Valley Striders Club Barbecue - Saturday 6 August

First of all, please save this date in your diaries!

Dan Murray has posted in Facebook (24 June)

Hi All, we will shortly be promoting the Valley Striders Summer BBQ to be held this year on Saturday the 6th August. Becky Murray as the VSCC social secretary will be promoting the event through the cycling club and we're looking for someone to do the same for the runners.

The role will involve setting up the event on FB, compiling a list of names from those who have placed a booking through the email address which we'll give out and then assisting with collecting the monies in. Simple!

Anyone feel up to the challenge? You'll work closely with Becky Murray so there'll be plenty of help at hand but you need to be proactive to keep generating interest so we can get the ticket sales up.

Let me know please.

No replies to this post so far, please message Dan if you can help.

NB re "collecting the monies", most payments will go through the V S Payments account so you won't be handling vast amounts of cash.

Race Diary

Note that the Hyde Park Mile and the Eccup 10 are now full.

Danefield Relay on Tuesday 5 July http://www.fellandale.com/new-page/

Canal Race 5k and junior race from Methley http://rothwellharriers.org.uk/canal-run/

The Club Summer Handicap and Junior 1 Mile races will be on Tuesday 12 July.  All races start by Eccup Reservoir, juniors from 6:10pm and seniors from 6:55pm.

Golden Acre Relay is on Wednesday 13 July, teams of 3, approx. 2.75 miles each.  Please make up your own teams (and choose a suitable name including either "Valley" or "Striders").  If you are 2 and need 1 more for a team or are 1 and need 2 more, post on Facebook.

Leeds Country Way is on Sunday 4 September.  Myra requested names in by 4 July so that pairings and allocation to legs can be done in plenty of time - this is critical as if people go on holiday for 2 (or more) weeks it becomes difficult to organise recces.  So far the response has been disappointing - only 22 - so 38 short of our usual 5 teams and 52 short of our most ever 6 teams.

Terry Kelly bio (from Bob)

I'll include a more detailed "bio" in next week's V S Update, but in brief
- Terry was a serious cyclist in his early days and also a runner
- I believe he had had a serious back injury when cycling, which caused a slightly contorted running style that could be spotted from afar.
- I first met him when he joined Burton's Running Club.  I worked at Burtons but had already joined VS before Burtons RC was started.
- After Burtons RC folded, he ran unattached for a while and then joined Valley Striders in 2011
- In the late 90's, Max Jones was setting world age-group records for 50 miles and 100km, and both of them went to run Comrades "Marathon" in South Africa (I put it in quotes as it is 56 miles!)
- Terry's 4 runs make impressive reading
- 1999, aged 69, ran 9:33:14 and finished 8th in the M65-69 category
- 2000, aged 70, ran 10:18:31
- 2002, aged 72, ran 10:53:43
- 2003, aged 73, ran 11:13:49
- NB in 2001 his result shows a DNF, but it may be that he exceeded the time limit, in those days the time limit was 11 hours, it was then extended to 12.

Pudsey 10k

Report in Bradford Telegraph & Argus:

http://www.thetelegraphandargus.co.uk/sport/14573758.Running_log__Debele_unfazed_by_tough_Pudsey_course/

TESFAYE Debele of Leeds City won the PUDSEY 10K in 35min 26sec.

The tough course included an opening two kilometres on the road before five kilometres of tracks and muddy paths through Fulneck valley, before a steep climb back into Pudsey for a final two miles on the road.

John Hobbs (Valley Striders) did well to stay close to Debele, finishing 50 yards behind.

Matt Lockyer (Pudsey & Bramley) was a minute adrift, while Daryl Hibberd (Valley) and Will Kerr went head to head a distance beyond the pack and finished together on 36:28.

A total of 476 athletes finished Sunday's event, which was organised by Pudsey Pacers.

English Aquathlon Championships - from Howard Jeffrey

Today (11th June) I competed in the English national age group aquathlon championships. What the heck's that I hear you ask. Last year I did not know myself but discovered when I entered the Leeds sprint triathlon scheduled for Sunday 12th that it was on for today. 750 metre open water swim in Roundhay park lake which I have done a couple of times in other events and then 5K run, along effectively the Roundhay parkrun course but in reverse. Mass start at 12.30 for the men with the women 5 minutes after. The water was a balmy 18 degrees and was wearing my original Zoot suit (not the gangster type, google it but the wetsuit) because I have not had breathless experiences in it to date. None the less I let the others pull away for a few seconds before I got into a rhythm which was quick by my standards but relatively slow by national aquathlon standards. No bad experiences and I came out of the water near the back of the men's wave but just in front of the first lady. There was quite a long drag up to the transition which allowed me to remove most of the suit and get warmed up for the run. Any-one that knows Roundhay will appreciate that it is a hilly and challenging course but I know it well and knew where it would suit me. That was around the little lake and down the carriage drive where I can get a head of steam downhill. I was breathing heavily coming into transition but by the time I got my running shoes on I was good to go. On the first lap of two I passed two of the age group rivals and on lap two another three and had a pretty good run in to the finish. The 5K took 22 minutes or so which at Roundhay park is OK. The results are up live and I had managed third so picked up a bronze medal which was the best I could have hoped for as the two in front were three minutes faster in the water.

As for the sprint tomorrow, I withdrew because, without going into detail, I was not happy with the logistics of the finish. I feared hanging around exhausted in the cold and damp which would not have been good for my troublesome chest and I have the European aquathlon championships in France in a fortnight. I am still a runner though, because next week is the Wakefield half marathon.
