Race 3 - Sunday 13 January at John Smeaton Sports Centre, near Crossgates

From Leeds, take A64, then at roundabout, where A64 turns left and becomes the Ring Road, instead go STRAIGHT ON (Barwick Road), for about a mile, John Smeaton is on your right just after the housing estate finishes.

From Moortown, Roundhay etc, take Leeds Outer Ring Road past Seacroft, then where Ring Road continues and A64 is to right, turn LEFT (Barwick Road), continue for a mile, as above.

Register 10:00 to 10:30 (10:45 at latest), we need as many as possible so that we maintain our good men’s and vets positions and try to save our ladies from relegation.

The route is along the edges of fields and has some good paths including part of the Leeds Country Way.  Should be fairly flat.

NB in the Ackworth race, a lady finishing last would have raised our position by one place, so please come even if you are new to cross country.

Chevin Chase Results

Good to see two new Striders names, Gwil and Kevin, at the front of 30 Striders amongst 814 finishers.

Congratulations to Caz for 2nd place, only 2 hours after finishing a 13-hour night shift, she was probably in a hurry to get round and then go home to bed.  But she did stay for the prizegiving unlike the first lady who didn’t stop to collect her cup (I did suggest that Caz should have it instead).

Handicap Results

Louise Cleghorn has made good use of a year’s altitude training (she’s been living in Switzerland), her actual run time was over 9 minutes faster than last year.  Tom Ridgway could see her but couldn’t catch her.

Ian Sanderson repeated last year’s performance by scoring 100 grand prix points, last year he was beaten by two second-claimers but this year he was fastest overall.  Dan Harman was only 3 seconds behind on the watch.

Your correspondent ran an identical time to last year to the second.

Fancy dress prize went to Carole Schofield who came as a tree but ran a lot faster (could have been something to do with the number of dogs being walked round the Res).  Actually she was the only one in fancy dress but would have won even if the rest of us had made some attempt.

32 runners was 5 up on last year and a record in 15 years of Xmas 5-milers.

Cakes and shortbread, courtesy Carole, and sweeties, courtesy Peter & Joyce, were eaten back at Leos.  Thank you!

Thanks again to Mike & Eileen Crosfill and Peter & Joyce Lambert for (in that order) timekeeping, recording, marshalling and number handing out.

Grand Prix 2008

There are a few changes to the set of races from 2007.

Out – Norland Moor, Guy Fawkes, Burley Bridge

In – Snake Lane, Yorkshireman marathon, Yorkshireman half

We’ll publish a full list in the next few days.

Stop Press – we have just heard (our moles are Tom and Zoe) that the Leeds Half will not be held in 2008, so we are looking for a replacement for that too.

Abbey Valley Challenge

This will take place at the Wakefield 10k on Sunday 30 March.

We are devising a scoring system so that all runners will count, so please keep this date available and do NOT enter the South Leeds 5 (or any other race) on the same day

We think we will make the Wakefield 10k a Grand Prix event, so not only will you be representing your Club, you’ll also be gaining Grand Prix points!

I haven’t seen entry forms yet, will let you know.

Performance Awards

At the time of the Christmas Do, 20 Striders had achieved a performance award certificate (congratulations), possibly one or two more will have achieved theirs when Paul has input the final results of the year.

We should have these onto the website after the weekend.

If you didn’t get a certificate in 2007, all your performances will be carried forward into 2008 – you have 2 years to achieve the certificate.

If you did get a certificate in 2007, your performances at that grade and lower are wiped out and you start again – but if in 2007 you achieved some performances at a higher grade than your certificate, these too are carried forward into 2008.

So get entering races!

PS thank you to Alan Hutchinson for the idea and for framing and to Paul Hunter for the data collection and spreadsheet maintenance.

London Marathon Places

Louise Cleghorn, David Cusack and Eric Cusack have won the Striders club places for 2008.

Dan Murray has a guaranteed entry for 2009 (provided he reminds us to send off the paperwork next October).

Reserves are (in order) Patrick Barrett, Greg Skerrett, Jonathan Cocker, Dan Harman, Anna Costello.

For those who didn’t get in, the Blackpool Marathon is two weeks later (April 27) and this has the advantage that you can go the day of the race and park less than 600 yards from the start!

Brass Monkey Entry

I have a Brass Monkey race number available to a male aged between 40 and 60 and expecting to run between 1:30 and 1:50.  (The reason I’m specific is that they seed the entries and so anything outside this time range might be queried).

Photos on the Website

Thanks to Carmel Barker and Tony Haygarth who, between them, took 40 pictures at the Abbey Dash. These are now on the website http://valleystriders.org.uk/vsalbum/strider2.htm

I’ve also updated the alphabetical list of photos with 34 new Striders  http://valleystriders.org.uk/vsalbum/ph2_alph.htm

If you have photos of yourself in action, please email to me, ideal size is between 50 and 150 kb.

Christmas Quiz

It’s not that I’ve had no all-correct answers, it’s that I’ve had no answers whatsoever as yet, so I’ll keep the competition open for one week more, and you’ll get the answers in the next V S Update.  NB one of the quiz answers can be found in this email!

Congratulations to Louise Cleghorn …

… who married Carl on December 28, won the Xmas Handicap on December 30 and went on a week’s honeymoon on December 31.

Advert (from Paul Hunter)

I am looking to sell one of my pairs of fell shoes as for some reason they give me a blister.

They are Inov-8 Mudroc 290’s size UK9.

They retail for £54ish at Up & Running and as they have hardly been used I would like £25.

Better a club member bags a bargain than somebody on Ebay.

Happy New Year

I wish you all a successful running year.
