Meanwood Valley Trail and Junior Races – Saturday 20 April

I’m still looking for help with publicity – taking entry forms to local sports centres, running shops and, in particular, schools.

I’m also now requesting marshals, if you can help, please email [email protected] .  So far, I have just 1 reply!

Nutrition Talk / Workshop – Tuesday 26 February at Leos

We have booked Debbie Fearnley to hold a workshop “Fundamentals of Nutrition” on Tuesday 26 February at 8:30pm at Leos.

Debbie is a registered nutritionist specialising in sports nutrition (MSc) and has just moved back up to Leeds after working in London with various sports clubs including Newham AC, and for NHS Westminster. She works for the Amateur Swimming Association on England Talent Camps and provides nutrition support services based at Alison Rose's physio clinic (CSPC).

The workshop is limited to 20 places and will be booked on a first come first served basis – book to  [email protected] with the subject “Debbie”.  The price to you is £3.00 which is just under half price of her normal rates.

Debbie says “As the workshops are interactive, so that I can get round and speak to everyone when setting individual goals I ask for no more than 20 athletes/parents/coaches”.  So although there will be a presentation there will also be opportunities to ask your own questions.

Places are likely to go faster than York Marathon entries, so don’t delay, book today.

Stokesley Duathlon & Striders Cycling Tops

I mentioned the Stokesley Duathlon in the last V S Update, but sadly both the novice and main are now full.  Those who haven't entered will therefore need to wait for next year and we'll do more publicity in advance of the race. Can all of those that have entered please contact Dan to confirm at [email protected]. All entries for Striders are showing as unattached so it is difficult to pick out all the VS entries.

For those competing, Andy Stoneman, Dan and John Batchelor have come up with a design for a Valley Striders branded cycling top as can be seen using the following link www.valleystriders.org.uk/cyclingtop.pdf. The cost of the tops are discounted at £20 each (short zip) or £30 each (full length zip) and this price only applies to competitors. For non-competitors who would be interested in a top for training and cycling to events etc., tops can also be bought but at a slightly higher price of £41 (short zip) £51 (full length zip). Waterproof or windproof gilets are also available for £45 (competitors and non-competitors). Some people may have seen the samples at the club on Tuesday but if not, please come along to the track session next week and ask Dan who will have them to show. There is a possibility that we may be able to reduce the full price tops slightly but we can only determine this once we know final numbers.

Due to production times, we will need commitments from everyone by 19th February so please email Dan at
[email protected]  as soon as possible if you would like to order a top. In terms of sizes, there are men’s and women’s sizes available. Men’s sizes are XS 34” (Chest), S 36”, M 38”, L 40”, XL, 42”, 2XL 44”, 3XL 46”. Women’s sizes are 2XS/6 28” (Chest), XS/8 30”, S/10 32”, M/12 34”, L/14 36”, XL/16 38”, 2XL/18 40”.

The Spine Race

John Shanks emailed

Thought I'd give a heads up to a cracking event which is due open for entries in the next week or so called "The Spine".

The route starts in Edale, follows the Pennine Way and ends 268 miles north in a town somewhere in the Scottish Borders. You get 7 days to complete on foot and just to make it a wee bit more difficult it takes place at the beginning of February. My mate took part in this year's event, and has entered again through anger as he came within 18miles of the finish on the final day before being trapped in a mud hut by heavy snow drifts.

There is support all along the route and hot food provided at checkpoints, deposit is £255 with approx. another £150 to be paid by November.

I'm still thinking about it but from what my mate said it sounds great and maybe some of the fell runners might enjoy this.

Rombalds Stride Report and Results – from Ian Sanderson and Steve Dixon

Ian emailed

I think there were eight striders enjoying the winter sunshine up above Ilkley on Saturday. Conditions were just about perfect with the frost making the moor (relatively) firm under foot, although times still seem to be a bit down on last year when it was frozen solid.

I ran round with Simon Redshaw and Steve Dixon for most of the first half, enjoying the extensive views and the extensive cake selections as we crossed Baildon and Rombald moors. We almost missed the check-point at Pipers Crag, but so did lots of people (mental note: following the person in front does not equate to navigation). Simon was flying and he left us behind after White Wells, gaining 6 minutes over Steve in the last 7-8 miles.

I ended up 11 minutes behind after a few navigational issues on the Chevin; don’t ask me how - all you have to do is keep going up! But I eventually found my way out of the woods and back to Guiseley for a steak and kidney pie and a catch up with some of the other strider there (and a hug off Joyce - the real reason we do these events).

Steve emailed

A cold and sunny day with a light breeze was the reward for all the entrants of this event.  Other rewards were in plentiful supply in the form of cakes and drinks at the cheerfully manned checkpoints.  Not to mention the tasty pies at the finish!

What a privilege though to have such glorious terrain to run through on our doorstep and this was the real reward for runners and walkers alike.

The ground was frozen in many places, but, quite often, not frozen enough to take the weight of us heavy footed runners and intimate acquaintance was made at regular intervals with the bogs that lay beneath.

For the record I lost 1 kg in weight so obviously did not do justice to the en-route cakes and biscuits and jelly babies.

I was aware of 8 Striders running but it is possible that there were more and I’ve just missed them looking through the results sheet.   My apologies to those that I may have missed.

Pudsey and Bramley club provided the winner in Richard Pattinson 2.43.04.

Message from Martin Clements in New Zealand

Just stumbled across the Valley Striders web site whilst surfing the web.

That bought back some memories I used to be a member of the club about 17 18 years ago, and remember what a great club it was then and what great camaraderie there was amongst the runners be they good or bad.

I remember with great fondness the two holiday’s the club organised in Malta to run the Malta marathon. I still remember well rooming with Stuart St.John. I wonder if he or any of the others that went remember what we did with the lip stick!!!

A few of the names at the club I remember well are the O’Callaghan brothers , John Umpleby (still remember him bringing in the photos of his hip replacement), Martyn Hopson (winning the Leeds Marathon), Howard Jeffery (an old work colleague) and George Black.

Anyway just thought I’d send a quick email and you never know one them might even remember me.

I replied, updating Martin with news of Stuart, Steve, Mike, John, Martyn, Howard and George.

Martin replied

Thanks very much for replying to my email.  Finding the website and getting a reply has really made my year even though its only January!.

Absolutely no problem about putting my email in your newsletter.

Myself and my wife spent a long time yesterday evening reminiscing over the great social times we had down at Leos with the club, great BBQ nights.

She remembers George Dawson Terry Bean, Keith Cluderay and Paul Furness, hope there're all still going strong, Also does Harry Bates still come along I know he was with Skyrac but always said Valley Striders was a

great social club that did a bit of running.

Thanks again for replying have to say this has made me homesick for the old Tuesday night club runs.

The web site is now on my favorites bar and I will be keeping a keen eye on the club.

Cheers

Martin Clements

Canal Towpath closures – from Steve Dixon

I did mean to mention in my race report for Rombalds the tow path closures that caught me by surprise trying to cycle to Guiseley from Leeds.

Other Striders may want to take into account when planning a run that during February and March long stretches will be closed.

From Wellington Road in the city centre westwards to Kirkstall.   There is a further closure westwards from Calverley Bridge.  I'm not sure how much of that stretch is closed.  There's not a lot of info on the ground and not a lot more on the canal river trust web site
http://canalrivertrust.org.uk/
