Subject: V S Update - volunteering for Peco and other races, curry, pie'n'peas, beginners/improvers session, new parkruns, number swaps, 2 race reports/results, small ads

There’s a volunteering theme to this email – we need volunteers to help with four races between now and the end of June.  We’re starting beginners sessions at the end of March where 6 of our newly-trained leaders will be providing their services for free.  Also there are two new parkruns in the Leeds area asking for volunteers.  And some great news that the Cancer Research race where we helped last October has exceeded £100,000 in sponsorship money.  Read on …

Curry Night – Thursday 17 February

Meet Scott Hall 6:45 for a run and/or Sheesh Mahal (Chapel Allerton) at 8:30 for a curry

Pie and Peas - Tuesday 22 February

I think Paul White sent out an email a couple of weeks ago about food orders for Tuesday 22 February.

So just a reminder to order to [email protected]  by 10pm Sunday 20 February, selecting meat pie or vegetarian bake, mushy peas or baked beans, and whether you want apple pie (with ice cream).  Hope to see lots of you next Tuesday!

Peco XC league final race at Danefield - Sunday 6 March

The men are in second place in the premier (i.e. first) division with just an outside chance of winning the league, but only with the best team out.  The women are leading the first (i.e. second) division, are certain of promotion, but need a good team to win the league.  Please book this date.

Valley Striders are jointly organising the race with Airecentre Pacers.  We need 6 to 8 people to set up the course and 4 for entries administration, then 12 marshals.  We’re doing quite well for the set up and entries admin but definitely need some non-runners to marshal the race.  Please email [email protected] if you can help/

Northern 6/12 stage at Catterick - Sunday 20 March

Just got details about these races which unusually are on a Sunday, but are reasonably convenient for travel from Leeds, 11:30am start.  Can we get a men’s team of 12 and a ladies team of 6?  Please email [email protected] if you are interested.

Beginners and improvers session starts at Leos - Tuesday 29 March

Eight clubs in Leeds (including Valley Striders) are organising beginners and/or improvers sessions on weekday evenings, starting the last week in March.

There will be 12 weekly sessions leading up to the Jane Tomlinson Run for All 10k on Sunday 19 June.

If you have any friends just started running or have been running for a while and want to improve (but don’t want to join a club (yet)), let them know about this.

This is not yet on general release, but there is a website www.leedsathletics.net/runinleeds.htm where details will be confirmed over the next week or two.

Note that the sessions run from 6pm to 7pm, so we will be moving the regular Valley Striders session back a quarter of an hour to 7pm (OK I know that most of you think it starts at 7pm anyway!!)

Leeds Half Marathon – Sunday 8 May

As in the past 3 years, the running clubs from north and west Leeds are asked to provide marshals in their home territory.  We’ve again been allocated a section from north of Sheepscar interchange up as far as the centre of Meanwood.  We’ll have the Valley Striders banner out and it will be a good place for non-running Striders and families to watch the race.  If you can help on 8 May, please email [email protected].  Thanks!

Meanwood Trail Race - Saturday 28 May

We’ve finally settled on the date for the race, it will be late May bank holiday Saturday, 10:00 for the junior race and 10:30 for the senior race.

Marshals needed, email [email protected] if you are available.

NB will be trail weekend – Apperley Bridge Canter on the Thursday, us on the Saturday and Ilkley Trail on the Monday (NB Ilkley has been rescheduled from Sunday)

Yorkshire Vets Race at Leos – probably Tuesday 28 June

We need about 20 marshals for this, please book in your diary

Thank you

(NB this is regarding the Harewood 10k race where 11 Striders and 11 Abbeys marshalled last year)

Hi All

I just wanted to share my MASSIVE thank you and congratulations as our 2230 runners at the Harewood Run 10k event on 31st October have currently raised £101 500 and we are still receiving money every week.  This is a fantastic achievement and has now passed the event sponsorship target of £101 000, so thank you for all of your help and support for the event.

This money will help our doctors, scientists and nurses continue their research into lifesaving work and will contribute to helping more people beat cancer.

Kind Regards

Claire

Both of these races allow number swaps in advance – see www.ukresults.net for race details.

Rombalds Stride race report from John Wallace

After lots of shenanigans finding race numbers for people earlier in the week after the ever popular Stride had filled up, the weather on Thursday and Friday induced a strong feeling of ‘WHY’? Fortunately by Saturday morning the wind and rain had both eased off for a brief 4 hour window of opportunity, and we set off on the 21/22/23/25 mile route (select depending on which article you read) from Guiseley to Baildon Moor, Rombalds Moor and finally Otley Chevin (thank you organizers, a fine sting in the tail!).

Conditions underfoot can be described in one word – wet, two words would be very wet, three words … well, you get the picture. Snorkels and flippers would not have been out of place as every uphill track had turned into a river, and every stream had turned into a raging torrent. Plunging knee deep into water became normal and helping shorter people over ‘babbling brooks’ common place. I can’t think of another race with such terrible conditions - even the snow and ice 2 years ago was preferable.

In all this we struggled gamely on with the camaraderie of lunatics, greeted along the way by many cheerful and smiling marshals taking our numbers and feeding us with cake and tea, and encouraged on by fellow runners and spectators(!). It was as always a terrific fun event. I can’t emphasise enough how good the marshals are and how wonderful the refreshments stops  - it’s a fantastic effort by all concerned.

And even better, on struggling to the dining area afterwards, there were Peter and Joyce, showing all the Striders to a seat and running off to get us cups of tea, dinner and dessert. Simply grand. Thanks very much guys.

Small ads

NB Someone else sent me another “small ad” about a week ago but I’ve mislaid it, so please re-send

Brighton hotel accommodation

Do you have any club members who are doing Brighton this year?  If so, do they have accommodation booked?  Or perhaps someone would like to go down to soak up the atmosphere?  I’ve had to drop out of the race (too late to transfer number) and have pre-paid for a double room at Brighton Seafront Travelodge for nights of 8th, 9th and 10th April.  If you think anyone might be interested in the room, please pass on my details.

Many thanks,

Lizzie M.

Three Peaks entry wanted

I tried to enter the three peaks race this year, but unfortunately missed the boat and am on a waiting list now. I'm really keen to run it again and wanted to let you know that if you hear of any club members who have already entered it, who want to pull out, I would be happy to act as a substitute runner.

Thanks for your help with this

Study of motivation

I am a sports student currently studying at York St John University and alongside a member of staff I am conducting a piece of research that is part of a series examining the influence of perfectionism on the motivation of athletes.  We would like to invite Valley Striders to be a part of this study, by members of the club who are running in upcoming 10k events filling out a simple questionnaire. You will find an attachment on this email which will give you further details about the study and what is involved. Please contact myself if you are interested in taking part or if you have a telephone contact on which I can further discuss this opportunity with you.

What’s the project about?

The study is part of a series examining the influence of perfectionism on the motivation of athletes. A brief overview of the study is provided below.

It is currently unclear whether perfectionism is a desirable characteristic for athletes to possess. While some have suggested perfectionism should be encouraged, others have suggested it should be managed. The commitment to exceptionally high standards associated with perfectionism is believed to have considerable motivational benefits. However, the harsh self-criticism that also typically accompanies perfectionism is likely to undermine the well-being of athletes. There is current little relationship that has examined the relationship between perfectionism and athlete performance. The findings of this research suggest that in perfectionism may promote both performance improvements and decrements, depending on the circumstances. The purpose of the study is to begin to address this issue by examining whether facets of perfectionism predict and performance in competitive runners.

What’s required?

We would like the members of your club to complete a short questionnaire that will measure their perfectionistic tendencies and a prediction of their performance in a future competition. Then, with their permission, we would like to contact them after the competition to record their actual performance. The questionnaire will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. Pens, questionnaires and prepaid return envelopes will be provided.

What’s in it for you?

The findings of the project will be made available in a written report for you and your members. Your club will also be acknowledged in any presentations of the findings.
