Subject:                          V S Update - Tue 21 Jul at GSAL; Juniors parkruns; LCW final reminder; Results/reports from junior 1 mile, club handicap, Pool, Settle, Lyke Wake, Paddy Buckley and Italy

Sent: 18 July 2015 14:41

Next Tuesday (21 July)

By democratic vote immediately after the club handicap, we decided

·         Juniors/Beginners/Improvers will meet 6pm at Grammar School at Leeds (if you’ve not been before, see website for links to maps)

·         Intermediates/Experienced runners will meet 7pm Leos probably for 5 * 6 mins at Eccup Res

Reminder that the following night the Golden Acre Relays take place at … Golden Acre Park, see www.abbeyrunners.co.uk/golden-acre-relay/ for details

We’ll be back to normal for Tuesday sessions on 28 July and through August, so yes, senior runners will have to do the hills on 28 July, and there will be food on 4 August.

Junior Runners parkrun Reminder

We’ll be updating our junior results page with recent parkruns and junior parkruns in about a week’s time, so if you’re not registered on parkrun as a Valley Strider, please do so as soon as possible – we won’t be able to spot your results if you don’t.  It’s easy to do, just wait for your weekly email and there is an option to edit your details. Then click on “update” and there is a drop-down box where you can select “Valley Striders A C”.

Applies to adults too!

Leeds Country Way Final Reminder

Just to remind you that the cut-off for putting your name forward for the Leeds Country Way Relay is Sunday 26 July, and we intend to select teams on 28 July to allow 5 weeks to arrange recce runs.

If you’d like to run please email teams@valleystriders.org.uk . To check if you’re on the list please see www.valleystriders.org.uk/vsteams.htm

We’ve had 6 teams of 12 for the last 2 years and are aiming for the same again so it is disappointing that we have “only” 39 names so far.

We really will accept runners of any pace for our “E” and “F” teams, you just need to be able to run 10 miles at your own steady pace (and even walk any steep uphills).  The race route is generally scenic and on good footpaths.  Each leg has, at most, a couple of miles of road and you may have a small housing estate or two to pass through.  Please sign up and you’ll see parts of Leeds you never knew existed in a really well organised event. I hope I’ve persuaded you!

This event was the final race in the V S Junior Grand Prix for 2014/5 which ends 31 August, but points can still be scored in the “Fastest parkrun” and “Fastest junior parkrun” categories. Points have been updated on the website – these can be found by clicking on “Juniors” link in the top bar of the home page.  Note that we are a couple of months behind with the parkrun results.  If you’ve not registered as a Strider for parkrun and you do so now, we will pick up historical results and include them in our calculations.

Senior 5-and-a-bit mile handicap

Thanks to Graham F, Kevin, Pat, John W, John U, Ben, Graham J, Ken, Kathy, Mike and Eileen for their support.

As it was Ann’s first race and her handicap was using her estimated time, the official winner was Jo Chambers.

The Grand Prix points table has been updated on the website.  John Hobbs has a huge lead in the men’s championship, he already has a maximum of 800 points he didn’t “need” the 100 pts for fastest time in the handicap, but by doing so ensured no-one else scored the 100.  All the other categories are open for grabs and there are still about 10 races to go.

Pool Gala Race

Having recovered from his 56 mile epic Comrades Marathon, James Tarran won this 5k race round the fields, his first ever race win (at the age of 48 and three-quarters, he proudly posted on Facebook)

Settle Hills (from Steve Dixon)

Sunday 21 June  - 7 miles and 1750 ft of ascent

The race is well organised by  Settle Harriers with plenty of free parking, toilet facilities and showers at North Ribblesdale Rugby Club.

The start is from the town square and immediately climbs steeply uphill through the town and onto equally steep tracks until you eventually reach the high fells above Attermire Scar. The views are magnificent but can't be fully appreciated owing to the tussocks and rocks underfoot!

Steve, Ross and Mick were fighting it out at the front but Steve was able to reel in the other two on the long climb at the start and was not to be caught after that. Steve continued to take the overall M50 prize. All 3 finished in under an hour! Tom and myself finished 10 mins later with Malcolm hot on our heels to, as always, take the M70 prize.

A future fell running star made her debut as a spectator at this event - Lula Button with her mum Holly to support Dad.

Lots of cakes and soup on offer afterwards and beer for those quick enough. Tom could only watch aghast though as the shutters came down as he approached the bar for that well earned pint!

Although the race involves a steep tricky descent the route is so well marshalled and taped that I would recommend this race to anyone wanting to try a fell run but is put off by the navigation that's often necessary in other races

92 ran and just one DNF

Fell Championship (from Steve Webb)

The VSFC table has been updated to include Settle Hills where there were good points on offer: Messrs Webb, Bibby and Loftus in particular all made hay to keep things very tight at the top of the table.  Steve and Malcolm will have to make a return trip to Settle to spend the vouchers at Castleberg Sports awarded as V50 and V70 winners.  Steve was also first Vet at the new Blackfell race at Kettlewell.  This is run over Great Whernside and is like a combination of the FRA relay navigational leg from a few years ago and the Wharfedale Triple T race.  Heartily recommended for next year.  Anybody got other results to report to me?

Lyke Wake Race 2015

42 miles from Osmotherley to Ravenscar, across the North York Moors.

=1 Jamie Hauxwell & Andrew Minister 6h 10m

5 Shelli Gordon   6h 29m first female

32  Sarah Smith  8h 28m

101 started, 89 finished

Paddy Buckley

I had to check this on Wikipedia, and it says it is a circuit of 100km taking in 47 summits in Snowdonia – the Welsh equivalent of the Bob Graham Round.

John Marsham emailed

Just to say I got around in 27 hours 31 minutes 43 seconds on 26/27 June. Slower than planned, but still a round. Thanks to my fantastic support team (Chris Jones, Mick Loftus, Dave McGuire, Sue Haworth and Ann Marsham) and those who would have run if I’d postponed to the next w/e because of weather. Full report later.

Maratona Dles Dolomites (from Martin Hepworth)

Four of us, Richard Styrin, Guy Meynell, Mark Bradford and me, completed this on Sunday as part of a 5 day trip.

Two of us ended up on the medium course (66 miles, 9500 feet of climbing) due to a cut off time we were unaware of. The other two completed the long route including the mighty Giau which I was not sad to miss (85 miles, 14500 climbing).

The event is entered via lottery but we bought a package including accommodation to guarantee we all got in. Flight to Venice with 3 hour transfer. We stayed in La Villa where it starts. Corvara where it finishes would also work.

The temperature was unusually high, peaking at 35 degrees. This, along with the fact you are either going up or down all day made it hard. That said the short 55km route, built into a cycling holiday, would have been a pleasure. It's the mountains so anything can happen on the weather front. You can choose the course whilst out on the road which is nice.

This is without doubt the biggest and best sportive I have ever done. 12000 people, closed roads, TV cameras, amazing atmosphere and organisation. Goody bag included a Castelli shirt and gilet and loads of other bits.

Next time, personally, I would do the short route. That way you could ride more on the other days. You could also throw in some MTB if so desired as there is loads of that around too.

You can't train very effectively over here for those hills they are just too big. The longest climb is 12.5 km at circa 7%. The Giau is a touch steeper that East Chevin, does not relent, and is 10 km long. Pace is key. I am an average B rider and rode this event at circa 10mph. Our faster boys I believe managed 11 or 12. The winners are pretty much pro level managing around 20 mph so you will find competition at whatever level you ride if so desired.

Anyone who likes a challenge and "enjoys" hills should have this on the bucket list. It's in the same category as The Marmotte and Etape Du Tour I reckon.  See www.maratona.it/en/
