Training Next Tuesday (2 October)

After the Handicap a week ago and the Harewood recce earlier this week, we’re now nearly back to normal for next week.

I say “nearly” because the 7pm sessions are starting at 6:45pm and there’s also the extra monthly fell running group.  NB reflective bibs compulsory.

And it’s also the night of the Annual General Meeting, where you’ll be able to find out what has happened in the last 12 months and be involved in the plans for the next 12 months.  The AGM will start at 8:30pm prompt.

Food will be available, book meat pie or veg bake; mushy peas or baked beans to [email protected] by Sunday 30 September 10pm.  Sorry no dessert!  Food will be served from 8:15pm.

There is now an agenda on the website, click on the tab “For Club Members”, the fourth item down is “Committee Meetings and AGMs”

Hope to see lots of Striders, old and new, on 2 October.

This Weekend

There are now 6 Grand Prix events to go, so even if you’ve only run 2 already, you can still achieve the 8 events to qualify for a Grand Prix T-shirt.  OK, one of the events is the Eindhoven marathon, so more realistically you need to have run 3 and then run the rest of the UK events.  The next event is Horsforth 10k this Sunday.  Some decent GP points may be available as the marathon runners are still keeping the miles high (or maybe they’ll run from home to Horsforth, do the 10k and run back).

You also need to decide this weekend whether you’re going to run the West Yorks X C series.  Names must be in by Tuesday 2 October. Email [email protected] .

Events

In the last VSWU, I promised you a comprehensive calendar of events in which Striders are involved, either organising or competing.  There’s a more colourful version on the website, see “For Club Members” tab and click on “Key Dates and Events”.  This also tells you the meaning of the codes in brackets (e.g. GP-XC)

London Marathon Rejections

Valley Striders usually get 4 club places for the London Marathon and we give priority to those who’ve been rejected in the ballot.  If you’ve just received a rejection letter  then email  [email protected] to request a club place.  We put all the names in a hat at the Xmas Do (mid December).

Chris Leggatt

On Monday, Terry Lonergan phoned to tell me the sad news that a former member of Valley Striders, Chris Leggatt, had died the previous day while refereeing a football match.  He was 65.

He joined in May 1983 in the first year of the club, and resigned in 1996 to rejoin his original club Sale Harriers.

However he was frequently in touch and came to the Striders 30th Anniversary Do 2 months ago.  He also helped Mick Tinker and myself design a route for the Peco XC on Otley Chevin 2 years ago, having himself created the Pool Fell Race (no longer in the calendar) many years ago. And in 2010, when the National XC was at Roundhay Park, he was unofficial photographer for Striders and for Sale Harriers. file:///D:/bob/website/vsalbum/10natxc/page_01.htm

Chris is mentioned in Valley Striders founder, Stuart St John’s informal history of the early years of Valley Striders http://valleystriders.org.uk/vslife.htm .  Chris also introduced Olympic marathon bronze medallist Charlie Spedding to the Striders and Charlie became our Club President.  See http://valleystriders.org.uk/vsalbum/85spedd/ph2spedd.htm (some of the pictures were in the slide show at the 30th Anniversary).

Stuart emailed

I've just received the awful news that dear old Leggo has died & I'm really saddened by it. He was a grand lad & fun to run with  especially on the summer Sunday morning Leggo Tours. Of a Saturday he'd go & put water bottles in the bus shelter @ the bottom of Creskeld Lane so we'd be refreshed & have a really good burn up to the top the following day. And I think he was the only Club member to have a National X-Country medal when he was with Sale Harriers.”

Folkin Reservoir Ramble

Striders won 3 of the 4 major prizes.  I’ve heard that at least one of the direction signs was pointing in the wrong direction and many people went off route at some time or other, it may be that one or two runners are still on Blubberhouses Moor.
