Happy New Year

What are your plans for 2014?

In team events, Striders men will be hoping to retain their Peco title, women will be hoping to climb the table.  We have the three main XC events in January and February – Yorkshires (this Saturday), and Northerns and The (English) National (closing dates this Sunday, see below).  We made good efforts in Calderdale Way Relay and Bradford Millennium Way in 2013, can we do better in 2014?  Can we retain all 3 team titles (men, women and vets) at the Leeds Country Way Relay?  And can we get a record 6 teams for LCW?  Please try to keep these dates free!

As individuals, you’ll all have your own key events that you’re targeting, whether it be to achieve a particular time (a PB for some or an Age Best for others) and/or to be placed in the category prizes.

But while training for “your” events, there’s no better training than racing, and when racing there’s nothing better than racing with/against other Striders!  So next Tuesday we’re getting together, over pie and peas, to decide the Grand Prix races for 2014.  And I know that there is an email discussion in progress to decide the Fell Championship races for 2014.  And hopefully many of these will fit in with your training/racing schedules.  And the VSCC grand prix format has already been decided – email [email protected] if you aren’t on the cycling mailing list.

You may also be interested in entering the Leeds Race Series 2014.  This is a grand prix style series containing all the “local” races in Leeds, most of which are £10 or less to enter and have low travel costs (nil if you go by bike!). In the 2013 Series John Shanks and Sarah Harper both finished in bronze medal position.  See www.leedsathletics.net for details.

So on to the diary for the 10 days …

Help wanted in February and April

On Sunday 16 February we’re organising Peco Race 4, probably at Danefield on Otley Chevin but possibly somewhere else (if we can find somewhere to allow more runners and better parking).  Wherever it is, we need about 12 people to help set up the course, help with car parking and do the race admin (accepting entries) – these people will be able to run.  And we will need about 12 marshals including recorders and timekeepers.  Please email [email protected] if you know you’re available on that date and say whether you will do pre-race, during-race or both).

On Saturday 12 April we’re organising the Meanwood Trail and Junior Races from Leos.  Please keep the date free (and please email [email protected] if you know you’re available on that date).

First aid course

There is a first aid course being held at the Postal Social Club (just across the road from Kirkstall Leisure Centre) on Tuesday 28 January either from 6pm-10pm or 6:30pm-10:30pm (to be decided).  The course is being arranged by (and subsidised) by Leeds Athletics Network and we are expecting it to be accentuated towards likely athletics injuries.  The cost (after subsidy) is £15, but Valley Striders will pay this if you are a regular volunteer at our events.  Contact me if you are interested.

Results

You Muddy Fools

An interesting concept, the clock started at 0:00, you could start at any time you wanted, but if you finished after 50:00 you were disqualified.  The winner was therefore whoever started latest but finished within the 50 mins.

Will Kerr from Saltaire started last and finished within the 50 mins so won.  Congratulations to Franco Pardini who started second last and finished within the 50 mins so was runner-up.

Of the 27 runners, 7 were Striders, but you’ll have to go to http://www.evensplits.co.uk/images/Muddy%20Fools%203%20Results%20Spreadsheet.pdf for the full results and see who was inside the 50 mins and who didn’t make it!
