Training
The usual – see the
website if you’re unsure!
Myra emailed me
saying she is trying to restart the Friday evening ladies-only session (I think
it used to be 6pm at Roundhay) – any ladies interested please email [email protected].
Events
Good luck to everyone
in the Brass Monkey this Sunday.
A week on Saturday
(26th) is the first parkrun at Templenewsam – see the facebook page
“Temple Newsam parkrun” note the space between (“temple” and “newsam”).
Next V S Grand Prix
races – Brass Monkey, Dewsbury 10k (3 Feb), Peco Race 4 (17 Feb at John
Smeaton). Dan Murray is currently checking the full list of races for
2013 and I’ll publish it next week.
I think the 2013 Fell
Racing Handbook has been published so no doubt the fell runners will be getting
together to decide the races in the V S Fell Championship. If you want to
be involved, email Sarah Smith [email protected]
Sarah will also be
organising the Calderdale Way teams for 19 May – entry forms are just out so we
need to decide how many teams to enter. Email Sarah if you’re interested.
If you enjoy racing
(it’s the best form of training), you can do this without travelling far nor
spending a lot of money as most of the local clubs in Leeds (like us) organise
affordable races through the year. See www.leedsathletics.net and follow the links
to “Leeds Race Series”. There’s also a Junior Race Series.
Apologies from me for
not forwarding the email about York Marathon immediately. I think I’d had
it 2 days. If you’d entered immediately you would have got in, as it was,
5000 places were filled within 4 days.

Race Report - Jolly
Holly 10k – from Sarah Howell
While the rest of the
Striders were gearing up for the winter handicap, Gary and I were driving
through serious rain on our way to Ripon for the 25th anniversary Jolly Holly
jog. I'd found the run by searching for festive events, and while holly covered
the Christmassy feeling I was after, jolly and jog didn't sound too strenuous,
so I signed us up.
The 300 meter round
trip from the car to the clubhouse to collect our numbers gave us our first
soaking. Then the jog to the start line drenched any remaining dry patches. I
cowered under a tree for shelter while Gary warmed up. Then we met Ruth, who
had managed to squeeze her Valley Striders vest over a hoodie - impressive
stuff. She was also freezing and wet.
The sun made a brief,
welcome and surprisingly warm appearance as we set off for 10k of fields,
woodland paths and occasional surfaces not made of mud. The route undulated
without anything too challenging in the hills department and ended with some a
couple of fast flat miles, for which the rain saw fit to rejoin us.
We finished filthy,
wet, but pretty jolly. On a clear day, the scenery (you run round the edge of
Fountains Abbey land) would be amazing; I'd definitely recommend it for next
year.
