Subject: V S Update - Events to enter now, 2011 XC, 2011 Grand Prix, Peco XC, Subs, WYXC report, flat share, garmin

Enter in the next 2 or 3 days or miss it

We have 4 events in this category

Baildon Boundary Way half marathon on Sunday 10 April.  This is part of our 2011 Grand Prix but only takes 400 entries and as of last night was over 80% full.  It’s only £12 to enter and entries are transferable so it’s worth entering even if you’re only a “probable”.  Lovely scenic route although there are mixed opinions about the 4 miles of canal towpath – road runners think it’s great, fell runners hate it.  Get your entry in at http://www.runbritain.com/onlineentry and put “Baildon” in the search.

Yorkshire Cross Country Championships on Sunday 9 January.  This no longer clashes with the Peco XC (see Peco section below).  Entries to Drew Taylor by next Tuesday 14 December (see XC section below).

Valley Striders Xmas Do and Presentation Night on Friday 17 December.  We now have over 40 bookings, maximum is about 70, price is £9.50 per person for an all-you-can-eat buffet meal.  There will be a selection of hot and cold meats, meat and vegetarian pasta dishes, potatoes, salads and followed by various seasonal desserts.  As usual, when booking say whether you’d like carnivore or vegetarian.  If you’re going to sample the vegetarian section, please book “half-and-half” otherwise (from previous experience) the veg. dishes will run out.  Please book by emailing  [email protected] You will receive an auto-reply stating how to make payment.  Payment must be made by Tuesday 14 December.  Oh, and I was asked this week about “dress code”, the answer is smartish casual - ties have been seen occasionally but never a ball gown (put yours back in the wardrobe, Holly).

London Marathon – final reminder that to get your name in the ballot for one of the four club places, you must email me by Tuesday 14 December.  There are 6 names so far – check http://valleystriders.org.uk/vslondon.htm

Next Tuesday – Track Training at Carnegie

Likely to be on - please check on the Striders website on Monday evening.

2011 Grand Prix

There were 12 Striders at Leos on Tuesday involved in the discussion of races for the Grand Prix for 2011.  Paul White says “Thank you all for your contributions”

We have a provisional list of races, these are subject just to checking that there aren’t two on the same day or that a race doesn’t clash with a major championship or relay that we’re likely to be involved in.

This list is now on the website – click the top tab “Club Information” and then the link on the left for “Grand Prix and Fell Championship”.  Someone asked which races are in which category, a good question, because you want to know whether the Wharfedale Marathon is in the “fell/trail” category or in the “long” category, so this year there is an indicator for this.  There are 6 categories and you need to run at least one race in 5 of the categories if you want to avoid penalty points.

Three races are already full – Chevin Chase, Brass Monkey and London - but we are expecting that a good contingent of Striders have already entered these.

The Baildon Boundary Way is also included  www.baildonrunners.webeden.co.uk  but you do need to enter this weekend to guarantee your entry.

Leaflets are out for the Sheffield Half on Sunday 8 May.  Don’t enter it!  It’s the same day as the Leeds Half.

Peco Race 2 & 3

Race information and course maps for the second race of the season (Middleton Park, Sun 19th Dec) are at http://www.pecoxc.co.uk/pages/race2.html (or for the full website, click  www.pecoxc.co.uk )

Please note that we can’t use the car parks at South Leeds Stadium, as there is a swimming gala on: follow the instructions in the race info.

Other important notes (i) the course is NOT suitable for spikes, and (ii) mince pies will be provided after the race.  The Senior race entry fee will be £2.50

If the weather takes a turn for the worse, check the Peco XC website to see whether it is on.

In the first race, our men’s team and ladies’ team both finished 3rd, but with a full turnout we have a good chance of winning both leagues.

This may be the day after the day after the Striders Xmas Do, but it’s the day immediately after Abbey’s Xmas Do so let’s get ahead of them before they recover!

Note that the date of Race 3 at Kirkstall has changed from Jan 9th to Jan 16th. This is to avoid clashing with the Yorkshire and Humberside XC Championships.

Also put in your diaries the final two races – 30 January at John Smeaton (my award for the best food for 2 years running) and 6 March on Otley Chevin.

Vote Jess

UK Athletics have emailed to ask me to vote for Jess Ennis for BBC Sports Personality of the Year.  You could too!

Subs

If you’ve not paid, you’ll have had a reminder last week from Paul White.  Even if you’re not going to renew, please reply!  But we’d much prefer it if you do decide to renew.

I do know who has resigned but have not yet updated my distribution lists, so apologies that I’m still sending you emails – this is a task for the Xmas holiday week.

Thirsk 10

According to their website Thirsk has definitely been rearranged for 27th March – old numbers must be kept.

John Schofield says “Thirsk 10 Mile Road Race (N. Yorks, 28/11/10). This is now rescheduled to be held on Sunday 27th March 2011. November's issued numbers remain valid. Online entry has re-opened for new entrants. www.ukresults.net No Fun in March 2011 though, sorry!”

Final West Yorks XC (report from Jerry Watson)

Firstly the Striders successes over the 4 races:

  • Tony Haygarth - 3rd M60
  • Malcolm Coles - 2nd M65+
  • Jerry Watson - 3rd M50.

The course was still covered in snow but was beginning to show grass in places by the time the men got to do their 5 laps. Major changes to the normal courses due to sledgers (no, not verbals from Australians placed strategically around the shouting "Jerry, you're running rubbish") meant that you did the first short hill after the start, but then did a U-turn and came straight back down the slope that you normally approach the finish on, before doing a flat loop around their concert area. I guess most people were just glad that the health & safety police hadn't stopped the event going ahead.

Only 1 Strider lady made the long journey to Wakefield (where was everyone?)

(1st Julie Briscoe (Wakefield) 20.13) - she did 34.40 at the Abbey Dash following her 2:40 Toronto Marathon.

10th Katie Parry 23.22

Men did slightly better but not a full team either,

(1st. Andrew Pearson (Longwood) 30.34). Won all 4 races, as befits the 1995 European XC bronze medallist.

52nd Steve Webb 36.16

61st Jerry Watson 37.01

91st Drew Taylor 39.04

132nd Malcolm Coles 46.00

134th Tony Haygarth 46.49

I have Tony's & Malcolm's plaques.
