Harewood Trail Races
– October 19th – message from the Chief Marshal
So far we have about
half the marshals that we need, so thanks to everyone who has done so far
(check your name at http://valleystriders.org.uk/Harewood%202014%20-%20Marshals%20List.xls ) but we
do need a lot more of you and it would be helpful to us if you could let us
know before 16 September if possible.
I’ve been asked to
explain a bit more about how we’re organising things this year. Not really big
changes, just a little tidying around the edges. In years gone by a huge email
has been sent out from Marshal HQ not long before the race and a number of
people have noted that this was very confusing (me being one). It also puts a
huge amount of work on one person trying to organise up to 100
marshals/volunteers.
So this year we are
dividing the event into about 8 manageable sections (from HQ set up to race
marshalling) with section leaders who will be responsible for letting people
know who is in their team and ensuring they are well briefed and know what they
are doing. Those section leaders will also be in charge of filling any
gaps if people have to drop out (illness, injury, etc) late.
So it may be that a
few volunteers initially end up on a reserves list to cover this, but
experience shows you will all be needed.
Anyway, smaller teams
= easier organisation = less stress! That’s the plan
On which subject we
are having a meeting at Leos after training next Tuesday (16th) to
allocate volunteers/marshals. We know that everyone is volunteering their time
so we will do our absolute best top take account of any special requests .
We are still however
a little short of section leaders so if you are available to help out in that
role and can attend the meeting please let us know.
Or if you haven’t
volunteered yet but want to, please also let us know (you just don’t need to be
at the meeting)
Email address as
always is [email protected]
Cheers
John
West Yorks Cross
Country – from Bob
We’ve now received
the dates of the 4 West Yorks Cross Country (WYXC) races, and unfortunately one
of them clashes with the Harewood Trail Races. This is very annoying as we had
asked the race organiser about dates in October and he’d replied that he
wouldn’t be holding an event on the weekend of 18th/19th
October.
Dates
·
Sunday 19 October at Thornes Park Wakefield
·
Sunday 2 November somewhere in Leeds
·
Saturday 22 November somewhere in Keighley
·
Sunday 7 December at Nunroyd Park Guiseley
We’ve discussed this
at V S Committee and we are in agreement that the Harewood Trail takes higher
priority. We cannot be in a position where we have insufficient marshals.
So, if you want to
enter WYXC this season, email [email protected] to say you want to
run WYXC, but in your email you must state your availability for Harewood on 19
October. We will expect you to be available, so if you’re not, please
explain why! (e.g. it might be that you’re away that weekend and not
intending to run the first WYXC)
What we will do is
position marshals who want to run WYXC in the optimum places that gives them
the best chance of getting away early and getting to Wakefield in time.
Our team captains, Gwil and Myra, will be involved in this process, so that the
best possible VS team is selected.
NB Google maps says
to get to Thornes Park from either Eccup or Harewood is around 19 miles, 36
mins without traffic, both routes via centre of Leeds. It is likely to
take a little longer as the road from the M1 Jct40 into Wakefield is always
busy. The ladies race starts at 13:45 and the mens at 14:15. So,
unless you’re on the finish line or doing the results, we should be able to get
you there on time, albeit possibly in a rush!
Hopefully there will
be an excess of marshals, and everyone who wants to run will be able to get
there in plenty of time.
It would help if you
emailed before Tuesday 16 September as the meeting to plan marshalling
positions is that evening.
NB fees are £12 for
adults, £6 for juniors, this is the rate for the series not the rate per race!

Questions and Answers
Q1. Why is the rate for new running
members more expensive than for renewals – surely we are trying to encourage
new members?!
A1. Our running membership fees
include affiliation with England Athletics. The EA year is out of line
with the VS year. For new members we need to pay EA £10 now and a further
£12 in April 2015. But for our renewals, we’ve already paid the £10, so
we only need to pay the £12 in April 2015. So effectively the £30 is at a
discount!
Q2. Why is our junior rate the same
as adult – surely we are trying to encourage juniors?
A2. For adult runners we pay £7.50
to Leos. Last year, for juniors we paid £2.50 to Leos. The Leos
facilities of playing fields and floodlights are essential to our junior
training sessions, hence we felt the need to support Leos more and we have
decided to pay £7.50 per junior too. Hence the increase from £10.
NB the junior rate is very competitive with most clubs where there is a £1 per
week fee as well as an annual fee.
