kathy, Rick (and John W.) for
popping up in unexpected places to cheer, and to Heather and Helen who walked
all of 10m from the hotel to the bar next-door to set-up our glamorous
riverside 'VS spectator's corner' where we all eventually assembled to cheer on
the marathon runners (if you've seen the photos, any resemblance to a bunch of
tramps drinking in a bus-stop are entirely coincidental).
Special thanks to
Kathy Robbins for all her organising (mainly on scraps of paper on our kitchen
table), Paul Sanderson and the Hussey's for hazardous waste transportation (VS
vests), and everyone else who's had a hand in this year's tour.
The 36 attendees will soon have the chance to
nominate 2019 tour locations, and the outcome will be announced at the
Christmas Party. We hope some of you will join us next year.
