Leeds Country Way 31
August – Desperate Measures
Over the
last 3 weeks, 11 people who originally signed up for LCW have dropped out for
various reasons, plus several reserves have declared themselves unavailable,
At the
time of writing, we definitely have one vacancy, are waiting for a reply from
someone else, and have a third who injured their knee on Thursday and hope
they’ll be OK by next Sunday.
So
firstly can I ask the 69 still confirmed to run not to partake of any dangerous
activities in the next 7 days.
And
secondly can I ask the other 200+ Striders (including cyclists!) to let me know
if you are free next Sunday (31 August) and in a state that you can manage
approximately 10 miles, whatever the pace.
Please
email [email protected] Thank
you!

Harewood Trail Races –
Sunday Oct 19th - message from John Wallace
Hi guys
Well, as Alex said
last week the entries are starting to roll in so now we’re chasing for some
marshals!
We need upwards of
100 volunteers all told to carry out a range of tasks, whether early morning
set up of HQ and the finish area, car park attendants, dealing with entries,
finish line recording or being marshals and cheering people on whilst showing
them the way
There’s a lot going
on and it’s our way of putting something back in for all those races and events
we’ve taken part in and raising some money for charity to boot. It’s a couple
of hours’ time and I’d venture to say most people enjoy it.
This year, for 1
years only, the headline race is only 8 miles so it’s a chance to work on a
really unique occasion.
It’s just 2-3 hours
of time so please volunteer by emailing [email protected]
Thanks a lot.

Race Diary
Lots of local races
in September, including
Ilkley Incline –
Wednesday 3 September at 7pm
They say “We hope to
provide another gruelling/enjoyable evening (with twenty two individual
prizes) and maybe getting somewhere near last year's bumper turn out (at 108 up
about 20% on the previous best). The entry fee has stayed at £1 50p since
the race started 13 years ago”.
Accurately measured 1
mile uphill race climbing 560 feet on road and track. The start is at the foot
of Keighley Road at the junction with Wells Road in Ilkley (GR SE 114469).

Marshalling for other events
Yorkshire Marathon –
12 October - message from Holly Williams Button
Jane
Tomlinson are looking for senior marshals for the marathon (12th October), it's
a paid position with responsibility for a group of volunteers either on
baggage/water stations/goody bags etc.
Email [email protected] if
you're interested. If there is a group of Striders from Leeds they could share
cars.
Brownlee Triathlon –
21 September – message from WY Sport
Helen Galashan at
West Yorkshire Sport has emailed us to ask for volunteers at the Brownlee
Triathlon at Harewood House. Their charity is Macmillan Cancer Support.
Rather than repeat
the detail, it is on the WY Sport website http://www.wysport.co.uk/know/jobs-and-vacancies/macmillan-brownlee-tri-volunteers-2014/
Race Results
Two wins in two weeks
for VS ladies at Templenewsam parkrun – Alex Watson-Usher on 16 August and
Louise Cazan on 23 August. Coincidentally they will run the anchor leg
for VS women’s team at LCW next Sunday! Also a win for Tally Diamond,
first girl at junior parkrun on 24 August.
Note in future, we’re
going to have to be more specific when we say “junior parkrun” as there will be
a junior parkrun at Templenewsam from 28 September.
Sedbergh Hills Race
Report – from Steve Dixon
Sedbergh Hills Fell
Race, Sunday 17 August.
AL 14.5 miles and
2000 metres of climbing.
English Fell Running
Championships
This race gets better
each time you do it. It's an absolute gem amongst the bejewelled hills of the
Howgills in the eastern side of Cumbria.
The weather always
adds interest, particularly this year with heavy showers and gale force winds.
Wind chill meant freezing temperatures on the higher tops. This may have been a
factor in why so many of the 400 entrants didn't make it to the start line.
Many of the checkpoints were on exposed tops or in valley bottoms acting as
wind funnels. These were all manned heroically by cheery supportive marshals
ensuring we all made it back to the safety of Sedbergh.
Winder top was the
last checkpoint towering above the town. It is a steep and ferocious descent
for tired legs and many had falls and tumbles in their dash to the finish. Kim
was leading the Valley Striders dash for home and was one of the fallen but
still made it to the finish in under 3 hours. Unfortunately the fall was
awkward and a twisted knee may keep her out of running shoes for some weeks. I
wish her a speedy recovery.
