Subject: V S Update - Abbey Valley race and bbq final reminder, LCW update, race reports, and more

Tuesday 25 August – Valley Striders host Abbey Runners for team handicap race and barbecue

This will be a team race (see details below) using the 5¼ mile circuit of the Reservoir taking in Eccup Village, Emmerdale and the Water Treatment Works.  Click  http://valleystriders.org.uk/hcaptrl.jpg for a map (but don’t worry if you don’t know the way, there will be marshals)

Followed by a barbecue at Leo’s £6.50 per person, vegetarian option on request.

You will need to let me know by Sunday 23 August 10pm at the very latest whether you are going to run and whether you are coming to the barbecue.  (if you run, you need not come to the barbecue)  (and non-runners are welcome to come to the barbecue).  We will not be taking orders on Monday or Tuesday as the food will be ordered first thing Monday morning.

Click http://valleystriders.org.uk/vslists.htm to check that your booking has been received.

Abbey have over 30 runners coming, we have 26 so far.  As we are hosts, we ought to try to have more runners!

Leos will be open for changing but I expect most will come directly to Eccup Reservoir.  Meet near the lodge at the bottom of the steep hill from Alwoodley Lane.

On the night, please arrive before 7pm.  We will be announcing teams at 7pm and the first runners will start at about 7:10pm so if you arrive after 7pm you may not get to meet your fellow team members.

Here’s the basis of the competition.  Mark and I will make a list of all Abbeys and Valleys and sequence them based on estimated 10k time.  Then we divide the list into 5 equal sections. For example, if there are 75 runners in total, the fastest 15 would be the ‘A’ pool, the next 15 fastest the ‘B’ pool, and so on. We’ll them draw teams out of the hat, one runner from each pool making up a team. On the night, we’ll call out the names and each runner will wear a number (A1, B1, C1, D1 & E1 for Team 1, etc.). The E runners will start first, the D runners 5 mins later, and so on. This should ensure that the runners all finish at around the same time. Scoring will be based on each runners’ finishing position within their pool (15 points for the first A runner, 14 for the next, etc., and the same for the other 4 pools). Team score will be the total points scored by the 5 team members.  There will be a prize for the first team.  And maybe a spot prize or two.  NB all runners will be timed.  Sounds very complicated but it seemed to work last year.

NB if you do not pre-enter but decide on the night that you want to run, you will be able to do so, but not for a team.  As mentioned earlier, if you don’t book for the barbecue but come along to run, then sorry, no food.

P.S. we need a few marshals please!

Race reports

Priory 5 (from Joel Giddings)

Nick, Eric and I braved the rain last Wednesday for Ackworth Road Runners’ inaugural Priory 5 race.  The course was 5 miles (two 2.5 mile laps), mainly over grass, around the grounds of Nostell Priory and could be described as undulating – no steep or long uphill sections. It had been raining heavily for some time before the race and apparently the marshals were considering calling it off, but it turned out conditions under foot weren't too bad at all.  The race had a low-key, friendly atmosphere and the marshals were very supportive.  All finishers received a t-shirt and a bottle of water. The race had a relatively small field, but I hope this doesn't discourage the organisers from making this an annual event.  It could also help people looking for that elusive 5-miler for their Performance Award. I really enjoyed the race and would definitely do it again.

Results:

Taupo Half Marathon (from Gary Mann)

I did the Taupo Half marathon in New Zealand on August 2.  After being pumped with drugs to aid recovery from a stinking cold I managed to lumber through in 1 hour 45 coming 333 out of just under 2000. Performance enhancing they were not!! It was a very flat course running along the lake and back again. A fairly pretty course but nothing compared to the rest of the sights in NZ.  To soften the blow of running 10 mins slower than my PB I won a cracking spot prize (a Mizuno bag!!), which was given to me when I picked up the race number!

Loving NZ. See you soon!, Nobby

Striders of yesteryear

Email from Simon Higgins

Hi - Found your website more or less by accident - I was a member from 1984 - 1987 while working at Leeds Uni. I ran with Veronique Marot, Angie Pain and Brian Scobie from the Uni at lunchtimes, and VS on Sundays and sometimes at clubnights. Great times. I was very sorry to see that Hilary McEwan had died. I remember him - he was a real gent.

I was back in Leeds in March for the Leeds Uni Past vs. Present, and had a pleasant run around Meanwood Park.

Tony Sardo

It’s nearly 10 years since Tony was a club member but he re-introduced himself to me at the Round Hill Race.  He now lives the far side of Keighley and joined Keighley & Craven earlier this year.  He must have been putting in some decent training because, nearing the age of 50, he finished in the top 15 of the race.

Running Shoes for sale

Alison Bogie emailed

I am back from 6 month travels in Australia and New Zealand and enjoying catching up with everyone back home.

I wondered if you could do me a favour when you next send out an email to the Striders as my boyfriend and I had a bit of a nightmare getting running trainers in Australia, outside of the main cities there aren't that many specialist running suppliers and no one stocks Saucony. We ended up ordering online - unfortunately by the time they were sent out we had moved on and we found a good shop to purchase in. The trainers were forwarded on to us but when we finally got them they didn't fit!!

Anyway to cut a long story short we both have a pair of brand new trainers that are unused and we are trying to sell.

Mark's are Saucony Hurricane 10 (suitable for runners who pronate) and are UK size 9 & mine are Saucony Lady ProGrid Triumph 5 (cushioned shoe suitable for a neutral runner) UK size 6 (ladies). Both retail at over £80 and we are selling them at a bargain half price!

If you are interested, then email Alison at [email protected]

Look out for another V S Update at the weekend with a long list of forthcoming events
