Leeds parkrun 3 August – runners (and a few helpers) needed

As you will see from Alex’s message below, we now are just two short of the minimum number for the finish-line team plus marshals. Two or three extras would be very welcome, so email [email protected] if you’d like to help.

I’m now also asking that lots of Striders come to Hyde Park / Woodhouse Moor to RUN next Saturday.  (I’m sure you Roundhay regulars could miss one week!)

This is a big promo opportunity for Striders to recruit new members.   It would be great to see twenty or thirty runners in V S vests, spread well through the field. When you finish, have a chat with the runners just ahead and just behind you.

We’d also like 4 or 5 pacers.  John Shanks has already volunteered to lead a group aiming for 20 mins.  It would be good to have pacers also for 25 and 30 mins and maybe some intermediate times.  Please email [email protected] if you’d like to be a pacemaker.

Tuesday 6 August food

Message from Mr Food – Tony will be putting on a curry night for the next food evening and if people would like dine with us, the options will be chicken curry with rice and pita bread for £3 and there will be a vegetarian option also. Please confirm orders by 10pm on Sunday 4th August to [email protected]  advising whether you would like the meat or vegetarian option, whether you’d like apple pie and whether you will be at the first sitting (7:15pm) or second sitting (8:30).

Leeds parkrun 3 August – message from Alex Watson-Usher

Thank you to everyone that has volunteered to help out at Leeds parkrun next weekend. The volunteer list currently looks like this:

Timekeeper: Ian Sanderson

Number/Time checker: Bob Jackson

Funnel Marshal: Roy Huggins (after running)

Handing out tokens: Sarah Smith

Handing out tokens: Louise Cazan

Barcode Scanning 1: James Tarran

Barcode Scanning 2: Jason Watson-Usher

Marshall 1: Rachel Foy

Marshall 2: Dan Murray

Marshall 3:

Marshall 4:

Marshall 5: Meryll Cripps

Pacer 19:45: John Shanks

Pacer 24:45:

Pacer 29:45:

Available for course set up, but would like to run:

Roy Huggins

Simon Midwood

Jon Pownall

Steve Wilkins

Please could everyone that is volunteering arrange to get to Hyde Park for 8.00am prompt – there is quite a lot to sort out/set up and your help will be greatly appreciated/rewarded with confectionary.

As you can see, we’re still a little short on volunteers, so if there is anyone willing to help out, then please do let me know: [email protected]

I am also desperate for a couple more pacers! The Pudsey Pacer man I spoke to a few weeks ago was very delighted with himself whilst telling me how many pacers they’d had when they hosted, so I would quite like to at least match their efforts, if not have more! Nothing like a bit of friendly competition, eh! ;-) I know it’s hard to give up your own run, but just imagine the joy of getting someone to achieve a new PB by pacing them – you’d feel as happy as a baby penguin :-)

I look forward to seeing you all there! :-)

Thank you, Alex

Note on pacing from Bob

Sam Dooley of Hyde Park Harriers told me a good story about a volunteer pacer.  Someone volunteered to pace for a time much slower than his normal time.  But sped off on the first km at his normal pace.  Got to the 1km mark and stopped for a minute, was then on schedule so set off again.  Same again at 2km, 3km, 4km and then also at the finish.  Needless to say he wasn’t invited again.

Obviously pacers need to run at even pace – maybe a few seconds faster downhill than uphill.  Sam’s suggestion was that the pacer’s target time would be about 2 mins slower than their normal time – then they would have enough breath to encourage their pace group.  But not running so slowly that they’d be running unnaturally.

Leeds Country Way – Sunday 1 September

Runners will be allocated to teams and given leg numbers after next Tuesday, so look at www.valleystriders.org,uk/vsteams.htm on Wednesday morning.  Hopefully there won’t be too many surprises.

We’re now just up to full strength.  But last year, during August, 8 people dropped out and had to be replaced by substitutes.  So please email [email protected] and we’ll put you on our reserves list.

The email address was wrong in the last V S Update, here’s the correct one [email protected]

That just about completes the VS Junior Grand Prix that runs from 31 August 2012 to 1 September 2013.  The only remaining event is “Best parkrun of the year” which runs till 31 August.  Points to date are on the website – see http://valleystriders.org.uk/vsjungp1213.htm .  A full set of results is at http://valleystriders.org.uk/vsjunres1213.htm

The 2013/4 Junior Grand Prix starts with the Wetherby junior run on 8 September.

A few parents have asked questions about vests, membership fees, affiliation etc, and we’ve put answers to these on the “Juniors” page on the website http://valleystriders.org.uk/vsjunior.htm  .  Please email me if you’ve any other questions.  NB the new Striders year starts on 1 September, we’ll notify you of the new annual fees.
