Subject: V S Update - Events for September & October, new Strider

This Striders Update highlights events for the next two months (also some in the rest of the year).  There will be another Striders Update out soon with race results including Grand Prix and Fell Championship races, and not forgetting the results of the Abbey Valley team handicap which had 76 runners and 70 barbecuers.

But first a reminder that next Tuesday is the first Tuesday of the new month, so it must be that we meet 6:45 at Leos, then 3 by 10 mins by the Res.  And it must be food afterwards, which this month will be lasagne. There are meat and vegetarian versions of lasagne, both at £3, and optional apple pie with optional ice cream at £1.50.  Please email me by 10am Monday stating whether you want veggie or meat lasagne, and whether you want the apple pie.

And before we go into the events information, let me allow Jonny Hulme (Lisa Wilyman’s partner) introduce you to the newest Strider

Just a quickie to say that Lisa & I have welcomed our first baby to the world! :o)  'He' (name not 100% decided as yet, but after spending some time getting to know him, Rory's looking like a strong contender) was born at St. James's hospital in Leeds on Friday 14th, at 7.32pm, weighing 8lb 6oz .. although a bit of a roller-coaster of a birth for Lisa, both she and baby are mighty fine!  He's absolutely gorgeous, and we're both on cloud nine :o)  We're loving being parents for the first time.

We also moved house from Levenshulme (Manchester) to Horsforth in Leeds in the same week, hence it's been just a tad manic! (Unbeknown to her at the time, Lisa was actually in the early stages of labour whilst travelling with me across the M62 with yet another car-full of stuff!)  Taking a breather for a few weeks now though, before putting Lisa's house on the market with the aim of moving into them-there hills between Manchester and Leeds, to settle and create a long-term family home.

If I haven't been in contact for a while with anyone reading this, please do send a reply .. I'd love to catch up with you :o)

I've attached just a few piccies for you to check out..

Harewood 10 mile Trail Race and 2 mile Junior Race / Adult Fun Run – Sunday 4 October (and recce run Tue 15 September)

Entries are now picking up – we have over 120 for the senior race and 12 for the 2 mile.

We will have a recce run from Harewood Village Hall on Tuesday 15 September.  We’ll meet ready to run at 6:45.  The evenings are too dark for the full 10 miles.  We’ll run the first mile and a half together.  After this, we’ll split into two groups, one doing just over 8 miles, the other just over 5 miles.

Look at www.valleystriders.org.uk/trail.htm for details of the Harewood Trail Race (includes maps).

Profits this year will be shared beween Lineham Farm and Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

The races are on Sunday 4 October.  We need about 70 marshals and currently have 15; please email if you are able to help

Harlow Carr 5k Fun Run – Friday 11 September

Harlow Carr, near Harrogate, is the northern garden in the Royal Horticultural Society (Wisley is the famous one in the south).

They are building a new educational centre and have already raised £2.4 million of the £3 million required

The run is a new event to publicise the education centre and hopefully raise a small amount towards the centre.

They need a few race marshals.  Please email me if you want to help (You get free entry to the Gardens and maybe something from Betty’s Café in a goody bag).

Or if you want to run then register on http://www.rhs.org.uk/whatson/gardens/harlowcarr/index.asp   It’s only £7.50 and you get free entry to the gardens (and maybe something from Betty’s Café in a goody bag).

Northern Road Relay – Saturday 27 September

This takes place at Leeds Carnegie.  A men’s team (including 2 reserves) has been selected but runners and reserves are required for the women’s team.  Supporters are also required.  More details to follow.

Yorkshire Vets Relay – Sunday 28 September

This takes place at Ilkley - the route is 2.9 miles undulating.  Teams are in the following age-groups – M35, M40, M50, M60, M70, W35, W45, W55.  It is 4 runners per team for M35 and M40, and 3 runners per team for the rest.  £4 per person.

If you want to run, please let me know as soon as possible.  We will then enter teams accordingly e.g if we have two M35 and two M40 we will enter an M35 team.   More details www.yvaa.org

National Fell Relay – Sunday 18 October (from Steve Webb)

We have an entry!  I have paid for one open team and it seems to have been accepted.

British Fell and Hill relay Championship 2009

Event is on Sunday 18 October at Kirkland in the western Lake District.  We need a team of six as follows:

Leg 1 Solo 5.8m/1500'

Leg 2 Pairs 6.7m/2500'

Leg 3 Pairs Navigation 5.6m/1410'

Cancer Research 10k at Harewood – Sunday 18 October

We were involved in planning the route of the very first race 4 years ago and have supported it since. Abbey Runners and ourselves each send 12 marshals.  Please let me know if you’d like to help.  (You get a free burger or bacon sandwich and a hot drink), also free entry to Harewood Grounds.

West Yorkshire Cross Country – October to December

There will be 4 races

  • Sunday 11 October at Halifax

  • Weekend of 21 / 22 November – venue to be confirmed
  • Weekend of 5 / 6 December – venue to be confirmed

Entry fees will be £7 – this one-off fee enters you for all races in the series.

Two of the races will qualify for the Valley Striders Grand Prix

There is no limit to the number of runners that can run for each club

Please let me know if you want to be entered (and send £7 to Paul White as soon as you can)

Valley Striders Annual General Meeting – Tuesday 20 October

A review of the previous 12 months, then we look forward to the new year and appoint a new committee.  Food will be available.

Several people have asked about V S Membership fees for the year starting 1 September.  If you’d like to pay now, please send a cheque for £15, payable to Valley Striders, and post it to Paul White, 17 Whinmoor Court, Red Hall, Leeds, LS14 1NX.

Abbey/Valley Road Race team challenge – Sunday 29 November

The fourth race in this series will be the Thirsk 10 mile.  Striders won at Wakefield and Horsforth in 2008 but Abbey won at Pockligton in February this year.  So we’re still ahead 2-1 but should not be complacent.  Every runner from each club counts for points so put this race in your diaries now!

In Case of Emergency

We recommend all runners out training wear some form of Id.  There are various websites selling tags which link to databases of contact details.  One such website is CramAlert https://www.alertsrv.co.uk/ which was started because Steve Cram’s brother died on a training run but was not identified for 3 days.  But almost as good is to wear a waterproof tag with contact numbers of next-of-kin in indelible ink.

In case of emergency in our training sessions, we would also like phone numbers and/or addresses of next–of-kin.  For many of you we have home phone numbers and these would be used if necessary.  But many others only have mobile phones and so if we rang these numbers in case of emergency we’d be unlikely to get a reply.  Check if we have your emergency contact details by looking at http://valleystriders.org.uk/vsmemreg.htm

Another V S Update with race results to follow in the next day or so.  Also, Thursday morning, look on the website for Abbey Valley results.
