Subject: V S Update - LCW, Handicap, Harewood 10, WYXC, AV Handicap
Report, Results, Reports
Sorry, it’s been two weeks since the last V S Update –
if you thought you’d missed one, you haven’t.
And particular apologies to Tom Button, as the first
item is rather late notice.
Striders night out – Friday 27 August
Tom Button emailed
There's a Striders night out in Headingley on Friday 27th
August.
Plan is to meet in
[email protected]
or 07815-616-895 if you need more information
Thursday Training – 2 September
First Thursday in the month, so a slightly slower,
slightly shorter session, probably with more stops.
If you have friends thinking of joining a running
club, recommend this session to them. Meet Scott Hall 6:45pm.
LCW – Sunday 5 September
GOOD NEWS: There seems to have been a recce every day
and some days more than one. John Wallace has led 5 or 6 recces and
BAD NEWS: We’ve lost 5 runners in the last week
due to injury so we’re now down to 58 confirmed runners, 2 short of 5 full
teams. If you’re available on 5 Sept, please contact me on this email
address [email protected]
ARRANGEMENTS FOR THE DAY: will be sent out the middle
of next week. I’ll be sending out estimated start times and your leg
captains will be ensuring there are cars in the right places. The leg
captains will also have all 10 numbers for the 5 teams on their leg – you need
to bring 4 safety pins and £8!
Club Handicap and Pie & Peas – Tuesday 7 September
Date confirmed – meet 6:50pm PROMPT down by Eccup
Reservoir. If it’s a light evening it will be 10k otherwise 5 miles.
If you want food afterwards, book at [email protected] by 10pm
Sunday 5 September, saying whether you want

Harewood 10 – Sunday 3 October
If you’re in running shops, sports centres, or
anywhere(!) and see entry forms with 10 October, please pick them up, then
contact me and I’ll arrange to re-stock
There are several local races at the end of August and
during September where we need a couple of Striders to stand at the end of the
finishing funnel handing out new entry forms, and telling runners that the date
has changed. So far I only have 3 volunteers in total
Can you help on one of these dates?
And of course we need marshals on the day – 60 of
you! – email me if you can help [email protected] check http://valleystriders.org.uk/vsmarshals.htm
And if we have “too many” marshals this will allow
some Striders to run – first to volunteer to marshal will be given the
option to run.
Finally, advanced notice that there will be a
“Harewood Recce Run” on the evening of Tuesday 21 September instead of our
session from Leos. We’ll meet at Harewood Village Hall for our session –
a faster group will run 8 miles and a slower group 5½ miles. NB you’ll
need a head torch if you want to run the full 10.
West Yorks XC – closing date 9 September
The following is a repeat of the item 2 weeks ago as
so far only 5 Striders have applied!
The dates have now been announced for the “Complete
Runner West Yorkshire Cross Country League” to give it its full title,
henceforth known by us as WYXC.
Race 1: Sun 10th October @
Race 2: Sat 30th October @ Fartown ,
Race 3: Sat 20th November @ Bramley Fall Woods,
Race 4: Sun 5th December @
Entries for the first race are required by Thursday 9
September. There are no entries on the day. It costs £8 whether you
enter one race or all four (not bad £2 per race!), so it would help our admin
if you entered now even if you can’t run the first race.
To enter, please email a special address [email protected]
. Check your entry at http://valleystriders.org.uk/vsteams.htm
Cancer Research 10k at Harewood Sunday 31 October
12 marshals needed – free bacon sandwich and hot drink
- more details to follow.

The race winner, Rob Hope, ran 13:59, the race was a
grade “A” (i.e. steep), so Dan scored 13:59 / 19:24 * 100 * 1.1 = 79.3 points.
Including Dan’s Grand Prix points, that works out at
9.2 points per minute of running, which I believe to be a club record!
Great
Congratulations to Chloe Hudson, 3rd in the

Because of your plea to get in top 20 I became a first

we do for Valley Striders!
PS I was the only one wearing my club vest too!!

Well I survived, just... It was the perfect weather for a
race
It started with two laps of a 750 metre lake swim with a 10 metre run
in-between for the spectators - it was a tight twisty course that didn't really
allow the field to break up, it was manic - there was kicking, punching,
dunking, lost goggles, people swimming over the top of others the whole course,
it was awesome but not a place for the faint hearted or weak swimmer!!!
In to transition for a quick change out of my wetsuit and straight out on to
the flat but breezy 40km bike course on quiet country roads (averaged 34km per
hour).
Back in to transition, a second quick change, grab a gel and out for a 10km run
again on quiet country roads - the first section was made worse by a pain in my
shin which disappeared at 3km allowing me to pick up the pace for the run
in.
Finished 96th out of 200 starters
