Meanwood Trail Race 2018 (from Steph Gledhill)

Hello, we want to host the MVT in 2018, I’ve had some volunteers but we need a team of organisers.

Can you please let me know if you can help out with the organising and are willing to lead/partake in a small team of helpers.

This will count as your 2% which increases your chances of getting a London Marathon Club Ballot Place.

Please offer to help out in some way, if we don’t get enough volunteers then we won’t be able to host such a great event.

Please reply to the recent FB post or email [email protected]

V S Autumn Marathon Tour 2018 (from Kathy Robbins)

Kathy Robbins here with news of the 10th VS Autumn Marathon Tour. This will be to Bilbao in NE Spain.

It is a night-time event with HM and 10k options. We think it is on Sat 20 Oct but are double checking the date.

https://runedia.mundodeportivo.com/en/race/edp-bilbao-night-marathon-2018/20182852/

31 runners and supporters went to Toulouse this year and we hope a few more of you will come along in 2018.

I will announce core tour dates, flights and the main hotel in due course.  You are also welcome to make your own plans and join us there.

If you are at all interested and not part of the tour FB group, please request to join https://www.facebook.com/groups/483780568467971/

I can also be contacted at [email protected]  (NB two a's in Katharine and two b's in Robbins).

V S Fell Championship Final Table (from Steve Webb)

The final Fell Champs league is now on the website and includes the Wadsworth Half Trog.

This year we had 39 scorers in the Men's championship and the winner was Ross Bibby, who averaged over 90 points at his top 5 races and regained the prestigious trophy he won in 2015.  Ross left it late because his only qualifying Long category race came at Pendle in November.  There was a close battle for 2nd place with Simon Vallance just pipping Mick Loftus, who was the most prolific racer.

There were 19 scorers in the Ladies' championship and the very clear winner was Amanda Seims who has had some excellent results including scoring over 100 points at Fairfield.  Second was the ever-running ultra adventurer Sarah Smith and third was Josie Rothera.  It is good to see so many new names in the Ladies' championship this year: I hope they enjoyed running on the fells and will try some more races in 2018.

WYXC Senior Results - report from Myra Jones and Steve Webb

Myra : Final results from WYXC league are now available. Congratulations to Sue for winning her category and to Steve and Jerry Watson claiming a very closely fought 2nd and 3rd place in their category. Top 5 category finishes for Paul Kaiser, Matt Hallam and me.

Men finished 7th overall. Unfortunately, Ladies failed to get a team out for the final fixture so don't feature in final standings.

A huge thank you and well done to all those who represented the club.

Steve : I attended the (incredibly drawn out) prizegiving and collected the trophies for Sue Sunderland and Jerry Watson. Had a great tussle with Jerry over the 4 races: we each bagged two 2nds, one 3rd and one aberrant 5th. It went to aggregate time and I was just 18 seconds faster over 140 minutes of cross country running. Shame that John Convery was miles ahead

Kirkstall Abbey Trail Running Festival (from Chris Sawyer)

Saturday 18 November

A choice of four distances for these races organised by Its Grim Up North running ranging from 8 miles to an ultra (32 miles). I ran the half marathon. The route was similar to the Kirkstall trail race except in reverse so after running up the A65 and dropping down towards the river you then made your way over the fields to cross the river close to the Railway pub and then onto the canal. For those doing the half there then followed an out and back run along the towpath to Apperley Bridge with a short diversion on the way back which involved crossing the canal and then climbing up to the Calverley Road before running a short distance along the ring road before joining the canal again until you reached the Abbey Inn then back up to the A65 and returning to the Abbey to finish. My watch had the distance at 12.9 miles. If you like running along canal towpaths - which I do - the Its Grim Up North races most of which involve canal towpaths may be worth trying out.

Two Striders present -
Hayley Nancolas               1:33:22                 First lady and fifth overall
Chris Sawyer                      1:50:24                  39th

Vale of Clwyd Half Marathon (from Chris Sawyer)

Sunday 3 December

When you commit to running a half marathon every month in the year you find the choice of half marathons in December somewhat limited. This year I spotted this race in Denbighshire in North Wales.  Probably too far to go without an overnight stay but my wife did not object to a weekend in Chester. It was about a 40 minute drive from Chester to the village of Llandyrnog which is close to Ruthin. The race was organised by a personal trainer who puts on events to encourage his clients. The race was held on country roads around the villages surrounding Llandyrnog. The route was undulating but the two long climbs were only up very gradual gradients. The race although low key was efficiently marshalled with three water stations en-route.

I finished in 1:48.24 and was 29th out of 104 finishers.

I have now run 11 half marathons since I invested in a Garmin watch. So I can report that the most climbing I did in a half marathon is Burn Valley Half (July) which involved 415m of climbing which is 140m more climbing than any other half I ran. This was also a very hot day. Not surprisingly the Vale of York (Sept) was the flattest with only 44m of climbing according to the watch.
