Yorkshire Vets Race –
Tuesday 24 June
Thank
you! 40 Striders have stepped forward and we now have course-set-uppers,
marshals, team leaders, start & finish team, race director, car-parkers,
sandwich-makers etc. And 3 spare marshals who will be able to run if
everyone else turns up.
If you’ve
been unsure whether you’re free but now are free (e.g. England v Costa Rica
doesn’t figure quite so high on your priorities), then come along Tuesday
6:45pm and either run or marshal in place of someone who does want to run.
NB, sorry,
no normal training sessions on 24 June.
Training, pie and peas and
physio visit – Tuesday 1 July
If it’s
the first Tuesday of the month, it must be food at Leos.
Time for
pie and peas, two sittings, 7:15pm and 8:30pm. Choose meat or veggie pie
(£3.50, the price has gone up 50p), mushy peas or baked beans, and whether you
want apple pie (£1.50).
Book to earlyfood@valleystriders.org.uk or food@valleystriders.org.uk as
appropriate. You can cancel before 10pm Sunday 29th without penalty.
Holly has
invited physio Jamie Sawiuk to come to Leos that evening, she’ll be there from
6pm, and will do pre-session physio for the 7pm groups, post-session physio for
the 6pm groups and then post session physio for the 7pm groups
She says
·
Anyone that is thinking of seeing me , it would
be helpful if they think about what makes them worse, what makes them better
and whether they have a 24 hour pattern to their pain.
·
I’m going to keep it individualised and relaxed and I'm hoping
people will be comfortable to ask anything they need to
·
I was going to keep it informal, could people get in touch with
Holly or myself and then we can get an idea of how much interest there is (and
maybe book slots if a lot of interest).

Valley Striders Summer TDF
Party and BBQ – Friday 11 July – Hosted by the Cycling Section
Dan Murray
emailed
We are
holding a summer party at Leos on Friday 11th July 2014 open to all
members of Valley Striders with partners and kids. It will be a Tour De France
themed evening and Tony is preparing a special ‘Le Tour BBQ’ which we can enjoy
whilst watching all the action from that day’s Tour De France stage on the big
screen. Costs are £10 per adult and £5 per child. Please confirm your booking
by no later than Saturday 5th July confirming orders to mail@danmurray.co.uk and stating carnivore or vegetarian.

to be made in advance of the evening by sending a cheque made payable to Valley
Striders to John Shanks at 11 Sunnybank Road, Horsforth, Leeds, LS18 4NB. Alternatively,
transfer your cash to the VS account Sort Code: 53-70-00 Account Number:
01168509 but please include your name on the transfer reference and
include the word ‘BBQ’.
There
will be games to play on the night such as rounders, slow bike riding, sack
race etc so please bring some sensible footwear.

date – Leeds Country Way Relay – 31 August
The Leeds
Country Way is a 60 mile set of linked footpaths around Leeds.
The Leeds
Country Way Relay is a race for teams of 12, run in pairs, so each pair runs
about 10 miles.
The race
is organised by Kippax Harriers and this year’s race will be on Sunday 31
August. Details at http://www.kippaxharriers.org.uk/lcwv2.htm
Usually
around 40 teams compete, from most of the running clubs in Leeds and some from
a little further away.
For the
last 3 years, Valley Striders have had 5 teams running, i.e. 60 runners.
Last year we won all 3 major team prizes – 1st men’s team, 1st
women’s team and 1st vets team.
We plan to have 5 teams again (and maybe a 6th).
Three teams will be created by selection but the other teams will be on a first
come first served basis.
This is
to announce that the first 24 runners who email are guaranteed a place to run –
you can run with a VS friend or we will match you with a suitable partner.
Email teams@valleystriders.org.uk if you’d
like to run! Please reply ASAP for one of the 24 guaranteed places!
However
we are planning to select all teams by middle of July. Why so soon?
Because some people take long summer holidays and if we leave it later it may
be impossible to arrange recces.
So all
please reply by 6 July to let us know whether you are available.

Sunday 7 September – Vale of York half marathon from
Sherburn-in-Elmet. This is a new race, looks to be a flat course. 17
Striders already entered and I suggest we add it as a Grand Prix race as we are
one short for the “medium road” category. Details at https://racebest.com/races/vale-of-york-half-marathon .
The race has a limit of 1000, has only been open for 6 weeks and is already
half full so suggest you enter soon.
Charity Quiz Night –
Message from Sean Fitzgerald
My work
are putting on a charity quiz night at Elland Road on Thursday 24th July, which
will be compared by Rich Williams from Heart FM. All the proceeds go to 3
Yorkshire charities which do great work in the community, and their are some
great prizes up for grabs. It would be great if we could put together a team of
10 striders.
Also the
event is backed by RICS , and the target clientele will be very construction
and property led, thus its also a great networking opportunity for those who
work in this sector.
Please
contact me on sean.fitzgerald@randstadcpe.com if you
are interested. It's £9 a head if we can get a table together.

info re parkrun
From Paul
Kaiser - Hi Bob, I believe you've missed Sharon off the parkrun winners list!
26/06/10 at Hyde Park Sharon is listed as second F in the results, but the
first female (in 17:39!!) was later proven to be a bloke running with his
girlfriends barcode (previous times are 23:xx - 40:xx!) I Think you
queried it at the time and Sharon was accepted as the winner, but frustratingly
the results have only been partially changed so the 'first' women is now
'Unknown ATHLETE (F)'. Previously she was named. Funnily enough, in the same
event, there was also initially another women listed in front of Sharon who was
struck off the results for only doing two of the three laps! All a bit
farcical but a win is a win!
From
Graham Pawley - Interesting parkrun stats - one point to note is that Holly
Williams is the only woman at either of the Roundhay parkruns (junior and
5km) to have been first overall finisher (on 7.7.12) beating all the
men/boys. Tally Diamond has been 2nd quite a few times at the junior
parkrun but has always had a boy ahead of her.
I’ll do
the junior parkrun stats in the next V S Update.
Jaime Sawiuk – further
info
I
qualified from Brunel University in 2008 and since then I have pursued as many
opportunities to learn and gain experience in sport. I am an Ex-Elite gymnast
myself and I represented Yorkshire. Having trained up to 6 times a week and
coached from a young age I understand what it is like to be the athlete keen to
get through to he next competition. I also know what it is like to be the coach
and I use this first hand knowledge to help guide both athletes and coaches
with their rehab.
I have
worked in numerous settings including spinal, upper and lower limb as well as
obstetrics and chronic pain management. In addition I have worked with several
rugby clubs including, Hunslet Hawks, and Parkside Hawks. Presently I am in my
6th season with Leodensians, and my 2nd season with Bramley
Buffaloes. Lastly I work for British Gymnastics covering competitions for
higher level athletes.
I
recently have treated a number of runners and cyclists which I have found
extremely rewarding. All of which I have managed to get through the marathons
they have been training so hard for and helping them to achieve their PB.
Kindly one marathon runner has mentioned myself on our testimonial page on our
website.
It is
this interest that has drawn me to Valley Striders to do a free advice session
and treatment session for runners and cyclists. If treatment is needed on a
longer term basis I will provide all Valley Striders with discounts to see me
specifically in Clinic at David Lloyds. At David Lloyds we can also offer
a functional screening tool to prevent injury. We have a pool and running track
which can be used before or after appointments.
I now
keep myself fit with running and Pilates ( I have been known to still do the
odd cartwheel). I will finish my instructing course for Pilates in August if
there is any interest for me to start a class.
