Fell Runners group meet 6:30pm at Darwin Gardens Ilkley for recce of Jack Bloor route.  Further details from Simon Vallance:

·         Reminder that the next fell session will be a recce of the Jack Bloor race route (race takes place the following Tuesday 14th May).  A recce is useful in the event of bad weather, to get a feel for the terrain and to inform your route choice so you can work out where to save a few seconds on your competitors.

·         It’s a great short race, lots of local interest and usually a good Striders turn out.  There are also junior races beforehand.  Full details from here http://www.jackbloor.co.uk/ and a copy of the route http://www.jackbloor.co.uk/index.php/route

·         Please be ready to leave from the Darwin Gardens car park below the White Wells Road in Ilkey at no later than 6.30pm.  Please let me know if you are coming so that we don’t leave without you…

·         For those wanting to make a night of it, we’ll move on to the Wetherspoons for some refreshments afterwards.  Here’s hoping that the weather is as nice as today.

Note that Juniors, beginners and Intermediates will be at Grammar School for Leeds on Tuesday 14 May

Thu 23 May – Apperley Bridge Canter – VSGP (also part of Leeds Race Series, see www.leedsathletics.net )

Fri 24 May – Post Hill 5k (part of Leeds Race Series)

Sat 25 May – parkrun mobrun at Templenewsam

Ronnie and Neil emailed - This year the parkrun 'Mob Run' is visiting Temple Newsam parkrun on the 25th of May.

The event is a simple challenge for a bit of inter-club fun. Clubs across the area see who can turn out the most runners, and who has the fastest average runners at a specific parkrun. Last year it was held at Leeds parkrun and a great success, this year Temple Newsam parkrun will be hosting the event.

The more members you can turn out the higher your club will be in the table! If you could spread the word to your members about this event then we'd be very grateful, of course like always with parkrun its totally free.

You can always point them in the direction of our website article about the event:- http://www.parkrun.org.uk/templenewsam/news/2013/04/26/mob-run-2013/

Many thanks indeed, hope to see you there - the cafe afterwards serves great food and parkrunners get 10% off!

Bob says – at the first two mobruns, Striders had the second most number of runners, beaten each time by Hyde Park Harriers for whom it was home territory.  Now we have a chance to get the most runners at the third attempt, so I’m asking that all parkrunning Striders turn up at Templenewsam on 25th.  I’ll be there!   NB could everyone make sure they are registered as Striders!

Sun 16 June – Bradford Millennium Way Relay

We still need lots of runners email [email protected]

Sun 23 June – Chris Leggatt Memorial 5k at Pool (part of Pool Feast)

Chris was a Valley Strider for part of his running career.  Older Striders will remember the Pool 10k and / or the Pool Fell Race both organised by Chris, and when VS organised a Peco race on Otley Chevin 2 years ago, Chris helped myself and Mick Tinker recce the route.

Note the race goes the north side of the Wharfe to Castley and back so is not as hilly as the 10k and fell race which both went up the Chevin.

It would be great to see a large contingent of Striders at this new race in his memory.

Fell Championship

Steve Webb emailed

League updated with results of Three Peaks (and now on website); I still need to add Clive Bandy to the Heptonstall scores but the results seem to have gone AWOL.

Regarding Three Peaks, I'll leave it to those who had very good runs (Messrs Loftus and Murray spring to mind) to provide a report.  For me it was a case of 2 Peaks good, 3 Peaks bad, as a total lack of long runs in training took effect.

Marathon of the North – report from Ian Sanderson

This was the second staging of the grandly named 'Marathon of the North', which is the organisers' attempt to disguise the fact it is in Sunderland. The race starts and finishes outside the 'Stadium of Light' football ground (they are big on hyperbole in Sunderland - bit of a inferiority complex going on, I think) so access was easy with minimal tailbacks and lots of on-site parking. The ground is open for the event, so there are lots of toilets (no queues) and you can get out of the weather if you need to.

The marathon and the new half marathon started at 9:30, with the larger 10K race setting off half an hour later, but the start wasn't particularly crowded and I managed to line up a few feet from the start-line. The race route is extremely convoluted; in broad terms you cross the bridge and do a half marathon on the south side of the river and then another half on the north side but it twists and turns up and down random side streets and you feel like you are getting nowhere fast. It was all marked out well enough with traffic cones and barriers but it did sap the spirits a bit and I have read that some of the slower marathon runners found it a bit difficult to figure out towards the end. And while I am trying to put any tribal prejudices aside, you couldn't call Sunderland a particularly attractive town to run around. But the marshals were jolly, even if the locals were mainly dis-interested, and the finish was noisy enough to get you over the line. You pick your t-shirt, medal and goodie bag up by the football pitch, which was a nice touch, before a mercifully short walk back to the car. In summary, a perfectly well organised race but a bit underwhelming, to be honest.

As for my race, well I had high hopes (as ever) having done more mileage than normal in preparation…admittedly that included a 50 mile ultra in the middle of my 'tapering' phase, but where the harm in that? I started quickly as I tried to tuck-in behind a bunch of runners to keep out of the strong, gusty wind. I suspect they were half marathon runners because I was soon running sub-3 hour pace but I optimistically decided to stick with it, despite failing to keep up with them and hence out of the wind. I cheered up a bit when I spotted Ged and Iain on one of the many out and back sections, but it was a bit of a dull plod round the first half. Beyond the half marathon split, the road was almost deserted but the organisers decided to throw in a few hills to add interest to the second half - thanks. It was hard and lonely work running along Roker sea-front for a couple of miles, just so we could turn back the way we came, and the pace inevitably dropped as the miles plodded by. The last two miles into the headwind were particularly cruel, despite the odd word of encouragement from random Makems ("Way te gan, Striders!"). I stumbled over the line in time to shave a few seconds off my p.b., and just avoided the rain - result!

     36    Ian Sanderson       3:08:35       97

    231    Ged Coll            3:43:38       90

    231    Iain Currie         3:43:38       90

Winning time: 2:42:23 , 785 ran
