V S Update - 17 April 2016

- Training on 19 April and 26 April
- MVT Junior Races Tuesday 14 June
- Yorkshire Vets Race Tuesday 21 June
- Race calendar
- Striders men 44th at National 12 stage relay
- Results from Manchester, Sheffield, Sahara

Training on Tuesday 19 April

We'll all be at Leos as is usual for the 3rd Tuesday in the month.
- All fully paid-up junior members are invited to the 6pm session (check on www.valleystriders.org.uk/vsmemreg.htm for payment status).
- Beginners/improvers at 6pm may be in a separate group
- Intermediates should join the experienced runners for 5 by 6 mins at Eccup but run up the Avenue rather than across the fields
- As this is being sent out after 10pm, you're officially too late to order food (I'll say no more)

Training on Tuesday 26 April

Juniors and beginners/improvers may be at Grammar School at Leeds, please check the front page of our website nearer the date

Meanwood Valley Trail Junior Races on Tuesday 14 June and Vets Race on Tuesday 21 June

Both events are now likely to be ON, but we still need a few more marshals.

Paul Jones, who is on the committee for the junior race, has come with a fine suggestion.

Paul observed that the "problem" with the junior race is that it is difficult for parents to marshal as they can't stand away from Leos (e.g. at Stairfoot Lane or Adel Crag) if they need to look after their child and get them ready to run.  And the "problem" with the vets race is that a number of Striders will want to run the race.

Paul suggested that if veteran Striders (age 33+) volunteered to marshal the junior race they should be given priority to run in the vets race.  And Paul requested that parents of juniors who are unable to marshal the junior race due to child care should volunteer to marshal the vets race (and perhaps bring their children to help (NB will finish by 8:30pm)).

Just to summarise the proposals for the events (both of which are based at Leos)

The junior races are proposed to start at 18:45 with a 1 mile race for school years 3-4, followed by races for years 5-6 (1 mile), 7-8 (2 miles) and 9-12 (2 miles).  For course map see http://valleystriders.org.uk/Meanwood%20Junior%20Map%202016.png

The vets race will start at 19:30, this is a 2-lap course around Adel Woods, Buckstone Moor and the Meanwood Valley Trail, totalling approximately 4.5 miles.  For course map see http://valleystriders.org.uk/Yorks_vets_2016.jpg

If you are likely to be available to help on one or both of these dates please email [email protected] immediately!  NB we realise this is a long way in advance to commit, and so will understand if a few have to give back word nearer the date.  Check names at www.valleystriders.org.uk/vsmarshals.htm .

Race Calendar

Please see www.valleystriders.org.uk/vsdates.htm for dates for V S Grand Prix, VS Fell Championships and other races.

Note that several races are selling fast, e.g. John Carr 5k at Esholt and the Hyde Park mile.  A race that sold out within a few days last year - the Vale of York Half - goes on sale at www.racebest.com next Sunday.

The parkrun mobrun - a challenge to local clubs to get the most runners - will be at Bramley on Saturday 14 May, and, as an incentive to get a lot of V S runners there, will be part of the V S Grand Prix.

The V S junior mile and Club spring handicap will be on Tuesday 24 May, put this date in your diary!

V S Grand Prix and V S Fell Championship results and tables are up-to-date on the V S website  www.valleystriders.org.uk/vsclubch.htm

Highgate Harriers' winning time was 4:16:30, and they were followed by Aldershot Farnham & District and Bristol & West.  First northern club was Liverpool Harriers (4th), first Yorkshire club was Leeds City (a disappointing 16th)  The only other Yorkshire clubs to finish ahead of V S were 3 from South Yorks (Rotherham, Hallamshire and Sheffield AC).

So a big WELL DONE to the team and a big THANK YOU to Paul Fotherby who organised the teams and transport.  Finally we shouldn't forget Ian Sanderson, Paul Smith and Jeremy Ladyman who were part of the team at Sunderland and helped V S qualify for the national final.

John was 4 seconds faster than at Brass Monkey and Andy 3 seconds faster which indicates that some serious training has been going on as Sheffield is a much tougher course!

Marathon des Sables

Richard Adcock finished 367th overall.  There were 917 finishers and 112 did not finish.

West Yorkshire Track and Field

There were "heat" wins for Alvie and Tally and some other high places for the V S junior squad.  Results aren't available yet, but I'm assuming they'll appear on www.westyorkshireathletics.org.uk soon.
