Adult
Training - Hi-vis and change of venue for hill sessions
We are now entering our winter training
schedule which takes place at High Ashes for the interval sessions and Meanwood
for the hill sessions.
This year we will be hill training on Carr
Manor Drive. This will allow for a more varied session and the paths are wider
than Church Lane so will be safer.
The first hill session is this week, please
either meet at Leo's or by the Carr Manor High School entrance.
Now that it's getting dark it is compulsory
to wear hi vis reflective clothing, without this you
will not be able to train with us.
This is for all Tuesday and Thursday runs.
Please see Facebook for full details of adult
training sessions.

before and would like any further information about them, email [email protected]

for school years 7 to 11 (usually at 10:20a.m. but some events may be earlier).
Last year 83 junior Striders took part in the
Peco series and 26 of these ran 4 or 5 races.
We're keen that every junior Strider takes part so please put the dates
in your diaries.

Meanwood
Valley Trail Race (from Steph)
The return of the Meanwood Valley Trail was a
success with brilliant feedback from the runners, praising and thanking the
marshals with comments such as 'some of the friendliest marshals ever'.
No one went the wrong way however a few
wanted to. The winner said it was well marked out and he normally goes the
wrong way (he should be slower and that wouldn't be a problem!).
After a few nervous weeks of not getting many
entrants we had 264 entries and 223 finishers (no, the others didn't get lost
unless they did on the way to collect their numbers).
The event raised £1,000 for Lineham Farm which is much more than we expected (we were
hoping to break even).
A huge thanks to the 90 club members + family
+ friends who helped make the day a success, you all did Valley Striders proud.
Next year will hopefully be bigger and
better.

Thank you to all the people who volunteered

RACE
REPORTS
Berlin
Marathon (from Martin Sutcliffe)
EasyJet is never a happy website, add this, add that - all at extra cost. Anyway, having negotiated the
website we (the family came) found ourselves at Manchester airport at an
unreasonable hour and in Berlin not long later. We went out a couple of days early
so spent Friday at Tropical Islands - 60km outside Berlin. Think centre parcs, but contained entirely within a old Zeppelin manufacturing dome. Swimming pools are
the big attraction. Expensive - but the nearly four year old loved it.
The expo is at a disused airfield. Great party atmosphere. Not as many freebies as London. A
quick bus ride from the one and only parkrun in Berlin - whose organisers must
be congratulated for coping with seven times their usual attendance!
The start area had the usual deficiency of portaloos, with incredible queues. Fortunately I'm not one
of those people who needs to use one 4.2 times at very
specific time points in a pre-race ritual.
The route stars in the Tiergarden
- towards and around the iconic victory column. I didn't notice many sights
after that. I started well - outperforming my previous marathons in the first
half. Felt really good, so I kept up the pace. Then 32km arrived. I had slowed
to a shuffle. There were people stopping for massages from the volunteers. Surely not. I didn't avail myself of the opportunity,
perhaps I should.
Water, horrid sports drink and iced tea was
available at water stations. Bananas and Apples at fruit
stations. The German gels were horrid - I forgot to pack my own and
after one taste decided the bananas would do.
Around the last corner the Brandenburg gate
came into view. Sprint finish? Maybe not. This was the
race where the World Record was broken - 2:01:39. Not by me! I am, as it turns
out, now a third of the way through the Abbott World Series. Only
four more to go. Running shoes back on. Still, completing my fourth
Marathon in 2 years - no matter how slowly - ain't
bad for an ex-overweight PE dodger. If I can get round one of these then so can
you!!
Wife reports that spectating was much easier
than in London - the U-bahn was not too busy, the
crowds moved to follow the runners - so she would pop up out of the station and
walk straight to the barriers to await my passing. Exits/entrances were right
by the barriers. Ice cream based bribery got the nearly four year
old round. All well assisted by the Garmin Live tracking from
my watch/phone which being live is much more accurate for her than the event
tracking at the 5k markers.
Oh - and the Easyjet
extras theme continues - 30 Euros for the finisher T-shirt. Even this tight
Yorkshireman is having one though. I did my best to drink the value in free Erdinger Alkoholfrei to make up
for it.
