Max's funeral will be Friday 26 March at 1pm at
Lawnswood Cemetery, Otley Road, LS16
7PH followed by a wake at Leos, LS17
5PR , all welcome.
Please email [email protected] if

We already have a dozen tributes to Max or stories
about Max on the website www.valleystriders.org.uk/maxjones.htm
. Please email me your tribute or story and I will update the website -
Max’s family are reading this page regularly. We also have more facts,
more photos and more links about Max, including a link to an article in
Thursday’s Yorkshire Evening Post, so take a look at the webpage.
Run 100km for Max on the morning of Friday 26 March
Max
had a 1.9 mile (3km) lap from his house that he used for most of his training
runs. If he wanted to run a tempo run of 10k, he ran 3 laps; for 10 miles he
ran 5 laps; I believe he even occasionally ran 10 laps for 20 miles.
We
plan to run (or walk) some laps between 10:30 and 11:30 on Friday morning. If
10 of us ran 3 laps and 4 of us walked 1 lap, this would be just over 100km. If
more turned up, we could total a bit more, maybe 191km for Max’s world 24 hour
record!
We'll
meet in the car park by Oakwood Clock at 10:20 (if the car park is full, park
in Somerfield car park or on Prince's Avenue).
We'll
then all do one lap together, then it will be up to you how many more laps you
do (should be plenty of time for 3 laps in total, speedy runners might do 4.).
Here's
a map
of the lap - "Map My Run" says it's 1.91 miles or 3.07km.
If
we run for about an hour, then drive 10 minutes to Leos for changing and
showers, allow half an hour an hour, then 10 minutes to get to Lawnswood, we'll
be there with half an hour to spare.

This is a
50 mile relay for teams of 10 i.e. 5 legs run in pairs. It’s like the
terrain for the Calderdale Way Relay but much nicer because it’s in
Summer. Or like the best bits of the Leeds Country Way Relay with some
“easy” fell running and no housing estates.
And it’s

Between
2002 and 2005 we won the mixed team prize every year, and in 2006 we won the
vets team. Maybe we can win the mixed or vets team again or alternatively
challenge for the men’s or women’s team prizes.

the early May and then organise recce runs.

Visibility
was much better than at the Trog so routefinding was easy. Winter Hill
stands above Rivington reservoir and country park and is by no means a
huge mountain at 456m. However the race route resembles the trail of a
demented lemming, with numerous climbs to the summit followed by plunging
descents. So it was well worthy of category A status and there was a
strong field.
There
were no soft points on offer as British Champion Rob Hope broke the course
record by 3 minutes. In our part of the field we found it tougher going,
particularly the descents on frozen tussock grass. The course was just
short enough for Steve to hold off the late challenge of Eirik. Aled had
a good run, just missing the 2 hour barrier. Malcolm was reliable as
ever for 3rd M65 and Geoff showed improving running form and found all the
checkpoints.
Thanks to
Sylvia for cheering us on our way from on high.

Position 825 Paul O’Callaghan 53:24 running for Tadworth
Athletic Club.
He was the only runner from the club and like me he does
not like the wet slippery surface but enjoyed the event. He started running
about six months ago after being a footballer and was recovering from a knee
ligament injury. He is really enjoying his running now and is slowly increasing
his mileage from about 30 miles a week for the forthcoming road season.

It was Striders one-two on Woodhouse Moor today with Gwil
first and Daniel McHugh second. Gwil now has more Leeds Parkrun wins than
any other runner.
55 Striders have run a Parkrun, read about it at www.parkrun.com and put Saturday 1 May in your
diary as this has been scheduled for a club mass race.
