Striders 30th Anniversary Barbecue – Tuesday 24 July

Please get your barbecue food orders in by 10pm Sunday to [email protected] by Sunday 22 July 10pm, just saying whether you want veggie or carnivore.  NB Families welcome whether or not runners!  Should be a good night – already 50 bookings.

Unlike pie and peas when Tony makes a few spares for those who’ve forgotten to order, there will be NO spares for the barbecue – so no order, no food (unless there is a cancellation). Just £6, pay on the night.

Small print : if you book and don’t turn up you still owe us (unless we can reallocate)

Club Handicap (adult race)

Meet at the bottom of the path from Alwoodley Lane to Eccup Res (summer hill session). Please arrive by 6:50pm to get your handicap.  First runner (slowest) starts at 7pm, the last (fastest runner) will probably start about 7:30pm, everyone should arrive back about the same time.

Currently planned to be an off-road route of just over 5 miles http://valleystriders.org.uk/hcaptrl.jpg , but we’ll check the course over the weekend, and may change back to our 5 mile road route http://valleystriders.org.uk/hcap10k.jpg .  If you have trail shoes and road shoes bring both!

One mile junior race

Starts at 6:30pm, please arrive by 6:20pm.  Adults also welcome to run this race.

Special message from Mr Food

Starting with the Anniversary BBQ, we’re going to be asking everyone who has ordered food to pay when you get to the counter by putting your money in the beer pot and then ticking your name on a list. We’ve had a few people who have ordered food recently but not turned up so we need to keep a track on who is doing this so we can collect the money in after the event to make sure that Tony isn’t left out of pocket.

Marshals wanted

Need a few marshals for the 5 mile route (whichever route we choose), please contact me!  Half price barbecue for those that volunteer!

Help Wanted

To hand out entry forms for our Harewood Trail Race at two races on Sunday - the Pudsey 10k (also has a junior race) and the Harrogate 10k

I, with help from John Shanks, handed out about 400 forms at the end of Eccup 10 last Sunday and we already have a few entries coming in.

The Pudsey 10k is a similar profile to our race and Harrogate 10k is just down the road, so I’m sure a large percentage of the competitors at both races will be interested in ours.

Please let me know if you can help!

Leeds Country Way – Sunday 2 September

There will be a reminder for this for the next 7 weeks.  Link to Kippax Harriers website http://www.kippaxharriers.org.uk/  has more details including maps of all the legs.   NB the route follows the old Leeds Country Way which, on legs 1 and 2, crosses the border into Wakefield.  This is different from the route maps that are currently on sale.

Email [email protected] if you’d like to run.  You can check you are on the list – there is a link on the “home page” of the V S website.  Please email as soon as you can saying whether you are “Definite (barring injury)”, “Probable”, “Possible” or “Unavailable”

Because of summer holidays it is sometimes difficult to arrange recce runs, so the earlier the better, and so also important to sign up early.

Dates

Sat 21 July – Ingleborough Fell Race – V S Fell Championship

Sun 22 July – Pudsey 10k – V S Grand Prix – also junior races  (2 different distances depending on age) http://www.pudseypacers.com/ .  Can anyone help at the finish by handing out Harewood Trail entry forms?

Entry is ‘on the night’ only: the race starts at 7.00pm, so it would be worth turning up before 6.30pm to be on the safe side! It is important that everyone parks legally and considerately, as we don’t want any complaints from the police or other motorists.”

Windmill Half Marathon (Lytham St Annes) – report from Eric Green

Driving along for the short drive from Preston to Lytham took about half an hour. Somewhat longer than the journey Bob tells me some Valley Strider members made in 1989 for the race. Perhaps next year it will be back on the VS Grand Prix after a lengthy gap.

Signs were up for the British Open and I wondered if I'd see any famous golfers at the run. If there were any golfers running I didn't recognise them.

The first running of the Lytham Windmill Half-Marathon for 25 years attracted over 350 runners from throughout the UK. Starting and finishing at The Fairhaven Lake Cafe, the strong wind took its toll on times. We started in sunshine with the wind blowing from the side. First short lap around the lake seemed quite easy as we were mostly sheltered from the wind..

The next longer lap took us out onto the sea front down to the windmill then a turn back into the wind. This was followed by a rerun of the first lap taking us around the circuit again. By this time the scenery was beginning to look quite familiar.

At the front a good race developed between Lancashire rivals Charlie Pass of Wesham Road Runners and evergreen veteran Paul Muller. The pair broke away after five miles and eventually agreed to share the spoils and finish together in 1hr 18mins 14secs. They tossed a coin to decide who took the first prize at the presentation and Pass won.

I hung around for the results to be published and found that although Paul Muller who is in the same age category was 1st Male 55, as he took second place I took home the 1st M55 prize for coming 2nd M55 (1hr 35mins 2 secs), a £10 shopping voucher.

A very well organised race, plenty of friendly marshals. I'm sure this race will re-establish itself in the Fylde Coast race calendar.

Thank you, Eric, race reports are always welcome!

“Running Wild” book signing

Hello there.

My name is Kieran O'Connor and I am Events Co-Ordinator here at Waterstones Leeds.   I am just writing to tell you about an upcoming event we are hosting in our store which may be of interest to you and the members of your club.

Boff Whalley is better known as guitarist from the chart-topping hellraising Armley band Chumbawamba, but beyond his musical career, Whalley has been prominent in the fell running scene, particularly in West Yorkshire and he runs at a relatively high standard.  He has recently released a book called Running Wild, a wonderfully striking mediation on running and its cleansing, awe-inspiring, other-worldly aspects.  Equal parts travelogue, training log and reminiscene, all laced with Boff's laconic, self-deprecating humour, this is a book that I feel can inspire and well as entertain.

To celebrate the release of this book, Waterstones Leeds are hosting an evening event instore on Thursday 26th July at 7pm with Boff Whalley himself.  He will be talking about what inspired him to write the book, as well as reading a couple of extracts, fielding any questions from the audience and, hopefully, dusting off his acoustic guitar for a few numbers.  Tickets are priced £3, but I would like to offer you and your members free entry to this event, and it will include a free glass of wine for attendees on arrival.  Places are limited, but if this is of any interest to you, please let me know and I'll confirm your places: all I need would be a name and a contact number from attendees just in case any of the details should change in the run up to the event.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

All the best

Kieran O'Connor
