REPORTS
Dales Trail Series 2017 (from John Hussey)
This Series of Trail Running in Swaledale comprises three events DT20, DT30 and DT40.
Having completed the DT20 & 30 earlier in the year the 23rd of September
was the date for the DT40. This is the last in the series and over a distance
of 42.2Km. There was also the pleasure of an ascent of 1016m over terrain
especially challenging as there had been very heavy rain just before to add
nicely to the "bogginess" if that's a real word.
This was my first Trail Marathon so started
off with some trepidation and an aim of just getting to the finish, time
unimportant. Fortunately I soon found myself with other runners and settled
into a steady pace with them which helped the nerves!
At
21Km I was still ok and felt reasonably confident of getting round the course.
As anticipated the final 8Km was tough though and not helped by a really lumpy
ankle turning downhill section towards the end. Never mind the pain, I finished
it!!!
As for results, winner on the day Ben Livesey romped easily home in 3h18m. Me,
in 5h41m in 88th place out of 148 finishers on the day. I would loved to have done it in 5h30m but
just missed out.
There was, however, a wonderful surprise for
me. There are prizes for those who sign up to do The Grand Slam (all 3 events)
and I won my age category for that . Even if I had
come last I would have won as no other MV60 had entered - not stupid enough
perhaps? Anyway I was decidedly chuffed to receive a very fancy Petzl head torch in the post as a prize. Over the Grand
Slam Series I came in 68th out of 117 entries which I'm quite happy about.
I have really enjoyed this well organized
Series which has seriously challenged my running. I have had the pleasure in
running with a super bunch of people in awesome surroundings.
Unfortunately there are no plans for the
Series next year which is a shame but I'm sure I'll find something else. On a
positive note though the DT Series appears as if it might have a new life—there
are plans just to meet up, run the DT30 route (no marshals, markers, T shirt
prizes etc) and finish by going to the pub. That
sounds too good to miss to me so I hope to join in. There has also been a
suggestion of a Dark DT Run with head torches but we will see about that.
Lakes in a Day (from Sarah Smith)
7 October 2017
The website for this event proudly says:
50 miles, 4000m ascent - a journey on foot
from the very top of the Lake District at Caldbeck to
the very bottom, at Cartmel, via the stunning Helvellyn Ridge and the western shoreline of Lake
Windermere. It might not be the easiest traverse but it will be the most
spectacular! It will be a day never to
be forgotten.
I can confirm this is all true! Setting off from Caldbeck
in reasonably mild weather, which started to spit then rain then pour whilst
the winds were whipping up, a few hundred souls made their way up Mungrisdale Common towards the summit of Blencathra, from there down to Threlkeld,
then up Clough Head and along the Helvellyn
Ridge. Huddling in the limited and
temporary shelter of the side of Calfhow Pike, some paused to put extra layers on as the weather
deteriorated or enhanced the experience depending on your expectation of this
type of event.
By now the visibility was poor, the rain was
aimed at your face and the winds were, I am told, in the region of 40 or 50
mph. I blindly staggered along the ridge
and down Dollywaggon to Grisedale
Tarn, inched my way up Fairfield and down the other side, by which time the
skies were becoming brighter and clearer.
This glimpse of normality was briefly dangled
before me; on leaving the Ambleside food station, the sky was darkening and the
head torch became necessary soon after.
Then followed many hours and 20 miles of less challenging terrain but
what felt like an endless
journey to the end, Cartmel near Grange
over Sands. I have never felt so
overwhelmed by such extreme relief at the end of an event. It felt as if every single second of this
event had been hard.
This was a well organised event. The RO constructed a temporary bridge across
a river crossing that was potentially hazardous due to the rainfall in the
weeks prior to the event. I will be
entering again, next year, in the hope that better weather accompanies the
spectacular journey; maybe the temporary bridge won't be needed.
