Saturday 15 August – Roundhay parkrun

Alex, Joel and team are ready for the VS takeover of Roundhay parkrun this Saturday.  Thank you to everyone who has volunteered (I think there are about 25 of you).

We’ve got 10 pacers now we need plenty of racers (of any pace) so come along and run, and, if you’re not shy, wear your VS vest.

See you Saturday!

Bob

English National Fell relays – Saturday 17 October (from John Marsham)

Saturday 17th October 2015 at 10:30am. Barley, Near Burnley. The competition area takes in the massif of Pendle Hill, which hosts a number of very popular and challenging short, medium and long fell races. The event will follow the usual format of 4 legs run in succession. Leg 1 will be a solo leg of approx 7K with 450m of ascent (winning time 30 minutes approx). Leg 2 is a pairs leg of 15k with 630m of climb (winning time 75 minutes). Leg 3 is a pairs navigation leg that we believe will give competitors a choice of routes depending on their perceived running strengths (estimate of winning time: 70 minutes). The solo final leg is 8K with 400m of ascent (winning time 35 mins approx).

Please email me J.Marsham@leeds.ac.uk and/or respond to the event that Simon Vallance has created on Facebook if you are interested in being part of a team.

Harewood Trail Races and Junior Race – Sunday 8 November

If you’re available to help on the day, please email help@valleystriders.org.uk

If you can (also) help before the day with flyers (handing out at races and/or putting on car windscreens and/or taking to schools, gyms, running shops etc), please mention this when you email the “help” account as we will soon be publishing a list of races and places and need names for each.

Thank you!

Race Report - Round Hill (from John Marsham)

Six Striders at this race that counts in the Grand Prix, the Fell Champs and the Leeds Race Series. I’d not been for a few years and have to say it was a fun race. Almost perfect running weather and a fell race where you don’t have to carry anything, and can run every step of the way (I think I walked about 10 yards, I think Ross didn’t). The route is marked and always on a path of some kind so it's pretty much a trail race, definitely a good first fell race if you have not done one before. The crowd is fairly local, with many staying to enjoy the tea and sandwiches in the sun after. Personally, I had no real expectation of a time in this race, but I was at least one minute faster than 4 years ago. Ross was predictably first Strider finishing 7th and I expect several of the Striders women would have been in the prizes if they’d run.

Results from Ross:

1. Lee Athersmith, Wharfedale Harriers, 55.35

7. Ross Bibby, Valley Striders, 1.00.33

21. John Marsham, Valley Striders, 1.06.16

29. Rachel Pilling, Pudsey & Bramley, 1.08.49 (1st female)

40. Paul Smith, Valley Striders, 1.11.30

48. Martin Oddy, Valley Striders, 1.13.20

63. Jason Praill, Valley Striders, 1.17.08

64. Graham Pawley, Valley Striders, 1.17.17

(129 finishers)
