RACE REPORTS

Wigan Half Marathon (18 March) from Chris Sawyer

I ran the inaugural Wigan Half Marathon on Sunday 18 March along with 1,816 others.

My gun time was 1:50:36 with a chip time of 1:48:13. Overall position based on gun was 511th. No positions based on chip.

The course was a mixture of road, canal towpath and country park. The race started in the centre of Wigan. The first six miles were on the roads of Wigan and included a lap of the perimeter of the rugby league/football ground, running past Wigan Pier and you were very close to the start at about five miles which was good for spectators. Miles 6 to 8 were along the side of a canal followed by a mile and half climb through a country park - the only significant climb of the race and then the same path back down the hill after a short loop round the top. The final two miles were then principally downhill to finish back in the centre of town.

As well as medal and t-shirt, finishers could gain free admittance to that afternoon's rugby league game between Wigan and Huddersfield by showing their medal at the ticket office.  The race was well marshalled and I would recommend it to those who want to venture over the Pennines for a Spring half marathon. According to the results I was the only Valley Strider present.

Edale Skyline (25 March) from Anthony Fryer

Just a quick update

I ran the Edale Skyline last Sunday and was lucky enough to get glorious sunshine for it. This was a stark contrast to my recce which brought blizzards and snowstorms.

This year was a new route to add more climb with an extra descent and ascent near Winn hill and a checkpoint taken out near the end to keep the distance similar.

Came home 83rd in 3 hours 54 mins. Happy I got under 4 hours but my eating was a bit rubbish and was running in fairly new shoes which ended up blistering me before the half way mark, making the last half a bit slower than I would have liked.

So like my school reports, good enough but could do better.

Maverick Buff X Yorkshire Dales trail race (25 March) from Amanda Seims

Last weekend (25th) I did the Maverick Buff X Yorkshire Dales trail race medium course in Malham which was 14 miles and took in the climb up and over Malham Cove - I came 2nd lady (no prize as that was only for 1st m and f).

1st lady - Elyse Paulson (2:08:58)      2nd overall
2nd - Amanda Seims (2:21:44)           5th overall
3rd lady -  Hope Bicknell (2:26:08)
Last lady in at 4:51:59
26 ladies ran

1st male - Jonathan White (2:08:28)
Last man in at 4:14:51
38 men ran

Dales Trail (2 April) from Kim Spence

More results from the weekend at the Dales Trail Series (20km) - 1st trail race in a series with the 30km in July and 40km in September.

43rd Graham Jones 1.52.20
51st Kim Spence 1.53.28
67th Amanda Seims 1.58.44
100th Sam Harris 2.09.46
139th John Hussey 2.18.55 and 1st in the MV60 category!!

Ben Livesey was the first male to cross the finish line with a new course record of 1.20.37 and 1st female was Elaine Bisson in a time of 1.47.50 although thankfully she didn't break my course record from 2015 (1.44.10).

Great day with mixed weather where it was glorious hot sunshine for the first half followed by rain with some thunder and lightning!
