Annual General Meeting

The minutes should be available soon, but a few bullet points in the meantime

Membership subscriptions are due now – basic membership is £9 plus £3 to be registered with UK Athletics, a total of £12.  Second claim members pay £9.  Non-running members pay £3; they are classed as volunteers by UK Athletics and there is no charge for them to be registered, so just £3 in total.  Junior members pay £3 plus £3 to be registered with UK Athletics, a total of £6.  Please make a cheque payable to “Valley Striders” and send to Paul White, 17 Whinmoor Crescent, Red Hall, Leeds LS14 1NX

Assistant fell championship co-ordinator – John Hallas

Assistant race director for Meanwood and Harewood Races – Dan Murray

There is a vacancy for “Club archivist” – please contact me for details if you’d like to do this

Training sessions

Tuesday – we are considering setting up one Tuesday in four as a track session at Carnegie (Beckett Park) – provisionally with a trial session on October 30 – at least 10 members at the AGM were interested.  Watch out for more details later this week but in the meantime let me know if you are interested for October 30.

Thursday – we’ll try to set up a communication method to see who’s running and maybe have two groups

Sunday – ditto – NB see information below from Tim Towler

Pie and peas nights – Tony will give us a quote for apple pie (cream or ice-cream!) for the next pie and peas on 6 November.

Xmas meal will be Friday 14 December - £9 to Steve O’Callaghan, please book [email protected]

Some subjects needed more detailed discussion and we’ll continue on Tuesday nights

- number of races to organise  (Tuesday 6 November)

- Grand Prix events for 2008  (Tuesday 20 November)

- club constitution (to be arranged)

Everyone welcome to come along and voice your opinions!

Harewood Trail

Current estimate of money raised is £2,500, but there are still a few minor bills to come in, and possibly some sponsorship money.  This brings the amount raised for Lineham Farm from this race to £10,000 in 3 years, so please congratulate yourselves if you’ve been involved in the race in any way over these 3 years.

Every marshal is entitled to a bottle of “Harewood Trail Ale” beer so if you haven’t had yours, please come to the club to collect it soon.  Any bottles not collected will be sold and the proceeds added to the sum for Lineham Farm.

Next year the equivalent date (5 October) is the same day as the Great North Run.  Other races seem to try to avoid clashing with GNR, but my theory is that we have a different clientele; there can’t be many runners who want to run a scenic undulating 10 miles off-road that are also interested in 13 miles of mainly flat and mainly straight dual carriageway.  Let me know your views.

More Cross Country

The first Peco / Sport Direct league will be Sunday 11 November at Woodkirk (that’s about 2 miles south of the Tingley junction on the M62).  Teams are 5 women, 8 men, 3 women vets, 6 men vets, but the more the merrier.  This is a friendly event and an opportunity for those who’ve not run cross country before to get their feet (and possibly other parts of their body) muddy without embarrassment.

Grand Prix

I’ll update the website when I’ve got hold of the Withins Skyline results.

The remaining Grand Prix races are

Sunday November 4 – Guy Fawkes 10 – from Ripley Castle between Harrogate and Ripon – undulating!

Saturday November 10 – Burley Bridge Hike – approx 20 miles on and around Ilkley Moor - undulating

Saturday November 17 – West Yorks Cross Country 3 at York – not likely to be too many undulations there.  If you want to enter, please let me know by November 4.

Sunday November 25 – Abbey Dash 10k – when I last looked they were still taking entries – enter online at www.helptheaged.org.uk – they don’t charge any extra

So there’s still plenty of opportunity to score points. And I know that many of you have already run 4 or more races so it’s still possible for you to get 8 races in and qualify for a Valley Striders 2007 Grand Prix T-Shirt (19 of you have already run 8 races and so have already qualified)

Race Reports/Results

Mendip Muddle

Caz Farrow emailed  “I think we were the only VS's running down in Somerset this weekend!  Steve & I both did the Mendip Muddle, a 20km off-road race in, not surprisingly, the Mendips!  I was 27th & 1st woman, Steve 58th.  Great route should anyone be down that way next year!”

Leicester City Marathon

At the Leicester City marathon on October 14, Liz Wood ran a PB of 3:29:39 (chip time). “The Leicester course was good - not quite as flat as the organisers had led us to believe, but a nice loop round the countryside, and starting and finishing in the city centre”.

Richmond Castle 10k (the one in Yorkshire, not the one on-Thames)

 50 Tim Towler     42:02

From our Spanish correspondent in Mallorca

Exciting news from Palma with all three Striders on tour doing a PB!

Erica did a PB of 1 second by completing the half marathon in 1:33:09; Jonathan did the half in 1:33:01 and Patrick did a stupendous marathon PB of 3:19:29. E and J did not run together but finished in a Valley Striders 1-2 with E edging out J but the chip time later revealed that J had beaten E by 8 seconds! Erica's sister-in-law also did a PB by finishing the half in 1:55:00.

We are all going out tonight with Patrick and Jonathan intending to eat drink and make merry until tomorrow morning. Erica thinks she will be in bed with a good book and a cup of cocoa by 11.

Columbus Ohio Marathon

    Jonjo Leggatt    3:43:53  (PB – 1st marathon)

    Chris Leggatt    3:46:47

From the split times on the race website, it appears they ran together for at least the first 20 miles

Thanks to 14 of you who sponsored Chris and Jonjo, I’ll look after your money when I see you!

Triplets

Congratulations to the Valley Striders triplets – Eric Cusack, Tony Haygarth and Pat Umpleby – who all celebrate their 60th birthdays on Tuesday 23 October.  Pat has been taken on a cruise by John, but maybe Eric or Tony will pass by Leo’s on Tuesday so that we can wish them well.

Joyce the Voice

Peter reports that Joyce is following her recovery / recuperation programme and last week was starting with 5 minutes of walking each day, increasing by 5 minutes each day.

Sunday Training – information from Tim Towler

The meeting point for the Valley Striders long run has always been Smithy Mills at the bottom of Parkside Road, where it meets the Ring Rd. There is plenty of parking by the Equestrian Centre.

A long run still takes place, though somewhat spasmodically, depending on what races are coming up, and indeed what races are taking place on the Sunday.

We meet at 9am.  We run between an hour and a half and two hours, getting off road as much as we can.

Routes tend to take in Eccup Reservoir, the edge of the Harewood Estate, Lineham Farm, Golden Acre Park etc. During the Spring when the training was geared towards London, we often came back along Otley Road from Bramhope so there were options to cut off through Adel or down the Ring Road, or alternatively head on down towards Headingley, to extend the run, working our way back via Stonegate Road or Meanwood Park.

Another route took us out to Horsforth where we would join the canal and run back into town, heading back to Smithy Mills along the Meanwood Valley Trail.

Some of those who run are Roy Flesher, Alan Hutchinson, Drew Taylor, Gary Shipley, Gary Sutherland, Alison Bogie, Jonny Harrison and Vicky Whitehead. This will give you an idea of the speed (yes, it’s quicker when Vicky is there!). As you will appreciate there are some regular marathoners amongst these names so the training can get reasonably serious as a marathon approaches.

To avoid a situation of turning up at 9 am on a Sunday and finding nobody there I usually email the "regulars" on a Thursday, so that everyone has an idea as to whether the "Sunday Run" is on or not.
