Peco Presentation Afternoon, Barbecue and Pecolympics

Message from Mark Hetherington, league organiser

We are intending to hold a league presentation afternoon this year for a change. The date will be Sunday 16th May, from 2.00pm onwards. The venue will be Leo’s Rugby Club (just off King Lane in Alwoodley – where the Meanwood Valley Trail race is based).

The plan is to hold a sports day (aka The PECOlympics) for the senior runners (including events such as the sack race, 3-legged race, egg and spoon race, tug of war, etc.) and a short XC race for the juniors during the afternoon, followed by a BBQ at about 4.30pm and the team and individual prize presentations immediately afterwards. The bar will be open during the BBQ and presentations!

The cost of the BBQ will be £6 per head and it will include steak, chicken, sausages, potatoes and salad (with a ‘proper’ vegetarian alternative). Having been to a BBQ at Leo’s before, I can testify to both the quality and quantity of the food provided! The BBQ will be ‘ticket only’ and we will need to know definite numbers (and receive payment) by the end of April. Club members are welcome to attend the sports day and presentations without buying a BBQ ticket, if they prefer not to do so.

If you are interested, book this date in your diary, more information in next V S Update.

London Marathon

Good luck to our runners at London next Sunday

And if you want to be in the ballot for 2011, look at the Virgin London Marathon website http://www.virginlondonmarathon.com/ around race day.

I’ve gleaned from one of the Runners World forums (so not necessarily reliable)
·                2011 race is on Sunday 17 April
·                If you were rejected in 2009 or 2010, the online ballot opens on Monday 19 April 2010
·                If you are a “new” applicant, the online ballot opens on Tuesday 4 May

The first London Marathon

Thanks to Otley AC website for the following link

In the first programme of the BBC Radio 4 spring series of The Reunion, Sue MacGregor revisits 1981 and the first running of the London Marathon.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00rqkr7/The_Reunion_First_London_Marathon/

Before the London Marathon, long-distance running in Britain was the exclusive domain of elite athletes. Two former British Olympic athletes Chris Brasher and John Disley were inspired by the New York Marathon, and the jogging boom of the 1970's, and decided to set about organizing a marathon through the streets of London. With almost seven thousand runners participating in the first race, marathon running was suddenly on the map.

Sue is joined around the table by: David Bedford, current Race Director and former 10,000 metre world record holder; John Disley, an original founder and bronze medal Olympic steeplechase winner; John Bryant, journalist and marathon historian; Hugh Jones, course measurer and the first British man to win the London Marathon in 1982; and Veronique Marot, the second British woman to win, setting a British women's record in 1989.

Train tickets to London Marathon – from Jerry Watson

Cheap train tickets to London & back! Due to offspring finding better things to do than watch me, I have 1 adult and 1 child tickets available on the following trains:

Friday 23rd April dep 16:40 (arrives 18:54)
Sunday 25th April dep 15:10 (arrives 17:32)

As they were purchased well in advance on a Family & Friends Railcard they are non-refundable. Any taker would have to travel in close proximity to family Watson I'm afraid. If any of the tickets (there and/or back) are any use to anyone then get in touch ( [email protected] ).
