Striders Dates

Tue 29 June – usual training 6:45 pm from Leos

Thu 1 July – training  6:45 pm from Scott Hall Sport Centre – including beginners and slower runners

From John Wallace:

Having had a chat with the Thursday runners last night, we agreed on the idea of a gentle run of 5-6 miles at around 9.30 to 10 minute mile pace, lots of rests as always, and walking up any steep slopes.

Plan will be to run to and through Potternewton Park and then on to Gledhow Valley. There will be plenty of options for shortening/lengthening the run as appropriate.

We’ll aim to finish by running back in from the top of Chapel A, which has the benefit of making the last half mile + flat or downhill (at which stage we could also let the faster runners go for a sprint back)

Tue 6 July – training 6:45 pm from Leos and lasagne

Book at [email protected] stating whether you want meat or vegetarian lasagne and whether you also want apple pie and ice cream

Thu 8 July – normal training  6:45 pm from Scott Hall – 7 to 8 miles at 8 to 9 minute mile pace

Tue 13 July – training at Leeds Met track, meet 7:00 pm at Indoor Sports Centre

Thu 15 July – normal training  6:45 pm from Scott Hall followed by curry at (details to follow)

Tue 20 July - club handicap and pie & peas, meet by Reservoir at 6:50pm prompt.  This will be 5¼ miles mixed terrain, all good tracks unless we get a deluge the night before.  This will also be a selection race for the Leeds Country Way teams, so come along if you can.  By the way, 1½ miles of this route is on LCW leg 5.

Tue 17 August – possible date for Abbey Runners & Valley Striders handicap race and barbecue – more details to follow

Sun 5 SeptemberLeeds Country Way – we now have 4½ teams so the target of 5 teams is well in sight.  Whatever your speed, providing you’re capable of running 10 miles, please put your name forward.  Initial team selection will take place on 13 July so please reply in next 10 days.

Harewood Trail Race – Sunday 10 October

I’ve managed to rearrange the Harewood Trail Race not to clash with the first race in the West Yorks XC league, but in doing so have clashed with at least 3 other races in Yorkshire – the Woodland Challenge at Huddersfield, a Yorkshire Vets race at Skipton and the Shaun Lee Johnstone race at Boroughbridge.

So we’ll need lots of publicity to bring runners in to our race.  If you are going to a race, can you help by handing out our race entry forms (or putting them on car windscreens)?  Or can you put entry forms in local sports centres?  Or in schools?  Please email me if you can help!

Help requested at Leeds 10k Run For All – Sunday 4 July

NB this is not an official V S request and if you do want to help but wish to donate “your” £10 (see below) to the Jane Tomlinson fund rather than Valley Striders, feel free to do so.

From Marie Rymer of “Run for All”:

I have been asked to contact you by Graeme Hodgson who is the Events Director for the Leeds 10k which takes place on Sunday 4th July 2010.

Please accept our sincere apologies for giving you such short notice but it has only come to light that no one may have been in touch earlier with regards to asking if you are still able to provide volunteers as you have kindly done in previous years with the Event?

I would therefore be very grateful if you are able to assist and as a way of a thank you I am pleased to confirm that for every volunteer we will donate £10 to Valley Striders AC.

Thank you for your ongoing support and I look forward to hearing from you I would be grateful if you could reply to the following email address [email protected]

Message from Mark Hetherington re Junior Races at Eccup on July 11 – NB pre-entry only

I am contacting you to ask if you would kindly let your junior members (or interested children of your senior members) know about the 1 and 2 mile ‘Junior Athletes’ road races that Abbey Runners are organising in conjunction with the Eccup 10 mile senior race on Sunday July 11th.

The 1 mile race is open to juniors aged 8 – 10, whereas the 2 mile race is for juniors aged 11 – 16. The race entry form and the race information are available on the Abbey Runners web site (www.abbeyrunners.co.uk).

These races are ‘pre entry’ only; the closing date for the receipt of entries is Monday 5th July. There is also a ‘fun run’, which is open to all ages and may be entered on the day.

Message from Jenny Cooper, Yorkshire Vets Fixtures Secretary

Dear Geoff/Sylvia

Just to say thank you very much for putting on another fantastic effort on Tuesday.  Valley Striders always put on a good race and lovely spread of sarnies afterwards. Hope everything went well from your end.

The Vets Committee and I are very grateful for clubs hosting races – please pass on our thanks to your club members.

Grade 10 for Lou Gilchrist

Lou has achieved her first Grade 10 performance in 2010 at the Manchester Heaton Park parkrun with a time of 26:33 for the 5k, worth 95.33%

Rowing a marathon – from Hetta Morath of Abbey Runners

This is to let you know that I have decided to celebrate turning 70 on July 14th, by rowing a marathon on the indoor rower. You probably know that Colin was diagnosed last year with a brain tumour, so I have decided to use the occasion to raise money for the brain tumour charity Andrea's Gift. www.andreasgift.org.uk Colin will be supporting me at the new Armley Sports Centre, and if you feel able to sponsor me, I would be really grateful. You can do this easily via my just giving page, www.justgiving.com/Hetta-Morath   Many thanks

John Lunn of Leeds City

Some of you will know the name, some will know the voice, some will have seen the man with the bobble hat cheering and cajoling Leeds City runners at various cross country events, some will have looked on the Leeds City website and seen the weekly reports from “The Scribe” where every Leeds City athlete seemed to get a mention if they’d competed that week.  Not many of us knew that John was also a 2:20 marathon runner or a veteran field events athlete.

Sadly, John died in his sleep on Monday night.  He will be missed by all of Leeds City and many others in Yorkshire.  Read about John at http://www.leedscityathleticclub.org/
