London Marathon Good For Age Entries
Ian Sanderson emailed
to say that London Marathon 2014 'Good for Age' entries are now open,
until July 8th. Not a ballot, guaranteed entry provided you have a qualifying
time from 2012 or this year. Short marathons don't count, Ian says he’s using
his 2012 result before it expires.
Striders Autumn Marathon – message
from Tom
Eurostar tickets from
London to Brussels are now on sale for the weekend of the Brussels marathon.
There's a few of who are going on the 10.58 from London on the Saturday
and returning on the 14.56 from Brussels on the Tuesday.
Parkruns Saturday 22 June
Gwil Thomas won at
Tilgate (Sussex). Ian Sanderson was 2nd at Sheringham (Norfolk), but a
moral victory as he was beaten by “Unknown Athlete”.
There were 27
Striders at Roundhay and 6 at Hyde Park. John Shanks and Sarah Harper were at
Carlisle (Unknown Athlete won there as well, he/she gets around) and Ruth
Warren was at Harrogate.

Organiser, Tim Cock
In his speech at the
prize presentation Tim said “another excellent race organised by Valley
Striders, well marked and well marshalled on every turn”
An apology from a
mountain biker
Dear Bob, thanks for
your email and explanation. I was out last night on my mountain bike and was
aiming to set a PB. I always give way to other uses, so when first encountered
your group, I stopped of course to let people past thinking I could make up the
time. At the next section I had to do the same again and then the third time it
was obvious that my chances of a PB were numbered. I'm sure you can imagine
that sinking feeling.
Fair enough if it was
your annual organised event and it was with permission. Could be an idea to put
signs up at the major entrances to the woods to say an event in progress.
I'm afraid I tore a
strip off one of your marshals - so please could you pass on my apologies to
her? Pure frustration on my part as the PB alluded me once again.
Race Report - Welsh 1000m Peaks Race
2013 – from Mick Loftus
Boiling hot and
dripping with sweat I climbed up the final steps onto the main Snowdon ridge
from the PYG Track, immediately the cold wind hit me and I felt chilled to the
bone in seconds. Although I was only a few minutes away from the end of
the 2013 Welsh 1000m Peaks Race, I took no chances and put on a hat, gloves and
kag. Then I turned away from the crowds making for the summit of Snowdon
to climb the subsidiary peak Garnedd Ugain. After 'dibbing' at the
control I retraced my steps back to the main path and climbed up to the finish
just by the Snowdon summit cairn. I had made it in 5:03, well up on my
2011 time.
The race had started
in a field next to the sea 22 miles away. Then we had followed a route taking
in Carnedd Llewelyn, Carnedd Dafydd, Glyder
Fawr, Garnedd Ugain and Snowdon. In total this had included
8000ft of ascent, about double the Three Peaks total. It is a spectacular
and uncompromising route, especially above the Ogwen valley. This section
includes the Y Gribin ridge, which is an exposed rocky scramble.
For those who have
done the Yorkshire Three Peaks Fell Race, it is similar because there are
essentially three large climbs but where the Three Peaks are linked with
sections of flattish ground, this Welsh monster only has about 500m of flat
running along the A5. It is a little shorter than the Three Peaks but is
likely to take at least an hour more to complete it.
The race is unusual
for a number of reasons; it is a point to point route with a bus to the start,
it starts at sea level and finishes at the highest point in England and Wales,
and from the finish there is still a 5 mile 3000 ft descent to the car
park.
The organisation of
the race is excellent and it is definitely one to attempt if you have done a
few 'Long A' fell races already.

European Triathlon
Championships in Alanya, Turkey – from Howard Jeffrey
Here is a short report about my participation in the Olympic distance European
Triathlon Championships in Alanya, Turkey last
week.
My goal
was not to finish last in my age category mv55-59 and I was 15/22.
swim
0:33:35 (17) transition 0:00:59 bike 1:11:10 (18) transition 0:00:58 run
0:46:15 (11) total 2:31:57 – results here
(category winner, Alfi Carez (Sui) in total 2:02:19).
I
performed to the best of my ability on the day – warm sea swim, flat (part
cobbled) bike laps and undulating run in 80 degree heat.
Thoroughly
enjoyed the experience and the resort and weather were fantastic as were the
Turks who were very welcoming, if not particularly triathlon savvy.
So many
Brits out there it seemed like a domestic competition at times and a sackful of
medals was brought home to GB, including gold in the junior mixed relay,
silver, female std elite and bronze male std elite inter alia.
Three
days of sprints and olympic distances including paratriathlon – awesome! Most
enduring memory will be the senior mixed relay members sprinting down a 60
meter promontory and diving into the sea to start each of their mini triathlon
legs.
Next
major competition is the World sprint Duathlon championships in Ottawa in
August and I have made the cut for the 2014 sprint distance triathlon in the
next age group up (60-64). Word is it will be in Kitzbühel, Austria which might
make the Keswick half seem flat!
Job Wanted – from Eddy Robinson
Hi
Bob,
Hope you're well, I was just wondering if you'd be able to
put this on a Valley Striders email. I'm back from uni for the next 3 or 4
months and basically I really need some money, so if anyone knows anyone who
can offer me any kind of job I'd be really grateful. Literally any kind of job
even if it’s just something small for a few days, that'd be better than
wallowing in my overdraft for the whole summer. Hopefully I'll be running on a
Tuesday at least a few times while I'm home so I guess I'll see you then.
Cheers,
Eddy
