Washburn senior and junior relays (from Amanda Seims)

7pm Friday 14th July.

I have been sent the entry forms if anyone wants to organise teams.

[email protected]

Teams of 3 needed (entry of £7.50 per team payable on the night).

For the seniors, each leg is 3-4 miles on fairly flat trails around Washburn and Fewston reservoir. Juniors run on the trails east of the car park (1.1 mile lap) - see team criteria below.

Early entry needed due to the small capacity of this race (60 teams). Max of 5 senior teams per club and car sharing advised.

Seniors course is only marshaled at road crossings so worth a recce if you don't know the area

Junior course is 1.1 miles and marshaled. Criteria for juniors is as follows:
1. Each team will consist of 4 runners, all aged 8 to 15, who will each do 1 leg
2. Each team will consist of at least 1 girl and 1 boy
3. Each team shall have at least 1 runner aged 8 to 9
4. Each team shall have at least 2 runners aged 8 to 11
5. Each team shall have at least 3 runners aged 8 to 13

Leeds Race Series and Junior Series

Tables for Leeds Race Series and Leeds Junior Race Series have been updated on www.leedsathletics.net.  Note that entries for the Junior Series close 30 June.  There are a number of Valley Striders juniors who have not yet entered but have run many races in the Junior Series!

British Race Walking Championships

On Sunday 25 June, Leeds are hosting a 20km race walk which incorporates the British Athletics, England Athletics, Welsh Athletics & Race Walking Association 20km Championships and the British Athletics 2017 IAAF World Championships 20km Trials.

So if you want to see the best race walkers in Britain (and some from other countries) come along to Roundhay Park.  The main event starts at 09:30 and the fastest walker is expected to finish in just under 90 minutes.

Pen-y-Ghent Fell Race (from Amanda Seims)

Well the warm sunny weather was probably a deciding factor for me to take on the challenge of running up and down one of the Yorkshire three peaks, along with the possibility that there may be some nice cake on sale at Horton Gala.

I was surprised to see that I was a lone Strider in the race (unless you count ex Strider Ali...) which seemed to be dominated by a gaggle of Hyde Park Harriers (seem like that club's been bitten by the fell running bug) but then it was the Wharfedale Half the same day. I'm a much stronger runner in the longer events so it did seem ironic that I'd snubbed that race for a short hilly lung-busting sprint.

We set off and I was immediately elbowed in my shoulder joint by a tall gentleman so spent the first mile on the road wincing a little until the adrenaline kicked in. The route followed the walkers' route up which is mostly runnable/shuffleable paths interspersed with some fun hands on scrambling. Conscious of a lady breathing down my neck I tried to keep shuffling as much as I could to try and put some distance between us but I daren't look back as everyone knows that's the sign you are struggling and therefore an easy target!

It was an incredibly hot day with some great views and in a sadistic way I enjoyed the challenging climb up. At the trig point we crossed the wall to turn right and follow the 3 peaks route for a short distance then it was the choice of 3 routes down to Hull Pot but I made the decision to follow the person in front and take the grassy/boggy route straight down (which it seems is where everyone else went). It was fairly wet and a boggy in parts but not technical and from Hull Pot the route was marked. The sting in the tail was a short ascent up Whitber Hill and then  being able to see the field where we started and thinking we were nearly back, but then being made to do a long stretch on the road to the finish (the route was advertised as 5.5 miles when it was actually around 6.3 so don't start your sprint finish too early!).

Sprinting along the road I was unsure how close the lady I'd tried to lose earlier was so I pushed as hard as I could. It was lovely to see some friendly faces at the end (the usual suspects of Kathy and Ian) and to find out I'd come 4th lady but even better was that my five pound entry fee got me bananas and lots of amazing home made cake! Prize-giving was extensive, with Castleberg Outdoors vouchers for the category winners and then what seemed to be an endless supply of quality spot prizes (and some amusing ways of choosing who they went to such as whoever claimed to be the 'ugliest man').

This was a race I'd definitely recommend, even on the cake alone. Well marshalled, not really much in the way of route finding needed and a good option for those starting out in fell running. I think it's a good contender for the next year's fell champs!

1st Man: Thomas Corrigan from Barlick FR (48:44)

Torshavn marathon (from Jonathan Brownbill)

Result from Torshavn Marathon, Faroe Islands : 04:12:08  gun and chip.   51 overall

Hilly race with a gale to add to the pleasure round the fjord, but, visually the most attractive race in my running decade. If you can deal with the logistics of getting to the Faroe Islands and £10 for fish n chips then it's a run to do.
