Training – Tuesday 26 February

Note early start time for Tuesday sessions next week, Holly and Grace’s session starts at 6:45pm, and the “club” (not that everyone else isn’t in the club) hill session goes off at 7pm prompt (that’s 7pm not 7:05pm or 7:10pm), so that those attending Debbie’s nutrition workshop are back in time.

Also note that the 6pm session will be split into two at opposite ends of the rugby pitch, Andy & Richard leading the juniors and Kathy & Ken leading the adults.

Debbie’s Nutrition workshop

There are still 4 places available on Debbie’s Nutrition workshop at 8:30pm on Tuesday.  Cost is just £3.  If you want one of the places, please TEXT me on 0777 5898 558, and I will confirm whether you have secured one of the remaining places.

Final Peco race – Sunday 3 March

A reminder that it’s Peco Race 5 at Bodington / Adel next Sunday, juniors at 10:00 or 10:20 and seniors at 11:00, enter and pay on the day (only £3) and you need not have entered previous races in the series.

Details will be on the website www.pecoxc.co.uk on Thursday 28 February.

I’m expecting it to be from the sports pavilion in the Bodington Hall complex which is on the North side of the Ring Road, you can definitely go up A660 Otley Road and then turn right just as the dual carriageway ends (just before the crem), then bear right as you go down the hill and right again at the first hall of residence.  You may also be able to get in by turning at the Ring Road / Adel traffic lights, bear left and then first left into the Bodington Hall complex, it is a one-way system (anti-clockwise!) and you need to go two-thirds of a lap.

The mens and ladies leagues are both finely poised and this is what was in the Abbey Newsletter this week

After everyone’s sterling efforts in the mud of Barnbow Field yesterday, Abbey Runners go into the final race of the PECO season topping both the Ladies’ and the Men’s tables.  BUT whilst the Ladies have established a four point cushion on the second place Wetherby Runners, the Men are just one point ahead of Valley Striders.  So, please put 3rd March in your diary/smartphone/wall calendar and come out and run for the Abbey team, whether you’re fast or less fast, new or second hand, boy or girl.  This last race is as local as local can be (Bodington Fields) and it’s the first cross-country counter for the Abbey Grand Prix, so at the same time as scoring points for the team you can score points for yourself.  Your club needs you!

OK, here’s the Striders view.  The men’s team is just one team point behind Abbey and equal with Saltaire.  Only by winning the last race are we guaranteed to win the league.  The ladies are currently positioned 4th.  There’s no chance of overtaking Abbey and Wetherby, but a 3rd place finish next Sunday (which is what they achieved in race 2 and 4) would probably put them 3rd

And it’s a VS Grand Prix race.

Pie and Peas – Tuesday 5 March

A week on Tuesday (5 March) is the first Tuesday in the month so it must be time for pie and peas.  Again there will be TWO SITTINGS, one at 7:15pm and the other at 8:30pm.

Book at [email protected] before 10pm Sunday 3rd choosing meat or veggie pie, mushy peas or baked beans, and whether you want apple pie, and which sitting you want to go to.

Peco XC Relays - Sunday 10 March, 11:00 at Templenewsam

From Mark Hetherington, league organiser

There will be a cross country relay race to finish the season off in style. Teams of 3 will compete round a 3.5 mile-ish lap at Temple Newsam.

To make it even more interesting, the race will incorporate a ‘PECO v West Yorkshire Winter League’ Challenge Event. Each League will field 6 ‘select’teams (M & F ‘Open’, M & F ‘Vets’ [40+], M & F ‘SuperVets’ [50+]).

The Club Team race will be between a single team selected by each club. This team must contain at least 1 Lady and at least 1 Vet (40+) and no more than 1 Male under 40. This race is open to all PECO and WYWL clubs.

In addition, there will be prizes for the first ‘other’ teams in each of the following categories: M Open, M Vets (40+), F Open, F Vets (40+) and ‘Mixed’ (at least 1 F per team)

There will also be a 3 x 1 mile-ish relay for Juniors (aged 8 – 16). Teams must contain at least 1 U11 and at least 1 U13. Prizes for the first Boys, Girls and ‘Mixed’ teams.

I know that this all sounds a bit complicated, but trust me, it’ll be loads of fun!

After the presentation of prizes for this race, we will hold the PECO XC League Presentations at a nearby venue (TBC) at 2.00pm (to allow for those who are racing elsewhere on this date to get there in time).

Full and further details will be posted here on PECO XC League web site as and when they are confirmed.

From Me

Note that Sue Sunderland has been selected for the Peco F50 league team – congratulations Sue!

We’ll email in the next couple of days to check availability for “Valley Striders A”

Everyone else, including juniors, please make up your own teams of 3

Meanwood Valley Trail and Junior Races – Saturday 20 April

Thanks to those who have replied so far, we have 23 marshals now, need another 47.  If you can help, please email [email protected] .

I’m still looking for more help with publicity – taking entry forms to local sports centres, running shops and, in particular, schools.

Is anyone free to hand out forms at the end of the Peco race next Sunday and the Peco relays the following Sunday?

Message from Sarah Howell

I'm looking for some volunteers to be filmed for a couple of minutes talking about why it is important that they are able to write accurately for their job. The videos are to show year 9 (14 year olds) as part of literacy week at my school. What I'd need is for you to introduce yourselves, say what you do for a living and what writing is involved in that job. If you had an anecdote about especially good/poor writing even better. The last thing would be to set them a challenge, (E.g. to write a letter to a nuisance tenant who has been too loud) and give them about 5 tips for writing in that style. I'll be filming - in a very low tech way - before the end of next week and can fit in to a time of your choosing. I'd be really grateful if anyone can help. Thanks, Sarah: [email protected]

Striders Autumn Tour – message from Patrick Barrett

Dear people of the VS

After the great success of last year’s trip to Eindhoven, I’ve been inundated with requests for details of this year’s Valley Striders Autumn Marathon Tour. Well after much research, deliberation, the Eindhoven posse have overwhelmingly voted for the city of our beloved Euro leaders, Brussels! on Sunday 6th October 2013. They have a run to suit all, including Full and half marathon and 4K, (yep, a 4K)

We had about 30 Valley Striders that went to Eindhoven last October.  We all had a fantastic time, both running and the local hospitality, let’s try and beat that number this year. If you have any doubts, just ask anybody who went to any of the previous tours, inc Dublin and Amsterdam

So the provisional arrangements and costs are:

Sat 05th

·         Train to Manchester airport, approx 7:30am, for as little as £15 return, book early

·         Flight: Manchester to Brussels, dept 10:30am, arrv 13:00, approx £100 return

·         Bus to City centre, approx 30 mins,  few Euros

·         Central hotel, approx £50/60 pppn, B&B based on 2 sharing

·         Marathon Expo, to collect race number and goody bag. Race Entry, EUR 60, 25 and 15 respectively

Sun 06th

·         am, Run for all your worth, whichever distance

·         After race, sweaty beers

·         pm, rest and/or more beers

·         Evening¸ all meet for dinner and recovery party

Mon 07th

·         Sight seeing, if you know what I mean?

If you’re interested, can you confirm by Fri 15th March at the latest, by emailing: [email protected] after we have the final number, I will arrange hotel(s) and bus transfers in Brussels, you will need to book your own train to/from Manchester, flight and race entry

Cheers
