congestion in the junior race.
Congratulations

junior race!

Thanks to
Kathy Kaiser, Ken Kaiser, John Umpleby, Mike Crosfill, Eileen Crosfill, Tally
Diamond, Joshua Birkin and Pat Umpleby for marshalling and recording. And
particular thanks to Liz Reddington who managed to get all of the 50 runners
off on time. (We had 3 DNFs, hope you are OK, Brian, Joe and Paul).
There
were 5 new runners with no “form” in the computer for whom we had to estimate
their handicaps, for 4 of them either my ready-reckoner was wrong or they
submitted pessimistic times as they finished in the top 10. The 5th
was Sean and Myra ensured he had a tough handicap.
So as has
been the custom for the last few years, these new runners aren’t allowed to
claim the trophy, so congratulations to David Howe, one of Ken and Kathy’s
group. Also congratulations to Dan Fisher for fastest time of the night.
Regarding
the Trophy, some of you will be aware that it has been missing since
December. I’m very pleased (and very relieved) to report that it was
returned in time for the race (and just to let you know it wasn’t at my house,
John’s house or Leos), so we were able to present it to David.
When it
has been engraved we are arranging a photo shoot for the 4 winners this year
with the Trophy.
Leeds Triathlon – Sunday
13th September – Roundhay Park (report from Mike Furby)
Valley striders
Triathlon Club showed our presence again on the local scene at the Leeds
Triathlon with 13 (+2) members racing in both the Sprint and Standard distance
events across a wide range of categories.
The start
of the day was overcast and a little chilly, with the ground wet from the
previous day’s downpour. Good news was that the roads were dry and there was
only small southerly breeze to help us on the 1st half of the bike.
The
various categories were split into waves of about 50 people and each wave set
off at 10 minute intervals. The Standard Distance event kicked off first with a
1500m swim in Waterloo lake comprising 2 laps.
The swim
over and a fairly long run up to transition to collect bikes for the 27 mile
ride out to Walshford on the very fast Wetherby Road route and back again on
the undulating and tough East Keswick-Wike road back to Roundhay Park. Great to
see plenty of Striders during the race and some good team motivation going on
especially between myself, Dan Price, Howard King and Mark Metcalf at one point
as we were all within a few yards of each other. Later on through East Keswick
as I caught Liz Ball, I saw she was waving and then I saw why, yes it was the
VSCC Sunday Social coming the other way – Go Striders!
Finally
back into the park, rack the bike and out for the 3 lap, 9km run in the park
grounds including 3x ascent of Hill60 (ouch). The sprint distance event covered
much the same course with a single lap swim of 750m, a shortened bike lap,
turning towards East Keswick at Collingham and a shorter run of 2 laps.
What was
clear at the end as we gathered for a post-race chat was that we’d done well
overall, stories and age group wins and overall high placings began to emerge.
Indeed for the standard distance event 6 of our men finished in the top 35 with
Ben Hall taking 11th place overall and 1st place in the 30-34 age group. For
the ladies we had 2 in the top 10 with Michaela Laxton in 5th overall and also
winning the 30-34 age group. For the sprint distance even more success with Liz
Ball winning her age category and result of the day going to Anna Hobbs with
her 2nd place lady overall. Valley Striders finished as 2nd team overall, just
pipped to the win and so still a very good result and a sign of things to come.
Quick mention for John who completed the fastest 9km walk I’ve ever seen and
crossing the line further bolstering our overall result. Good work team!

30 years ago (from Terry

SEPTEMBER
15 1985....I hope current members will take inspiration from this race result
30 years ago today. HUMBER MARATHON, we finished 4 in the first 12. MARTYN
HOPSON 8TH 2.27.04 STEVE O'CALLAGHAN 9TH 2.27.15, TERRY BEAN 10TH 2.27.32 and
TERRY LONERGAN 11TH 2.30.41. With just one team prize and prizes for the first
6 we came away with nothing. But a memorable day for the club
nonetheless....just one of many.
Massage Offer
As the Autumn marathon season is
approaching, I'm offering 10% off massages for all VS members throughout
October. You can have 45 mins for £28 or 60 mins for £36. Perfect for pre- or
post-race, although you don't have to be doing a race (of any distance) to get
this offer! I'm away until 28th September, but get in touch and I'll
reply to you once I get back. The slots got booked up quite quickly when I did
this in April, so don't miss out. Me and my pointy elbows look forward to
ironing out those knots. More details at www.downdogdays.com, please get in touch if you have any other
questions.
Water Story (from this week’s VSCC email)
Our very
own Neil Holloway made the national cycling press this week with a story given
to him by someone (who will remain unnamed) – although road.cc accredited it to
Neil anyway. As the story goes, a woman in Huby (on the way to Almscliffe Crag)
wanted to charge a rider £3 to fill up his water bottle, and actually
tipped out the water when he only had £1 on him. Amazing what people will do.
Here’s the full story.
