Striders Events

Vets race marshals – Tuesday 22 June

We’re just about OK for marshals, but if a few more of you volunteer then a few more Striders can run in the race.  Please arrive for 6:45 and make yourselves known to Geoff and Sylvia (they’ll be in front of the clubhouse).  NB if you want to run, bring your Striders vest!

Thursday training – Thursday 1 July

The first Thursday in the month has been designated a session to specially cater for newcomers and slower runners, but will also be suitable for our regular runners.

The session on 1 July will start as normal from Scott Hall Sports Centre at 6:45, and from there we’ll run just under a mile down to Potternewton Park.

Xanthe says that the full lap round the Park is three-quarters of a mile so there are plenty of opportunities for a varied session within the park e.g.

  • faster runners could run a large lap while slower runners run a shorter lap, or
  • faster runners could run a slow lap alongside the slower runners (who’d actually be running a fast lap for them), then faster runners run a fast lap while slower runners recover
  • etc

Before you complain about running laps of a park, I’d like to point out that several Striders have already run more than 50 laps of a park this year (Hyde Park, Saturday mornings!)

If you’re a regular Thursday runner, look out for John or Sharon’s email nearer the date.  If you’re new to Thursday running, look on the front page of the website or email John [email protected]

Kettlewell Fell Race – Sunday 4 July (information from Steve Webb)

The next scoring race in the Fell Champs is an "A Short" at Kettlewell on Sunday 4 July. This is the final race in the Wharfedale Triple T, a 3 day festival of running in the Dales.

Friday night is an uphill only road race of 3 miles (950').

Saturday is an "A Medium" fell race around and over Great Whernside 12.5 miles (3,000') and is heartily recommended.

This is a great event with a really good atmosphere; all races start in Kettlewell, you can camp for the weekend in the parking field and they have a barbecue on the go. Prizes in usual categories for individual races, but mainly for the weekend series.  A few years ago Valley Striders won the series team prize ahead of Bingley Harriers; would be nice if we could get a man, a lady, and a vet to run all 3 races and challenge for the title again.

Pie & Peas Tuesday 6 July AND Leeds Hyde Park 5k Wednesday 7 July

Advanced warning of pie and peas night, or is it lasagne – check the website later this week.

Then the following evening is the Hyde Park 5k, Grand Prix points at stake.

Summer Handicap Tuesday 20 July  AND Golden Acre Relay Wednesday 21 July

Advanced warning of Summer Handicap which will be our trail route of 5¼ miles from the Reservoir, across the fields to Eccup, along footpaths to Emmerdale, along footpaths to the water treatment works, and across the dam and along footpaths back to the start.

Then the following evening it is the Golden Acre Park Relay, teams of three, each run one lap of 2½ miles.  See http://www.abbeyrunners.co.uk/Races/golden.html for details.  Make up a team with 2 friends or use the Valley Striders Forum to find team members for the night.

Leeds Country Way – Sunday 5 September

There are now 40 of you wanting to run so we’ve set a new target to get 5 teams i.e. 60 runners.  If we achieve it, we will be the first club to have done so.

We’ll enter a men's team, a women's team and a veterans' team which will be selected on the basis of ability.

We will also enter a 4th team (and hopefully a 5th team, too) which will be selected on the basis of first come first served.  The first 12 (or 24) who apply and who are not selected for the other teams will become the 4th (and 5th) team.  If members of the "first 12 (or 24)" are selected for a team, these teams will be completed by the next in order of application (like taking a ticket at the supermarket delicatessen).

NB for political correctness we will call our 4th and 5th teams "B" and "C".

I know it’s over 2 months away and things can change a lot in that time, but with 5 teams we will need a considerable amount of preparation.

So please reply in the next week so we can get a view of the likely teams.  Please reply “Yes”, “Probably”, “Possibly” or “No”.  Even if you’ve never run 10 miles before, it shouldn’t stop you from signing up!

Holmfirth Urban Orienteering – Sunday 4 July

From Guy Goodair, East Pennine Orienteering Club

We were wondering if any of your members would like to try an urban orienteering race. This is a new race round the streets of Holmfirth on July 4th. Each competitor gets a dibber to record his progress than after 'dibbing' at the start (which records their start time) they then pick up a map showing where they are and they have to visit  a number of controls around the town - each runner is free  to choose their own route round the streets and ginnels of Holmfirth. It's not always the fastest runner who win but the one choosing the quickest route  I'm enclosing further details of the event which I'd be grateful if you would pass the information onto your members or they can access the information from our club's website at http://www.eastpennineoc.org.uk/2010events/100604Holmfirth/100604_Holmfirth.html

English and Northern 5k Championships – Sunday 11 July

This is being held at Blackburn.  Entries close on 4 July.  Are you tempted by the winner’s prize of £400 or the £200 for breaking the course record (14:08 for men, 15:50 for women). Entries via www.ukresults.net

Results

Busy week for Malcolm Coles

Jerry Watson emailed me

You had a line reporting on Malcolm Coles's efforts in the Chevin fell race. His efforts over the days prior to that should be recorded (even if the first event was not in Valley colours)

  • Sat / Sun May 29th/30th - The Heart of Scotland 100 miles (actually 104 miles) - 30 hours 29 minutes (finishing 6.30 pm Sunday night)
  • Tuesday June 1st - Yorkshire Vets Grand Prix @ Kirkstall -  124th in 51.55
  • Wednesday June 2nd - Chevin Fell Race @ Otley 66th - 27.04

Do you award anything at the end of the year for this kind of ********* effort? (insert your own appropriate adjective!)

Bradford Millennium Way Relay

Leg

1. Ian Sanderson & Sue Sunderland   1:37:23 (32) 1:37:23 (32)

2. Bob Jackson & Chloe Hudson       1:37:11 (33) 3:14:34 (30)

3. Dan Murray & Lisa Wilyman        1:07:07 (15) 4:21:41 (26)

4. John Wallace & Amanda Seims      1:23:36 (21) 5:45:17 (25)

5. Tim Towler & Liz Wood            1:37:30 (30) 7:22:47 (24)

Final position 24th (out of 48), finished 4th mixed team (out of 8).

Dan and Lisa were spotted by the race organiser cutting straight across two fields rather than using the path round the edges.  The short cut was judged to be worth 1 to 2 minutes and they were penalised a total of 3 minutes.  Despite this, they still managed to beat the previous mixed team record for leg 3 by over 2 minutes.  This record was set in the first race in 2002 by our own Paul Furness and Kathy Kaiser.

Lisa still holds (with Steve Webb) the course record for a Mixed team on leg 1 of 1:18:55.  Who wants to run with Lisa next year?

The other records still held by Valley Striders are Leg 2 (mixed) Brian Hanley & Sam Harris 1:18:59 and Overall Vets team 6:18:30.

Our best mixed team time of 6:57:19 in 2003 has now been relegated to 4th place in the all time rankings.

The club positions included

 1. Pudsey & Bramley   5:38:05

 2. Bingley            5:38:49

 3. Keighley           5:40:27

 9. Horsforth          6:25:04  1st vets

14. Accrington         6:49:20  1st mixed

20. Keighley ladies    7:04:31  1st ladies

Thanks to everyone who ran, also to our reserves who stood by patiently but were not required.

Settle Hills (from Steve Webb)

A very hot and sunny day for the Settle Hills race.  Another strong run for Holly who was second lady behind Jo Waites of the inaccurately-named (in the results) Calder Valley Striders and 19th overall.

With an initial steep drag out of Settle and the ascent of Attermire Scar onto the grassland plateau I spent a lot of the race in a very tidy 2nd place overall.  But on the return journey through lanes and fields I faded slightly and was duly caught by a small pack, ending up 8th.

Other Striders scoring points for both Fell Champs and VSGP were John Marsham 25th, John Wallace 51st and Steve Dixon 56th.

With the results of Settle we have two changes of leader in the Fell Champs: Steve now leads the Mens' table and Holly has taken a clear lead in the Ladies' category.

Updated league for VSFC and VSGP will be on the website later in the week.

Ennerdale Fell Race (from Steve Webb)

Steve Dixon flew the flag for Valley Striders in the very tough Ennerdale race so has scored in the "Any A Long" category.  You know it was a tough race when Rob Jebb of Bingley Harriers won in 3 hours 34 minutes!
