Handicap 10k

After the record 50 runners in the summer handicap, the record was broken again, there were 54 finishers on Tuesday evening.

Xanthe proved the benefit of Tuesday training by coming through to win by 25 seconds.  Second and third were two new members to whom I gave a rather generous handicap.  Another fast improver was Richard in 4th place, and Natalie showed how well her marathon training is going (she runs Chicago in 4 weeks) to finish 5th.

Steve was fastest on the night with 36:07, gaining 100 G P points, well ahead of Dave Middlemas (99) and Jon Uttley (98).  Elika was fastest lady and scored 95.

Afterwards, 47 pies and peas were eaten, only 3 short of the all-time record consumption.

Thanks to Mike, Eileen, Pat, Joyce, John, Peter and Chris for their help (and particular thanks to Eileen for bringing the torch)

Birthdays

Striders - 25th birthday

There are now 49 photos on the website – thanks to Mike and Eileen Crosfill, Chris Leggatt and Stuart StJohn, John and Pat Umpleby.

If you’d like a better quality copy of any of these, I can email them.

Chris Leggatt and his son Jonjo are running the Columbus Ohio marathon on Sunday 21 October and are seeking sponsorship which will be donated to Martin House Childrens Hospice at Boston Spa.  If you’d like to sponsor them, I have a form and by signing it an extra 28p in the £ can be raised.

Tracey Morris – 40th birthday

From the “Sun Online”

On Sunday, it's double party time for Tracey Morris and her twin brother, who celebrate the big Four-O.

We received this message from Wendy Jones: "Can you wish my husband and his twin sister marathon runner Tracey Morris a happy 40th birthday on Sunday September 9.

"Love and best wishes from Wendy, Blake, Caitlin, Grace, Clark and Keane."

Hope you both have a great day!

Find out which famous people share Tracey’s birthday in the “Sun Online”  http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,11070-2007410971,00.html

Also sharing Tracey’s birthday, but 34 years younger, is Eddie, son of Mark Hunter and Erica Hiorns.

Paul White – 60th Birthday

Thanks to everybody for your cards and good wishes.

I started running about 25 years ago, initially 3 or 4 miles and a few fun runs including some with Natalie.  As the girls got older and went to University I started running 6 or 7 miles and did my first serious race, the Humber Bridge 10K on 5th June 1994, in a time of 45:54.

A year or so later I was thinking about joining a running club and was speaking to Paul Furness at a do at work when he mentioned Valley Striders.  So I came along to my first session on 31st October 1995.  I was a bit apprehensive not knowing quite what to expect and whether they’d all be elite runners!  The first person I saw in the changing room was Peter Lambert, I’d known Peter and Joyce for a few years from Circuit Training.  I knew Peter was a runner but didn’t know he was a member of the Club.  I’d never run in the dark or in winter before so I had my shell suit on and a couple of jumpers!  The first session was the old fartlek route which was pretty hard going but Max kept an eye on me at the back.

Gradually I improved, upped my mileage and have done hundreds of races since including 40 Half Marathons and the London Marathon this year.

The great thing about the Club is the friendship and the fact that we all have a common interest and can talk about races, training and injuries!  Tuesday nights are a highlight for me and it was an honour to become the Treasurer last year and be able to put something back into the Club.

Reaching 60 has lots of benefits including:

·         free bus travel

·         free prescriptions

·         the winter fuel allowance

·         10% discount at B & Q

·         and lots of other concessions

·         but the best thing of all is moving into a new Vets Category and I ran my first race as a M60 on Sunday in the Wetherby 10K.

Once again thanks very much.
