Xmas Meal and Presentation Night Friday 9 December

This is the FINAL REMINDER for the Striders Xmas Meal & Presentation Night next Friday 7:30pm at Leos.

Email [email protected] by Tuesday 6 December 10pm saying whether you want carnivore, veggie or half'n'half (cost is £10).  You will receive a confirmation email if you’ve addressed it correctly.  Please note that 10pm Tuesday is the very latest date/time – Tony will be shopping in Sainsbury’s on Wednesday morning.

Please pay Paul White before the night so that he can enjoy his meal rather than having to spend the whole evening collecting money.  Send a cheque to 17 Whinmoor Court, Red Hall, Leeds LS14 1NX.

To check your booking go to www.valleystriders.org.uk, click “For Club Members” and “London & Xmas”

On the night, bring along any race T-shirts – unworn or only worn once or twice – charity collection for Africa.

Membership Fees

Membership fees for 2011/12 are £20 for first claim members.  We now have 164 paid and 102 to pay.

You can check your membership status at www.valleystriders.org.uk, click “For Club Members” and “Membership List”.   By the way, your England Athletics registration number is on this page too.

If you’ve not yet paid, please pay in the next 2 weeks, otherwise we are going to send the heavies around.  And before you say there are no heavies in running clubs, we have a mutual arrangement with Leos rugby club – they send their forwards round to block the door to collect from our runners, we send our fastest runners to chase their members.

Please send a cheque for £20, payable to Valley Striders, to Paul White at 17 Whinmoor Court, Redhall, Leeds LS14 1NX.  If you don’t have a cheque account, then please email Paul on [email protected] for details of how to make payment via internet banking.

If you’re still owing for Leeds Country Way, West Yorks XC, Xmas meal etc, please pay for these at the same time.

NB There are alternative rates if you

·         Are not intending to run competitively in the next 12 months

Grand Prix and Fell Championship 2011 and 2012

Following the Peco XC race, the 2011 Grand Prix is now complete and all results are on the website.  You can look and find out who are our new men’s and women’s champions (both have not won it previously) and who have won the vets and group categories.

If you’ve run 8 races you should have have had an email from Paul White inviting you to purchase a limited edition VS GP 2011 technical T-shirt.  If you’ve not had that email then please email Paul  [email protected]

The Fell Championship is also complete and the spreadsheet with all results is on the website.

We held a meeting last Tuesday to select the races for the 2012 Grand Prix.  We are including a few more local races as soon to be announced is the “Leeds Athletics Network” Leeds Race Series 2012 open to all runners in Leeds – you’ll be able to get VSGP and Leeds Race Series points at the same time.  I’ll let you know when the Leeds Race Series is launched.

The Fell Championship 2012 is awaiting publication of the 2012 Fell Running Handbook with all the race dates – there will be a meeting in January.

Results

Tour of Pendle

M winner 2:21:48

W winner 2:46:44

Factor 1.1

               Time    Fell Chmp Pts

Mark Woodhead  3:23:59    76.5

Richard Adcock 3:50:21    67.7

Graham Ford    4:19:08    60.2

Sarah Smith    4:23:30    69.6

There is an explanation of the scoring system on the website!

I’d mentioned to John Marsham that he looked weary crossing the line in the Abbey Dash the next day.  He explained There was a certain work pressure to run the Dash, so our work mens team had a chance against the work women's team. I think we just beat them. It hurt though. Sorry for stopping just over the line - I should know better by now, but I was kind of tired …

Peco Race 1 at Fitzwilliam Country Park

A fantastic start to the Peco XC league!

The women, newly promoted to the premier division, finished 2nd,only 17 pts behind Abbey Runners.  And Tracey, now only “allowed” to run off-road, finished second in the race behind fellow Welsh international Non Stanford, but since Non was running as a guest, Tracy took the coveted red number 1 tag.

The men’s team went one better and with 5 in the top 7 and the last counter at 36, dipped under 100 points whereas second placed Abbey scored over 200.

The only very slight disappointment was in the vets.  The women’s team needed one each of W35, W45 and W55, but with no W55, finished 5th.  The men needed 3*M40, 2*M50, 1*M60 and finished 7th.

All results on www.pecoxc.co.uk which also contains race instructions for race 2 Sunday 18 December at Middleton Park (back of John Charles Centre for Sport).  See you there!

Luton Marathon – report from Steve O

My son Paul ran his second marathon at Luton on 20-11-2011 to finish 2nd in 2.38.54 only 9 seconds slower than his London time on a hillier 3 lap course. He ran most of the way on his own with the winner doing 2.35. He is very pleased with the result as he was in two minds whether to compete due to a lot of missed training with an injury problem. He plans to do London and Berlin next year. I missed the race as I was on holiday in Nerja, Spain and only got back yesterday. His team mate has never broken 3 hours before and was desperate to do so bearing in mind he is a 1.17 half marathon runner. In 12 marathons he has always died in the later stages. I got Paul to guide him on the diet which he did for the first time and he was over the moon to run 2.55 feeling a lot stronger than normal towards the finish. One more p.b. for the coaching team!!!

Paul wanted to run the Chevin Chase as he is in Leeds for Christmas but has missed the entries. If anyone in the club has one spare let me know.

Message from Terry Massey at Up & Running

On Saturday 3rd December Up & Running is moving from Lands Lane, in central Leeds, to bigger and brighter premises at 38 Boar Lane  - it's just a couple of minutes' walk away.

At our Grand Opening this Saturday we're giving kit worth £40 away with shoes sold. Would you be kind enough to share the news with members of Valley Striders.
