V S Return to Leos (message from Steph)

After discussion with the committee it was felt that our trial at Far Moss was not successful. Since Josh left it has been difficult to access changing facilities, arrange food etc.

Over the last few weeks we have been in discussions with Leo's and they have unanimously agreed for us to return.

As part of the new agreement we will host three races a year from Leo's. The Meanwood Valley Trail, Yorkshire Vets race and the Juniors summer trail race.

We have also agreed to partake in fundraising activities for the club to pay for improvements to the car park, road and pitches.

The contract will start on 19th September with intermediates and advanced based at Leo's from the 19th and juniors/beginners/improvers from the 26th.

Tuesday training and food

19 September - juniors/beginners/improvers 6pm at GSAL, intermediates/advanced 6:45pm at Leos see more details below.

26 September - juniors/beginners/improvers 6pm at Leos, intermediates/advanced 6:45pm at Leos see more details below.

Food will be available to everyone on the 26th. On the menu is lasagne. To order, please email
- [email protected] (for food after the early session)
- [email protected] (for food after the later session)
before 10pm on Sunday 24th, saying whether you want a full portion (£4) or a half portion (£2) and whether you want meat or veggie lasagne.

Coached sessions Tuesday 19 and 26 September (from Myra)

The sessions for advanced and intermediate runners on these dates will be 6:45pm from Leos and will be led by David Lowes.

David is a level 4 coach specialising in endurance events.  He has coached a number of England & GB athletes and regularly writes articles for running magazines, including Athletics Weekly. His PB for a marathon is 2:15.

The sessions are designed to support us in improving our half and full marathon times.  The sessions will be suitable for those who already attend the main Tuesday sessions (advanced and faster intermediates).

There will be a third session later in the year.

On 19 September he will do a short introductory talk. Please get to Leos for 6:45 so we set off running at 7

It sounds like the first session will be to confirm ability and a mixture of warm up, drills, tempo and shorter reps. He's going to adapt the next sessions to cater for individual needs. It will last longer than our normal session.

This is a great opportunity for some more varied and challenging coaching so we urge as many of you to attend as possible, even if you don't normally train with us on a Tuesday.

NB please wear hi-vis and please arrive on time (i.e. 6:45pm)!

West Yorkshire Cross Country League (from Myra)

Here are the dates and venues for the WYXC league:
- Saturday 14th October- Wakefield (Thornes Park)
- Sunday 29th October - Nunroyd Park
- Sunday 19th November - Spenborough
- Saturday 9th December - Keighley.

Please email [email protected] if you'd like to run;.

We have to post the entries so please let us know at the latest by 19th September.

Please check www.valleystriders.org.uk/vsteams.htm  to check that your entry has been read

The series costs £15 (£8 for juniors) so please transfer this to "AC payments", Sort Code 53-70-00, A/c number 72143851, Reference to include your name and "WYXC"

2nd claim members who have 1st claim club outside of West Yorkshire can represent us in these races.

Juniors must be aged 9 or more on 14 October 2017.

We normally do very well in this series so it would be good to make sure we get a good turnout at each race.

Peco Cross Country

Provisional dates are Sundays 26 November, 10 or 17 December, 7 January, 21 January, 11 February.  Nothing to do yet other than put them in your diaries.

2 per cent (from Steph)

There is lots to do in a sports club to ensure it is successful, we have lots of great volunteers on the committee and helping out at races, parkruns etc.

Some of these volunteers would like a break or some help so we are looking for some new helpers. This will be helping out with the social side, communications, training and coaching, race organising and much more. It shouldn't take up too much of your time and the more the better.

If you'd like to volunteer please email [email protected]

And remember, doing your 2% improves your chances of being successful in the London Marathon Ballot.

(for newcomers to Valley Striders, let me explain that a year or so ago we came up with the idea that if we had 50 people involved in some voluntary role within the club, then each would only be doing 2% of the total club workload).

Membership renewals

The new V S year started on 1 September.  There will be information about renewals in the next V S Update.  No need to pay yet!

U13 Boys 80 Metres heats Jack Woodeson 13.56secs, 10th of 12

U11 Boys Long Jump Leon Jones 3.29 metres, 5th of 12, NB event was abandoned after 2 jumps because of heavy rain
U13 Boys Discus Jack Woodeson 12.30metres, 7th of 9

Leeds Country Way

Summary
- Men's team 2nd - runners up to Saltaire
- Ladies team 2nd (and 27th overall) - runners-up to Horsforth
- Vets team 1st (and 7th overall) - ahead of St Theresa's
- "B" (or "D") team 49th overall - unfortunately on leg 3 Paul Sanderson got cramp and was unable to continue, so 49th was an OK result considering the penalty for only having
- there were 54 teams in the race (a record)
- Interesting fact - the 1-2 positions in all categories were an exact reverse of last year
- Fastest leg trophies were won by John Hobbs & Daz Hibberd, Sarah Grant & Rachel Mackie and Hannah Corne & Sarah Graham.

Country Trails Race Series (from Amanda Seims)

These are the final results for the series. You had to run three races to count for prizes but everyone gets a place in the final rankings even if they only ran one race. Becky and Anne got a good place considering they only did 2 events (this should encourage them to do three next year!).

Females
1st Place - Amanda Seims with 296.74 points
Joint 2nd  Rachel Mackie 295.84
Joint 2nd  Sarah Grant 295.84
6. Hannah Corne 220.76
9.
Elaine Craiggs 202.06
16.
Jean Hussey 169.49
35.
Becky Murray 132.88 (two races)
44. Anne Jones 112.04 (two races)
18 females ran at least 3 races (Sarah and Rachel managed to do all four!) and 150 females participated in at least one race.

Males
22.
John Hussey 150.96
112.
Richard Clough 57.75 (one race)
22 males ran all three races and 129 men participated in at least one race so for a change it seems like this navigational challenge series was better attended by females!
